In exchange for giving up some modern amenities and a bit of city / train noise, the Eklund gives you great character from the 1800s with a friendly staff. The hotel has a lot of character and history with nice amenities, and clean and comfortable - Complimentary breakfast every morning (homemade coffee cake, biscuits, burritos, and quiche, plus more). The rooms were clean, nicely decorated to fit the historical nature of the hotel, and the room/bed was comfortable. They have a bar and restaurant attached which is open from Thurs-Sat with entertainment and across the street from the Historical Luna theater. Mind you this is a very, very small town with not too much to do as you would find in a city - not necessarily a vacation hotspot. But the town and the staff were amazing. Even though we never made it to our original destination, we were able to relax, slow down and have a great unexpected vacation here. I cannot emphasize enough how the owners made an untenable situation so much better - even enjoyable. If you have to stop in Clayton, don’t stay anywhere else! We were so fortunate to find this place, and will stop here every time we head to Colorado. In all aspects, The Eklund is a GEM! Less

The front desk check-in was friendly and receptive. Now the not so good - First, be known, there is a train that runs through town 1 block from the hotel. Cane through at 10pm, 2am, and 6am (give it take a few minutes), so if you’re expecting a sound sleep through the night, that’s a challenge. Second, the saloon/restaurant. Beautiful setup to sit and look at. Bar only has one brand of local liquor if you’re looking for a cocktail (New Mexico brand I believe is what they said). Menu is limited, and a little over-priced. We had the elk rolls as an appetizer which were outstanding. Wife had the pork chops which were fairly flavorful, but tough, and overpriced. I had the steak. Pretty bland, was reminiscent of a Bonanza or Golden Corral steak, and way overpriced. No salad or roll was served with either entree. Seating was limited, so it felt like our server was rushing us through the meal so they could seat another party, and keep the money train flowing. So, I’d stay at the hotel, if you can sleep through the train, and I’d eat elsewhere if given the choice, especially if you’re looking for a nice drink to kick back and relax with to complete your evening. The hotel has an interesting history with gunfights, bullet holes, wild west criminals, etc. It was updated, but kept lots of the original architecture and gorgeous bar that was won in a poker game. The owner has a green thumb with plenty of beautiful potted plants around. The dining room has some of the original headboards as seat backs in the booths. There were lots of pretty stained glass, chandeliers, opulent ceiling medallions, and ornate staircases. Vonita provided just the best service, history lessons, cooking, happiness, and kindness. She turned on the lights in the bar so we could take pictures. She told us about the history of the hotel, showed us the various bullet holes, told us about the history of the area, and gave us directions to several tourist attractions. It was so refreshing to see a young person who's proud of where they live and work, and who is so enthusiastic and kind. Vonita got us ice for our cooler, both when we checked in and then when we checked out. Vonita, also, served the generous breakfast with homemade quiche, breakfast burrito, pastries, and fruit. We didn't try the pastries, but they looked wonderful. The room was decorated tastefully in Southwest style. The rooms were clean and satisfactory. We loved the English Pear hand soap. This historic hotel was a refreshing change from the chain hotels in most cities. Less

Wonderful hotel. It is a historic hotel, so don't expect perfection. The floors creek, the walls are thin, and, being located adjacent to a highway intersection and train tracks, you are not well insulated from their sounds. BUT, for me, they add to the experience. Our room (207) was full of modern amenities, and everything worked as it was supposed to. However, there is no fridge, no coffee maker, no microwave, and the TV was tiny. There is a balcony shared by the 4 front, 2nd level rooms, which was great except that the curtains didn't fully block anyone from seeing inside or room. I was instructed by the manager not to smoke "anything" on the balcony. No doubt in part because there is a cannabis dispensary 2 doors down. No problem, they have a lovely outdoor smoking area. There is a restaurant and a historic saloon on premises, but are only open on Friday and Saturday. They serve an enhanced continental breakfast to hotel guests every day, but the only low-carb thing available is a crustless quiche that is made to order. The breakfast room attendant is very knowledgeable about the history, professional, however, she could use some people skills. There is no coffee maker in the rooms, so we toddled down to the breakfast room with our cups where we were jumped on and scolded for bringing or own cups, and then treated like riff-raff. The attendant demanding to know our room number. The breakfast was unappealing, so we just left and got our breakfast on the road. Overall, we would definitely stay here again. Less

Cool evening breeze on the balcony. Also a beautiful, shaded patio and seating with greenery adjacent to the main driveway entrance. Good service in the hand-carved woodwork old-school "saloon" for dinner. Old West artifacts abound. Check out the ornate lobby. Good sleep overnight to be ready for an all-day drive. The Eklund's location downtown a half-block off the main highway is ideal. Plenty of parking, we could see our car from our room. The owner Keith and his wife (did not get her name) cook up and serve the free breakfast. Had nice brief chat with Keith in the ornate breakfast room. Several items to choose from. We tried their crustless quiche with Hatch Chiles - excellent! They also provide fresh fruit, cereals, hot oatmeal, yogurt, breakfast tacos, etc. This locally-owned business (survived the cruel covid shut-downs) is not an ordinary, bland corporate chain! A nice finish to our trip to the cool mountains. Less

My fiancee and I stayed next to it in 308 and, aside from some creaky floors, I can say that it was a unique and enjoyable experience that was free of anything supernatural. The decor simply cannot be beat, however. After all, how often are you able to stay in an old west saloon hotel, replete with saloon doors, the remnants of old gas lamps, and even leftover bullet holes?! Proprietor Keith was lovely to work with and as creepy as some of the decor can seem, he and his staff make it every bit a welcoming environment for a great stay! Less

The public spaces are nicely restored, but the rooms have almost no historical character -- just not very functional and ugly furniture containing the hotel's "E" monogram. There's a reading chair but no nearby lamp. There are no screens in the windows. The rooms are no better than a motel room, worse in some ways. The hotel provides a free breakfast for guests, but it was also disappointing. Everything but the coffee and oatmeal was refrigerator cold. If you wanted anything warm you had to put it in the microwave. They offer breakfast burritos, but all contain meat. Not everyone wants meat. Egg and potato burritos aren't unusual. The hotel's restaurant menu suggests it knows that it is likely to attract some vegetarians, but apparently that hasn't occurred to them for breakfast. Last, it's wrong to add a $4.20 credit card fee to a bill without informing the customer. Moreover, no place charging $105 and up for a room should charge a credit card fee. It's not like most of us walk around with that much cash. Less

The history and ambiance. Jo Beth does a fabulous job entertaining us with the stories of the grand hotel and restaurant.
1800s cowboy hotel very rustic. The desk clerk was more tour guide than clerk. Very very interesting

My goodness I felt like I was at my childhood home and grandma's all in one place, could the walls need a little TLC yes but why would anyone do that, it's the character of this grand ole hotel that needs to continue to shine and those walls tell stories, lots and lots of stories, the cracks in the walls and the creaking floors oh yes they too are perfection, the bed felt like my grandma's bed all nice and cozy and comfy. Our room was a balcony and of course Don enjoyed sitting out there even though it was cold. The train, oh my goodness, took me to memories of being a kid and living next to the tracks, what fun it was to hear that whistle blow!!! I love trains!!! Jo Beth is the sweetest lady and makes you feel like family, she illustrated a child's book that I purchased in the lobby and she designed it to be dyslexic friendly. She's the absolute sweetest lady, I'm thankful to have met her and husband, he used to work at the True Value Hardware store here, that's how they met, she would go get stuff and it went from there ❤ Lots of history in this one building, no ghost experience for us whew Less

Since I drive through this little town a lot I went to a great restaurant on the main street that stays open until 10pm. We ate and got some gas for the rest of our road trip. We went back to the hotel and was locked out and it was only 10pm. My cell phone for some reason wasn't working so I couldn't call the number they had on the door to call after hours. Luckily I have a loud whistle and someone on the or 3rd floor out on the porch heard me and came down to let us in. The room was good and clean the pillows were hard but luckily I brought my own. I really wanted to fall in love with this hotel. It looks nice from the outside, the inside has a nice homey feel other than their furniture being stained and dusty, the people that ran it seemed nice enough but once I got to the room it went downhill from there. The room was one of their big ones and still was ridiculously tiny. There is no way this is a 3 star hotel. The rooms are dark and dingy complete with a filthy, stinky refrigerator and a small tube T.V. The bathrooms still had soap on the tiles, not scum but actual soap from the previous occupant. The shampoo, conditioner, and soap is all mixed together in one bin. The towels they left for us were ripped, crusty, and had orange, yellow stains on them. The blankets on the bed had crusted white fluid on them. I told my husband we must leave. My husband felt embarrassed by the situation and told the owners that we were leaving because we found a hotel room somewhere else that had two queen beds instead of one. He was then informed that we would have to pay the full price of the room even though we only occupied it for 30-60 minutes max unless they could get someone to clean the room. I was not having any of that B.S I went to the front desk to ask to see the sheet I signed to make sure there wasn't some small print nonsense about being able to charge me full price for a disgusting room and deciding to leave..there wasn't btw. The employee promptly ushered me out of the front desk area being concerned that there were other possible tenants present and being embarrassed that I was speaking up about the filth. The woman proceeded to get very worked up with me when I told her I refuse to pay for a room we will not be staying in, she continuously tried to take the paper I signed out of my hands, told me what a disrespectful woman I was because I wasn't bowing down to her BS charges. I will absolutely be pressing fraudulent charges against her if my card is charged. I will update as time goes. Not only did I have to go up to the room with her and prove the filth in the room but this interaction happened in front of my 2 children. This hotel is far from 3 stars. I would seriously consider pushing through to the next city if you can unless you absolutely cant. Just an update... my credit card was charged without my knowledge. Less

3 stars for good service from the hostess/service. The food was more like 1 or 2 stars. The chicken fried chicken tasted like dishwater and fish.
Wonderful old timey place. We ate in the saloon because the restaurant was closed for some reason. I got the green chili cheese burger and thought it was pretty darn good. I highly recommend a stay here whether it’s voluntary or they close all the roads around you. You won’t regret it! Less

Great family fun.
Train track crossing 100 feet away, its beyond loud if your room window faces them. This is a hotel from the 1800's so be prepared small rooms.
I had a chef's salad that was promptly served. It was almost closing time so I didn't dig too deeply into the menu.

Although the atmosphere is unique, the owners are lovely, and the food is okay, the service was the worst I have ever experienced in my life. The waitress was rude, refused some service, paid little to no attention to us, had no patience, and assumed her own 20% tip which is apparently nonnegatiable in New Mexico. To top it off, there was only one other group of two people in the whole restaurant to serve. We had to do most everything ourselves. It is no doubt that this place is going down hill, and fast. Unless service changes, I will not be going there again. Less

We confirmed with them that our wedding party could come and take pictures on the balcony and saloon. They were fine with that as long as we gave them one for advertising purposes... Of course no problem! Well when it finally came down to it they threw a fit and acted horribly with us! Like my husband and I and our family probably spent close to $2000 over two days for hotel, food and drinks! We supposedly were in the way.. It was downhill from there. The food was only average so that did not save the experience. At the end of our meal as we waited for our checks (that would each have a 20% gratuity added for our large party with separate checks) we watched the "only" waitress take 3 orders and bring drinks. She then insisted she was "working on separating our checks" yet she was never at a machine to do so and had written them on separate tickets when she took our order. All in all it was a very poor experience. If I could give a ZERO I would. Less

Very disappointing experience with this hotel today. My dogs and I have stayed at this hotel every summer for the last four years on our way to Red River. One of my dogs is getting older and the vet recommended spending the night halfway to the destination to allow him to acclimate to the altitude; because they advertise that they are pet friendly, and being attracted to the charm of the place, I chose the Eklund and it has always worked out perfectly, that is, until today. On all my stays there, I have taken 3 to 4 small (10 - 20 pound) dogs who wear diapers when loose in the room, and are crated when I am out of the room. I have always told the hotel up front that I am bringing dogs and how many, and they never had a problem with it until today. When I called, the clerk seemed somewhat unsure of herself and could not locate my name in the system. We went through the whole booking/reservation process, during which, she had to repeatedly ask how to spell my last name, When she asked if two adults would be staying, I told her one adult and that I would be bringing my dogs. She asked how many, and I told her probably four small dogs. She stated that the limit is two. I told her I had stayed there the last four summers with more than two dogs, had informed the hotel up front of the number I would be bringing each trip, and they had had no problem with it in the past. I asked if this was a new rule; she said that no, it wasn't a new rule. She put me on hold for a minute, and came back with a hard line that the limit is two. She said she had asked the owner and they said, "No." I asked if it was new ownership since last year; she said that it was not. I explained that I am a responsible pet owner, that my dogs wear diapers when loose in the room and are crated when I am not there, but she wouldn't budge. This is a very disappointing start to our vacation this year. I have been a good customer to this establishment and have treated their property with respect. It seems to me they would do all they can to retain business rather than send it away. As it happens, the Quality Inn in Clayton is more than happy to accomodate me and my four fur babies, and, at a better price. They will be getting my business from here on out. Less

And there are many pluses like plenty of parking, outdoor patio, balcony, friendly staff, restaurant in the old saloon and free breakfast. The rooms were clean, bed was comfortable and plenty of hot water. The reality of this hotel is a bit different. It was built in 1892, so the floors creak...a lot, the doors stick a bit and the walls are THIN, so don't have a private conversation over a whisper. The free internet was painfully slow. The hotel faces the main street which is also Hwy 412 and is just half a block away from the RR crossing. Trains run about every 2-3 hours and they DO blow their whistle as they go through town. The food in the saloon was excellent. We really enjoyed the Ek rolls! Our room (311), was on the side farthest from the train tracks, but they were plenty loud enough. Personally, though, I love listening to trains at night, so I suggest that if you stay and would be bothered by the trains passing through 2 or 3 times at night, just pretend they're the old steam engine trains of the same era as the hotel and you'll be further immersed in the spirit of the old west when you stay at the Eklund. The room amenities were sufficient, although the bed is considerably past due for replacement in that room. Otherwise, it was an altogether delightful stay in a preserved and restored 19th century frontier hotel. Less

With my government discount, I got a balcony room for less than what the Days Inn down the street was charging for a regular room. The check in clerk was especially nice and helpful. The room was spacious and clean, as was the bathroom. There is an elevator, so you don't have to lug your bags up the stairs. The room furnishings matched the historic theme. I ordered basil penne and chips with salsa from their restaurant. The food was pretty good, ESPECIALLY the tortilla chips. I think they make their own chips. The restaurant also has a decent selection of vegetarian options- which I was not expecting. The Continental breakfast had stuff like quiche, muffins, jams, boiled eggs, pastries, yogurt, and the coffee was excellent. I loved the breakfast dining room. It should be noted that this place is near train tracks and I was woken up by trains a few times, even though I had brought a fan for white noise. I am a VERY light sleeper, though. The train noise may not be much of an issue if you get a room in the back of the hotel. It was @5:30 when we went and I ordered the soup of the day, was told several minutes later that they had "run out" of soup already, didn't have any filets ( steaks) on hand so ordered a ribeye which was fair and baked potato was cold. My husband had the chicken-fried steak and cream gravy was very greasy. When paying for the meal, she still was charging me the soup that they were out of, she did rectify that. Very disappointed and hesitate to eat here next time we drive through Clayton. Less

Food just okay, but it is a tradition to eat here when going through Clayton. Quaint old hotel.
Service issues but made up by quality food.
Was good food, nice atmosphere and friendly
It was terrible! Food was old and not cooked all the way and the service was awful! Will not go back, ever!
Great experience. We broke down and they went above and beyond to make us comfortable. Great food, too! We will definitely be back.
Wonderful New Mexican food, live music and a rich history. Ask about the bullet holes.
Nice place. Very friendly staff. Food is good. Not great. But I am not dissapointed.

We sent it back to the kitchen and while we were offered a sepearate dish we asked it be taken off of the check instead of a replacement. Our server took a negative attitude and stated that she could box it to go but could not take it off the ticket. As a server I understand she doesn't have the power to comp meals so we asked for the manager instead. The server came back and stated that "The manager is too busy to deal with the situation". She did end up comping the meal but the attitude taken was disappointing- for a restaurant that relies heavily on repeat customers. Less

The food however was excellent. However, we would not recommend it! We also stayed at the hotel as well. This place has the potential to be an excellent destination but due to the lack of hospitality from the people running it I would highly suggest not wasting a night where you will be angered instead of having an enjoyable evening. Also be advised that they lock the place down at night to the point of having to call and wait outside for some one to begrudgingly unlock the door. Most inconvenient and awkward for everyone involved! Absolutely beautiful in its history but not worth the stay. Less

You might have thought we were criminals or meth tweakers from the way we were treated when we arrived... Not only that, but the place smelled sour, old and dirty. We walked to the hostess stand and were told the wait would be 30 minutes or more - but there was only 1 table seated in the whole place! We were told to wait in the lobby - so we sat at the only places available in the lobby - only to be asked to move by the lady behind the the desk - so she could come out and sit where we were sitting... Dirty, smelly, old place... rude and arrogant staff... Who knows or cares if the food was good or not... we just walked out... The better (the phrase 'lesser of two evils' comes to mind) of the two was completely booked for a wedding. This was also the motel that advertised swimming at the municipal pool next door. So we continued on towards Clayton, NM where we were given the last room at the Hotel Eklund. Built in 1892 it has been in more or less continuous service since then. Renovations in 2004 and 2011 preserved the charm and old fashioned look and atmosphere. Our room was very clean and thee queen size bed was comfy. We had a nice dinner at the hotel restaurant. But if you plan to dine there make a reservation as soon as you can. Clayton, NM may not be a destination but because of the hotel Eklund it's certainly worth a stopover. Less

Nothing fancy here. Small room, needs updating. Had a tube TV and different colored paint touch ups on the walls. No ceiling fan.

It's a beautifully restored historic hotel with lots of stories around it. It's owned by 2 (semi) retired architects, one of which grew up in this little town. She's the one you'll find cooking in the kitchen most nights ! It's a good basic menu with usually a special or two, and a full bar with some good craft beers. And many nights we've gotten to listen to some good live music in the bar. Could be a unique experience, if managed better. Received notification around 5:30 informing us that our reservation couldn't be honored due to the cleaning lady not feeling capable. The approach was manipulative with a less than honest inquiry, since it was obviously well established that we specifically requested a two queen bed room with a balcony and NOT A SINGLE KING WITH A ROLL-AWAY, prior to "unprofessionally" explaining personal issues with staff that had no bearing whatsoever with honoring our reservation. Perhaps a thoughtful back-up cleaning plan needs to be implemented! WORST OF ALL was that the original fee was expected with absolutely not even a hint of, a courteous offer of, a discount with respect to the establishment's inadequacy. Receiving such a tacky notification at close to 6:00 PM is a significant deal changer/breaker for vacationing travelers! OBVIOUSLY NOT RECOMMENDABLE. Serious lack of courtesy and attention to basic lodging ethics. A antique hotel with plenty of potential under an not so antique management system, that understands how to compete in the modern world where customers are much more in charge of outcomes and quality. Someone should have responsibly taken on the room preparation job to ensure the reservation was honored, instead of too comfortably, resting that responsibility upon just one person. We recommend the local Days Inn as a clean affordable option, when staying in Clayton. Less

What a great surprise to stumble onto this hotel at 7:30 at night, literally starving and nowhere else to eat! We entered the hotel and immediately seated in the historic "Saloon" for dinner. They had a full menu and I was tempted to ordetr a steak, but when I saw mexican food, (we were in New Mexico) I was compelled to order enchilada and stuffed poblano pepper. It was accompanied by a wonderful guacomole/potato (yes, potato) and onion concoction that was simply devine. The Guacamole side dish really set off the heat of the other food. I highly recommend this restaurant - Clayton should be proud. Standing bar only which is a great way to stretch those legs from a long day on your ponies. We were greeted by Jody, he's the jack of trait, bark keep, custodian and best, historian of Hotel Eklund. We have stayed here many time and each time we learn something new about this quaint Clayton hotel. He showed us all the bullet holes in the original tin ceiling just above bar. Story goes, overly happy gun slinger were so excited a new mayor was elected they couldn't contain themselves, they let a little bullet out. A couple large holes possibly from a 45(these holes were the only ones we knew of, our tour guide Jody showed us a lot of bullet holes from possibly a 22. Tin ceiling tiles have some stories to tell. Pictures cover the walls that enables you to be transported back in time.. I could hear the men hooting and a hollering from years gone by. Not for the faint of heart or stomach, pictures of a botched hanging of a train robber named Black Jack Ketchum. All the township young and old came to watch him hang. What they got was a beheading. He dropped from the gallow for his hanging but instead his head popped off. They never had another hanging on south side of the present doomed courthouse. As we took to the table to order our dinner we were attacked by a heard of Buffalo adorned with lights. Oye our food, Cooked to perfection smothered in our favorite, green chile. I was craving red chile as well so I had Christmas, both red and green. Our belly were happy. It was time to get some shut eye for our travels tomorrow. The Eklund Hotel is a must if you crave authentic wild west. Less

Apparently you can't be seated without it. One lady took drink orders, but they never materialized. Second lady came much later to take food & drink order. My hot tea came to the table as lukewarm water out of the tap, not once, but TWICE. It was not hot enough to make the tea. Soup was served lukewarm. My sandwich was served without any condiments, & I had to ask for one. Hardly any meat on the sandwich. We waited, and waited for our bill. It's not a cookie cutter modern motel. It's a great experience in a well preserved turn of the 20th century hotel. Lovely saloon and dining room. Friendly staff.... More

To live the Wild Wild West from the comfort of a beautiful, historical, hotel this is the place! Small, intimate, elegant yet wonderfully casual. Has a great authentic saloon and at least a weekend's worth of interesting things to do nearby. Located away from the hustle bustle of the modern day, you'll feel like you've gone back through time. Has a great authentic saloon and at least a weekend's worth of interesting things to do nearby. Located away from the hustle bustle of the modern day, you'll feel like you've gone back through time. It sits right on Main Street in the small western town of Clayton NM at the crossroads of hwys 64 and 87 (I think- I know 64 is right) We stumbled on it by accident and were totally charmed. Its affordable and has all the modern comforts but with amazing historic charm. You can get a room with a balcony over Main street and watch both sunrises and sunsets. Once in a while you'll even see a cowboy w/ spurs on horseback ride by and you'll definitely see some tumble weeds. The kids will love the family friendly saloon with authentic Western decor (like a bison head) and a piano that the public is welcome to enjoy. Ask the staff to show you the bullet holes in the ceiling that are about a hundred or so years old! Oh, and the food is delicious and there's a great breakfast buffet included with your room with fresh homemade quiche and cinnamon rolls. Less
Good tacos
Staff couldn't be friendlier!! Excellent place to stay in small town New Mexico. Clean rooms, restaurant downstairs. Recommend highly!
Small old, quaint hotel in the middle of town. Upgrade to the suite. The regular queen-sized rooms are too small for my taste. Service is slow ... but what do you expect, you are in a small laid-back town. The food in the Saloon is pretty good. Again the service is sporadic and slow ... so settle in, order a nice local beer and don't be in a rush and you will be fine.... More

Cool hotel! Had a room that opened on balcony and sat out there watching thunder storms roll thru, enjoyed our stay!
The people, food, service etc. Just great!

Loved our stay here. Great hotel and staff.
What better way to enter New Mexico than to stay at a historic hotel run by the nicest people in the world. The room decor makes me think of Georgia O'Keeffe. Somewhat spare but perfect for the setting, all wood and wrought iron. Getting a room off of the front balcony was an added plus.... More

food was decent, service slow, cool building though.
We were stopped by a whit out snow storm. The Eklund gave us a nice room and did not raise the price because of the road being closed. The staff was great and the food was good. I would recomend the Eklund to any one stopping in the area.... More

My friends and I were passing through town and stopped here for the night. There was a dining hall with great food and live music. The drink selection was also superfluous. The rooms were very nice and cozy, as well as affordable, and the breakfast was delicious. I'd recommend this place to anyone.... More

Good Service and friendly owners. Like stepping back in time.
Fascinating, fun, historic and adorable.
Pleasant and quiet, the rooms are clean and comfortable. Seems as if a top down cleaning has taken place recently. Nice also that there is a dining room downstairs with good food and service. Have stayed here twice and will highly recommend it to friends. Friendly staff and towns-people.... More
