I read a lot of reviews before I came here, and disregarded the negative reviews but I wish I put them into consideration. This place is a money pit!!!!! First of all, the woman at the front desk was extremely unwelcoming. I almost felt like a bit of a nuisance. I decided to try this out because my insurance said they covered this center. After my appointment during the payment process, the woman told me 99% of insurance does not cover the TMJ and only covers the sleep apnea portion. If I knew I would’ve had to fork out hundreds on this just for the first visit I wouldn’t have come.The doctor listened to my concerns, but was with me for about 5 minutes. We didn’t make any progress except for taking an expensive x-ray and MRI. They pushed the MRI (which is $350) and basically said that was the only way to move forward with any treatment. He hardly felt my jaw or did any exercises to help relieve pain or help with range of motion. I ended up doing the MRI because I was desperate, but they told me to come back to do a review of it and THEN make a plan. Each time you visit it is $200, so I was reluctant to come back and pay another $200 just to see the results of my MRI and get a diagnosis. I had already paid $200 for the appointment alone, then $150 for the x ray, and $350 for the MRI and left with zero plan, treatment, or home care recommendations. Each time you visit this office, there is a $200 fee just to see the doctor and then any additional fees for treatments. I read reviews saying the splints and guards they provide are upwards of $2000-$4000 which to me is absolutely insane. Many people who come here are very desperate, these people take advantage of that desperation to charge insane amounts of money. I am 24 years old and do not have $6000-$8000 to spend on my jaw. They did not offer any payment plan or deductions. In conclusion, do not go here unless you have THOUSANDS of dollars to spend. I’m sure these treatments have worked for some but at a high high cost and lengthy treatment.I ended up finding a chiropractor and injector that is covered by my insurance and I am going that route. I have been suffering from TMJ pain for almost four years now and have tried other various very expensive treatments over the years (physical therapy, splints, etc) without relief. I finally decided to visit Dr. Mangelson and it was the best decision I could have made for my TMJ.From my very first appointment I knew I was in the right place. Everyone at the Center for Sleep Apnea and TMJ is incredibly accommodating and empathetic, especially Dr. Mangelson. He took the time to listen to my concerns and walked me through an evidence-based treatment plan. After an MRI to determine that my discs were in place, I received a lower daytime orthotic to wear as much as possible. I noticed almost immediate relief. They also referred me to a physical therapist that specializes in TMJ treatment who helped me immensely. I went from a 23mm opening to 36mm in just two weeks. After two months using the daytime orthotic I received a nighttime appliance that has provided me further relief.Overall my jaw pain has significantly lessened, my opening has improved greatly, and I am able to chew without pain. They also worked with me on pricing for my treatment which was significantly cheaper than anywhere else I've been to or seen (my previous 'TMJ specialist' charged me $4,500 for just a nighttime orthotic that did absolutely nothing.) Overall I am so so grateful for the Center for Sleep Apnea and TMJ. This has truly been best experience I've ever had in a medical office. Unfortunately it is so expensive to get help here. Health insurance will not cover TMJ. Middleclass and lower class will struggle to meet the expensive office visits especially because you may need several repeat visits. The staff is great, so is the doctor I see. I went to this office to see if I could get help with a very specific jaw issue. My jaw is very crooked, and has underdeveloped/missing bone on one side of its "hinges". Which causes occasional clicking, and limited range of mobility. I wanted to get it finally looked at to see what could be done, even though I was pretty certain the only true fix is surgery to correct the lopsidedness and add bone/fake bone in. My insurance recommended this place so we thought it would be a good fit. After an initial visit where we did a scan of my jaw they told us it would be a week before they'd have the results of that in depth scan. A week later we come back only to find out the scan only scanned the top two inches of my skull. Not sure why they waited a week to tell us that, but okay. We do the scan again and they try and charge us again, absolutely not. Then the Dr makes a plan and says that PRP injections would be his solution for my jaw. He explained we will draw my blood and take out the good stuff and plasma and inject that into my jaw joints. It will stimulate tissue and therefore bone growth. He also recommended a mouthguard to help my jaw not clench at night. I was wary, but with his confidence and my dad/I's trust and naivety we went for it. Then we are hit with "oh insurance doesn't cover this, and Utah is one of 6 states that your jaw doesn't get included in dental or medical insurance so you must pay entirely out of pocket". Mind you the entire reason we did this was because we had met our insurance OOP so we were expecting full coverage, hence our insurance recommending us here. We were so desperate for help we said okay and paid $1,400 for the mouth guard, and then a couple hundred for the first of three injections. The mouthguard ended up being made of acrylic, like the same acrylic for fake nails. And tasted just like it! It was half an inch thick and barely fit my mouth, I couldn't close my mouth or lips and had them adjust it and shave it down. They did "as much as they could" and it still didn't fit. Then tried to charge me $100+ for the "adjustment" which is insane considering the cost of the mouth guard that didn't even fit. The injections, they were incredibly painful and I knew right away something was off and they weren't helping. It was a 1.5 inch long needle straight into your jaw joints. With no numbing. I asked repeatedly if they had anything else they could do for numbing as it hurt incredibly bad, and they said no. The only "numbing" they offered was keyboard cleaner air blown onto your cheek and I guess the cold was supposed to numb, spoiler alert, it didn't. My jaw would then be swollen with liquid for two days after. I was supposed to do this 3 times, and only did two before doing more research into the procedure. Wish I had done so sooner, turns out it is not FDA approved and is experimental which is why it can't be covered by insurance. And usually they do numb you for it. And give you jaw exercises for afterwards so you don't lose mobility further, which this Dr didn't do for me. I now am left with even less jaw mobility than before, and puffier cheeks, and a lot less money. And medical trauma. I called and let them know of my research findings and they completely disregarded and ignored all that, and chalked up my discomfort to the mouth guard not working properly. Oh you mean the one you wouldn't fix more for me? They then transferred me so I could be scheduled to come in so they could try and adjust the mouthguard again since they thought it was the issue, but instead they hung up on me and never called back. Haha. Overall quite the horrible experience and I wouldn't recommend that procedure to anyone but maybe my worst enemy. Less

Dr. Mangelson thoroughly explained what was happening in my jaw with a visual guide, which has really helpful to see, and also showed me how the mouth guard helps stabilize your jaw. I received the night guard first and within a few days I already saw progress, but when I got my day guard things dramatically improved as well. I only had to wear my day guard for 3 months, despite my disability. During the process they were always ready to explain and adjust their strategy to any problems that had come up in order to get me the best treatment possible. I am no longer suffering from a locked jaw and can now eat, speak, and sleep normally thanks to Dr. Mangelson and his team. Less

He called me back with a brief update and I’ve had radio silence since then. No one has called to update me, check in, not a single word. Read your contract CAREFULLY! I was impressed with the office in helping my son with a TMJ problem, but the charges and billing have been outrageous. The doctor was great with helping fix the jaw misalignment. It was recommended that we get a night guard at a cost of more than $1300 to help stabilize his jaw and lessen the inflammation. We didn’t have them money so we saved up to get the night guard. 7 months later we made the appointment, got the night guard and paid the fee. At the fitting they explained that as the jaw realigns, the night guard might have to be modified due to some high spots that could cause some discomfort. We scheduled a follow up appointment for 3 weeks later. The night guard did need some adjustments at that next appointment, and we were charged another $140- (for the night guard that we had just paid $1300 for 3 weeks earlier, and wasn’t doing the job it was made to do) When I questioned the additional charge I was told that it was in the contract I signed. I am not sure why the adjustments were not included in the cost of the night guard- when they knew it would need them for it to work properly, as the inflammation settled down? Or why they hid the fees in the contract. Unfortunately I can’t schedule another adjustment until I save another $140. Less

This team is FANTASTIC. I discovered them while I was TERRIFIED - my jaw briefly locked when I had a massive yawn, and I flipped out. My dentist sent me here, and, from the first moment, they put me at ease. I initially worked with Dr. Spencer (who, I came to learn, is world-renowned for his expertise with Sleep Apnea & TMJ), and they worked through solutions with me. Through the consult, I learned that my TMJ symptoms were likely sleep-apnea related. I was shocked to hear that, but found out that it's pretty common for TMJ-sufferers to be compensating for sleep apnea, i.e., clenching teeth all night long to "protect" the airway. THE MINUTE Dr. Spencer asked me about my sleep it clicked. I snored. I gasped awake choking and coughing at least a few times each week. This review could be 20 pages long, truly, but what matters is that this team walked me through every step for my solution hand-in-hand. An at-home sleep study (which they helped me coordinate) confirmed what the docs knew - I had mild sleep apnea! Many women in my shoes may think they suffer from a NUMBER of other issues, and may be medicating as prescribed for those issues, but it turns out that it may simply be a lack of quality sleep/oxygen to the brain. AND - the best part, for me, was that I didn't have to work with a CPAP machine. My diagnosis allowed me to try what they call a mandibular device - it's like a retainer that I wear at night that keeps my airway clear. Now - a year+ later, I don't snore and i don't wake up gasping (something I thought was totally normal bc my dad does that same thing). These days, my appointments are with the fabulous Dr. Kevin Mangelson, who is a DELIGHT to talk with and a comfort when you have worries. But truly, this entire office is awesome, and will put you at ease and do anything they can to help your ailments. Full disclosure on these guys - they so fully changed my quality of life and sleep that I now get to work with them. I have taken them on as a PR client and I LOVE singing their praises. The quality of help I received at this office was phenomenal. I came in because I had jaw pain that no one else was able to help me with. The only negative thing I can say is that I waited in the waiting room for almost 10 minutes past my appointment time. Then a clinician named Jake came and brought me back into a room which was very clean and he took my initial information before I met the Dr. The doctor who saw me was Dr Mangelson. He was very funny, friendly and knowledgeable. He patiently answered all my questions and never made me feel like any of my questions were silly. After my appointment, Jake personally walked me to the check out desk where I got checked out with a receptionist before leaving. It was overall a good experience. I received great customer service and the office was kept spotless. But what is most important when going to the doctors office is that they help heal you, and I can honestly say I no longer experience the jaw pain that I had before. Would recommend to a friend. Finally I have relief from the terrific jaw pain I have been suffering from. For a number of years I have experienced jaw pain and locking. I was referred to Dr. Mangelson who did an unlocking procedure and then fitted me with an orthotic appliance. I have never felt better. I can't thank my dentist enough for referring me.... More
