Visiting from our of town and did a drop in workout. Gym staff were super communicative. Coach Christopher helped break down the muscle up steps for me. By the end of class, I was able to reliably do bar muscle ups which is a huge development for me. Staff were amazing and gym members were equally as great and supportive. Would absolutely go back whenever I'm in town.

I joined CFA after getting burnt out on years of competitive powerlifting. It was a much needed change of pace and has made training fun again. More importantly I’ve met friends and found a sense of community that many other gyms lack.
Came to CFA as someone bored of a commercial gym and wanting to start somewhere fresh with a new challenge. Every coach that I interacted with not only put up with every question I threw their way but also took the time to make sure I understood what I needed to do. My fitness has improved consistently ever since I became a member and I have a new amazing community of peers near where I live.

I've been a member here since 2016. During that time I've met and exceeded every fitness goal I've set and made many new friends. Last year, CFA financed my L1 certificate so I could join the coaching staff, one of the best decisions I've ever made.

This place is great! All of the coaches have been knowledgeable, supportive, patient, and kind. In case it’s helpful to share my background, I had never consistently worked out until coming here a little over six months ago. Growing up as "the fat kid" with asthma, I have a lot of negative associations and insecurities regarding exercise. My time here has been healing and provided helpful first steps in my fitness journey. The workouts can be intimidating, but everything is scalable. You will survive. It was a lot to learn at the start, but it gets less confusing. Many people here are impressive athletes, but they have largely been kind and welcoming to me despite my background and ability level. I was really nervous about joining a CrossFit gym. When I first called to inquire information, I chatted with Gabe and instantly knew this was the gym. The coaches are very supportive and informative. I loved going through their Foundation series and was excited to try my first class. Best decision I made this year! Love this gym! GREAT group of people and Jocelyn is a great coach! I was in Pittsburgh for a little over 2 weeks for work, and wanted to find a gym to work out at while I was there. Stopped here the first day with the idea that I’d gym hop till I found one I liked. Well.... didn’t end up going anywhere else. Fell in love with this place. Great setup inside with three double-sided racks (2 spots per side per rack - 12 total spots) with a nice big open space in the middle of the gym. They also have an “upper” area where they allow open gym time whenever someone is there (which is most of the time throughout the day). They’re also located at a nice spot where a 400m run is around the block they’re located on which makes running WODs easy. The people are great here. I’ve done drop ins where you’re the “outsider” and the men in the class act like they’re better than you and look at you as some type of a threat (as another man). Quite common actually. Not here at all. I was only there for 2 weeks and from day 1 I was made to feel like i had been there for years by not only the coach but the other people working out there. As far as the equipment, I’d rate it as 3.5 stars. They have everything you would need, but some of the stuff needs to be either refurbished or replaced. They also have very few bands to use. If you’re not a person that uses bands at all, then no issue but I use bands a lot for pre-workout resistance stretching and I didn’t have many options for different resistance weights. As far as the WODs, I find this to be very subjective. Personally, I prefer WODs to be varying and always changing. It keeps my body from getting used to a certain lift or working out a certain muscle group. My current home gym uses this varying method and I love it. CFA seems to do cycles. By that, I mean that they do generally the same thing every week but build each week however have some kind of variation albeit slight. And by generally I mean that they vary the WODs every week but they’re pretty much the same style. For example: September 10 (Tuesday) A1. Vups, 8-12x3; rest :30 sec A2. Bicycle sit ups, 10-18 alternatingx3; rest 1 min (controlled tempo) + Teams of two: (28 min amrap/one working at a time/split evenly) 80 cal bike 80 cal row 160 Du’s 60 cal bike 60 cal row 120 Du’s 40 cal bike 40 cal row 80 Du’s September 17 (Tuesday) A1. Vups, 8-14x3; rest :30 sec A2. Bicycle sit ups, 12-20 alternatingx3; rest 1 min (controlled tempo) + Teams of two: (30 min amrap/one working at a time/split evenly) 150 Du’s 150 Cal bike 150 Cal row September 24 (Tuesday) Teams of two: (35 min amrap/one working at a time/split evenly) 80 Du’s 60 Cal bike 60 Cal row + A1. Vups, 8-14x3; rest :30 sec A2. Bicycle sit ups, 12-20 alternatingx3; rest :45 sec (controlled tempo) You can start to see the pattern. On one hand, I can see the value of this as you can compare how much stronger you’re getting through out the cycle. If you like this type of workout schedule then this is exactly where you need to be. However as I stated earlier, my personal preference is to always change. Doesn’t mean I would knock down the rating at all because this was a nice change of pace from what I’m used to, it’s just a different style than I’m used to. As a whole, I’ll absolutely come to this gym again. It’s a great atmosphere and like I said earlier Jocelyn is a GREAT coach. As proof, (and don’t tell my home gym this...) I got my first EVER muscle up (ring) here based on not only jocelyn’s Advice but also two of the guys in the class (Bill and Matt). Additionally, I did my first true unbroken double unders here. I’d give it 10 out of 5 stars and will absolutely suggest this place to any colleague that travels to Pittsburgh for work and I’ll absolutely be stopping again if I find myself in Pittsburgh. I think that this place would be a great fit for me! However, out of the 20 times that I’ve called, I have yet to be able to get a person on the phone to ask about memberships and classes.

Called to ask about the program, they didn't get back until a week later. I went to a class and had a great experience, however, I was only in town for another few weeks. I never heard back about my ability to purchase any packages and haven't done another class. Bummer.

Things I really like: The competitors have a (huge) room where they can train and the rest of us have a different (huge) room where we can workout. The bathrooms are amazing and CFA has showers! They'll start you on something that you 'can' do and build you step by step to getting that first pull-up. The community within the gym also supports your goals and provides an amazingly safe space where you can come and work on yourself without being judged, but by getting cheered on by everyone around you. I wouldn't say I'm a very critical person, but I would say that I 'notice' things, good or bad, and all I ever notice at CFA are all things good! i went in a few weeks ago - yes, it's a large impressive facility, but was unimpressed by the staff who appeared aloof and could care less about my interest in starting. Yah, ok. Bye. Why would I pay for that?

Max has always been a bit of a quiet kid who loves all things related to science and outdoors, he loves to run, but so far has shown little interest in sports. Tee-ball, nope! Soccer shots, a disaster! That is fine with me, but I do think it’s important for him to try new things, stay active, and follow directions from adults. So a couple weeks ago we signed up for our first cycle of CrossFit kids. Max was unsure and shy but Coach Jocelyn put him at ease and got him right into the mix. He loves the games, is able to follow Coach Jocelyn’s directions and modeling, and after just 2 weeks I see his confidence growing!! I definitely see the difference outside of class as well. Since starting CrossFit kids, he tried both monkey bars and a climbing wall for the first time, at play places we have been going to for years. In addition, we have brought our very athletic and outgoing 9 year old neighbor along with us. He has just as much fun and is challenged by learning new movement patterns such as presses and thrusters. I would not hesitate to recommend this program to other parents.
