Once upon a time, I discovered a great gym that provided really good, small group fitness classes. They were very effective for me and made a big impact on my health and fitness, rolling back years of middle age neglect. But after a job change and a move, I spent several years looking for a gym with a similar workout. Finally, earlier this year, my daughter discovered Soundview. Now after six months of attending the small classes several times a week, I’ve rediscovered my inner athlete! I’m not trying to change my appearance or compete at a high level; I want overall fitness for long term quality of life. The Soundview workouts mix cardio, muscular and skeletal strength, all sorts of flexibility, and get my body moving in ways and using muscles I just don’t as a runner and cyclist. I brag to my friends that I have a personal coach, trainer, and physical therapist because I get so much attention working specific technique and fixing lifelong issues with form. Every class has a mix of novice and casual with experienced athletes; there’s no comparison of performance, but the format and the workout plan gets me to push well beyond what I would do on my own. I’ve enjoyed all three of my coaches (Lindsay, Megan, and Ken) and I’m impressed by their depth of knowledge in biomechanics and overall health and fitness. I leave with my body feeling wonderfully tired for the rest of the day and energized throughout the week. Overall, I just feel so much more athletic.
