We have both benefited greatly from the experiences, especially the small group program which enables us both to participate in tailor-made exercise sessions, which we have found to be especially helpful for older folks such as ourselves. In addition to increasing basic physical strength in a comprehensive fashion, the workouts help us with weight control and improvement of balance, the latter being an area of special need for older adults. Tony, Mira and their staff have been great to work with--we unreservedly recommend their business and it's services to any who are interested in improving their physical well-being. Less
Having taking some time off from BJJ this was a great place to restart and re-learn everything I’ve forgotten. Tony, and the other coaches (Vicky and Brian) have been patient, and great to learn from. Great class sizes, great classmates and a fun place to train. I look forward to every class I attend!

The jiu-jitsu program at Industrial Strength is great. They take care to keep the mats clean, make beginners feel welcome and supported, and their curriculum is super organized which makes your progress feel more tangible. Although I am participating only in the Jui Jitsu program, I will mention that the weight-lifting area has superior quality barbells, plates, squat racks etc. There is also a huge range of kettlebells. I believe the strength training equipment can only be used by students that signup for a fitness program or one-on-one instructor led sessions. Final note, this is from the perspective of someone that has done a (very) little Jui Jitsu about ten years ago, and has had almost no exercise since the beginning of COVID (2020). -Mike Less

I discovered Industrial Strength, enrolled in a few private training sessions, took a 1 month weight-training “on ramp” class and progressed quickly to be able to take the kettlebell classes and strength and conditioning classes. Prior to joining this gym I had minimal experience with weights, and basically lacked the knowledge (and accountability) on how to perform proper strength-based exercises. Industrial Strength is great because the coaches teach safety and technique and provide a holistic training structure - you just need to show up ready to put in the work! The gym’s ethos is about training for overall durability - for life. Now I’m at a point in my training progression where I never thought possible. I love this gym! Less

I was fresh off of a breakup and looking for a new hobby to revitalize myself when I discovered the sport of weightlifting. Being instantly captivated by it, I started gym shopping in Portland and talked to a few coaches at a few different gyms. I was looking for a place to learn the highly technical lifts from an experienced coach with a great team atmosphere. After talking with Mira, head coach of the weightlifting program at Industrial Strength in Portland, on the phone, I knew that I had found something special. I really appreciated that, instead of trying to sell me on her gym, she took the time to understand what I was looking for and make sure that her gym would be a good fit for me. Having been at the gym for four months now, I can honestly say that it has the best team training environment of any gym to which I have belonged. When I joined the gym, I knew that Mira would be a fantastic coach, and that has certainly been the case: her patience, attention to detail, and her simple, effective cues have helped me improve my form and increase my strength in a very short amount of time. What I did not expect to find at the gym was a community of hilarious, supportive, and loving lifters who make me look forward to coming to the gym every day. At the risk of sounding trite, it feels like something of a miracle in our modern, disconnected world to find true community, and that is a testament not only to the wonderful members who make up the gym, but to Mira herself, who continually creates a space for us all to show up as our most authentic selves and get better at this weird sport we call weightlifting. You know that joyous feeling you had as a kid during recess in elementary school running around on the playground, doing gymnastics on the grass, or playing an intense game of kickball with your friends for 30 minutes in between multiplication and division, science, or cursive writing - that is how Industrial Strength makes me feel. As a busy healthcare worker, weightlifting at Industrial Strength is often the highlight of my day - a place where I can focus on improving my lifts while also surrounding myself in a community where people cheer for you regardless of whether you are lifting 10 kg or 100 kg. I spent countless hours searching for a weightlifting gym prior to moving to Portland, and visited several gyms in the area before joining Industrial Strength. Having spent several years away from weightlifting, I knew I would be a bit nervous to pick up a barbell again, so searching for a positive, supportive weightlifting environment was paramount. At the heart of this welcoming community is the coach, Mira. She fosters an environment where you can unapologetically be yourself without judgment. The gym motto is quite literally "come lift as you are!" Whether you are a seasoned weightlifter or have never touched a barbell before, you can weight lift under the watchful eye of Mira, who consistently provides tailored coaching and programming according to your goals, strength, skill level, and mobility. Mira has an expert understanding of the dynamics of weightlifting and has a keen eye when evaluating lifts. Not only does Mira provide personalized feedback, warm-ups, and exercises to accommodate injuries or different body architecture, but she believes in you even when you don't believe in yourself. She always exudes positivity, encouragement, and warmth, and is one of the most selfless and giving people I have ever met. She invests both in herself and the weightlifting community by learning new techniques for coaching through seminars, hosting community weightlifting events, and participating in weightlifting organizations to promote diversity and inclusion within the sport. You haven't met the best weightlifting coach unless you've met Mira. And because of the environment that Mira and Industrial Strength have fostered, the community is made up of kind-hearted, supportive teammates from all walks of life who gather in the gym to lift heavy weights and outside the gym for hikes, rollerskating, dinner, and more. If you're looking for a Portland-based inclusive, supportive weightlifting gym where you'll see both big lifts and belly laughs, Industrial Strength is the place for you. Whether you are new to Portland or are a Portland native, you'll find your second home at Industrial Strength. Less

Adam, my first instructor, instantly made me feel welcome and he exudes a genuine passion for what he does. His knowledge and expertise in fitness training are evident, as he took the time to educate me on the different exercises and techniques we would be working on. This review is long overdue as I have been a member of this gym for many years now. I am, and have been, a member of quite a few gyms but honestly I couldn’t imagine ever leaving Industrial Strength. The facility, coaching, and family atmosphere is something that is simply unmatched anywhere else. Over the years, Mira and Tony have cultivated a rich culture of hard work, motivation, acceptance, and encouragement. I have seen many new members come in over the years—almost always apprehensive, a little nervous, or even self-conscious. It is amazing how quickly committed, dedicated, and positive they become about embarking on their own fitness journey. This is almost entirely due to Mira and Tony’s methodology and making sure that everyone is able to start where they need to and progress at a pace best for themselves. But it is also in large part due to how this community embraces anyone who walks in the door. You feel like you are never alone in your journey, but in an extremely supportive and motivational family who only wants you to succeed. Thanks to Industrial Strength I personally have achieved a level of fitness that I never knew I could. I am not sure I could have gotten here without the incredible coaching and this community of like-minded athletes. Everyone has their unique goals when it comes to fitness. But it is no longer a secret in the fitness world that strength training is the answer to longevity, body composition, durability, and cardiac (and mental) health. Strength training has been proven to increase your quality of life no matter your age. I became a member of Industrial Strength in December, after taking a few years away from Olympic weightlifting. Mira’s coaching is truly unparalleled, whether it comes to athlete safety, technical aspects of lifting, or simply providing motivation and positive energy. Mira has created an amazing community and safe space for all, and I couldn’t recommend it highly enough!
Can’t say enough about this gym!! The coaching, the facilities and equipment are superb! If you coming to improve your technique or simply to get stronger, more mobile or maybe all of the above, your in the right place!!!
Cannot say enough good things about this gym and the folks that run it. Mira and Tony are two of the most knowledgeable and experienced strength coaches out there. If you're looking for a weightlifting team, Jiu Jitsu, kettlebells, general strength training, and some of the best personal training available, go see them!!
I train with Mira as a remote and in person athlete. Her breadth of knowledge and experience has proven incredibly valuable to me both in terms of learning the intricacies of weightlifting and the special needs of master athletes. Her inclusive spirit is infectious and her commitment to the highest standards of integrity is an honor to be a part of. Highest marks. 💪
Amazing gyms. Amazing owners and a great community
Atmosphere was great and everyone was very welcoming. Coaches are very knowledgeable for all fitness levels.
Industrial Strength is a great gym! I love that they have an on-ramp for new clients. They break down all the different exercises and give you pointers on your form. Everyone is so friendly and welcoming and you can tell the coaches are very experienced in their field.

When I found Industrial Strength I was excited and a little nervous to try kettlebells for the first time, but the coaches helped me learn safely and effectively. After two years, I can’t believe how many benefits this gym has given me. My persistent low back pain is gone. My everyday posture is better. I’m stronger at 41 than I’ve ever been. I feel great! Another thing I love is that beginners and very experienced people are equally welcome, it’s all super adaptable to your current level. This gym is truly a gem, we’re so lucky to have it here in North Portland. ~~ (Original review from 2022) This gym has improved my life in many ways- joining was honestly one of my best decisions ever. I’m a 40 year old mom of a young child. I was pretty out of shape when I joined, but since going 3x per week for 10 months now, my physical and mental health have improved in a major way, and it’s really fun, too. It’s very rewarding to use heavier weights over time- and my improved strength is definitely noticeable with everyday tasks like carrying my kid around. I plan to keep going for years to come. Less
I’ve been to a lot of Jiu Jitsu gyms and I really like the atmosphere here and the coaching is very positive but I get helpful tips as well.
This is a top notch operation. Every 'body' is treated with respect and offered the necessary support as they learn. Safety is paramount along with the best practices for all activities.

Great modern and clean facility. Awesome ownership and staff.
Great group of instructors at Industrial Strength. This is my second go round after being enrolled there last year but having to leave because of family scheduling. Started back up this year and it felt like I never left. Tony is so welcoming and so are the people that participate in their classes.
I've been going here for years and love the place.
Great place to train, clean and everyone is respectful and friendly. Managed really well - I do kickboxing and BJJ here.

Super happy with the quality of services, training and facilities at Industrial Strength. Tony made our family feel comfortable right from the first day and each training session since. We highly recommend Industrial Strength to anyone looking to get into Jiu Jitsu or kickboxing.
Super friendly and immaculate gym. Highly recommended
BJJ at Industrial Strength is top notch! The facility is very clean. The students are friendly and want everyone to do well. I train judo with Tony (at another dojo now since closed) and he is an outstanding instructor and a beast on the mat!

I couldn't have asked a better place to get started on Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. After a little over a year waiting for gyms to open to train, I started calling around town on a Monday morning and left a couple VM here and there. Within the hour, I was talking with coach Tony and getting the paperwork for their intro class the following weekend (So much detail goes into their customer service, I received a welcome postcard hand signed within days). Came to the class and was warmly welcomed by Tony and experienced students wearing Gis. It was a great event for beginners and I was hooked enough to sign-up for their half-off first month rate immediately. Since then, I have taken every class available, and even dabbed in kickboxing. One of the special features of this gym are the 4 highly-dedicated BJJ coaches applying a monthly-based program by topic (escapes, takedowns, etc.), and accessible classes in the morning and evenings. And last but not least, the diverse community of people that come to this gym creates a learning, competitive and caring environment that keeps me coming back over and over again. I recommend you give them a call and hope to see you on the mat. 🤙 Less

I began using kettlebells for the first time during the last year, and I began training at IS with the On-Ramp series, coached by both Adam and Tony, in March 2021. The month-long series provides a solid foundation for those brand new to kettlebells, and will help develop fundamentals and technique for those who already have some experience under a bell; the series also includes some exposure to barbell strength training, but the primary focus will be on learning to effectively and safely utilize kettlebells. By the end, you’ll have a better understanding of the fundamentals, you’ll have opportunities to ask questions about your training, and you will be stronger than when you first walked in. Less

My son had another week before he was heading back to base. He wanted some personal one on one training to hone his weight lifting regiment. Tony promptly moved his schedule around to accommodate him. In those 2 sessions my son got his moneys worth getting his skills honed by Tony's coaching. Olympic weightlifting: Mira’s outstanding coaching helped redefine strength on my own terms. Since starting at Industrial Strength in 2017, Mira has exhibited her dedication to safely improving my weightlifting technique. This dedication started during our onboarding movement screening and continues to be demonstrated whenever I’m working with her. She knows the ebb and flow that a lower back injury can bring, and respects days that I need to rest (or take time away from the gym for my mental health). This gym, or should I say this community is amazing! I've never been around so many strong, kind, motivated people in my life! I train here and have worked with everyone. Their team is so incredibly knowledgable. Plus, they are passionately committed to proper movement and taking the time to correctly build strength, avoid injury, and build a strong lifestyle. Whether you're young or old (I've seen kids and folks in their 80s training) they work with every individual to help them meet their goals - whatever their goals may be. On top of their expertise and commitment they've built a community of kind, caring people who encourage one another on their strength journey. It's common to hear people cheering each other on in classes or nominating one another to be featured on the Beastmode board on the gym wall. You always feel welcome and supported by everyone. And at a gym?!? I don't know about you, but this has not been my experience at other gyms (and I've been to a few). The folks who own and run the gym, Mira and Tony, are truly the bees knees! They are just awesome people who'll send you flowers when you're sick, be in the front row cheering for you at your meet, and encourage and support you as you work towards your goals. They're just exceptional people. I cannot recommend this gym enough. Whether you're looking for a place to train, take some classes, learn Jiu Jitsu (haven't tried yet, but it always looks fun) I doubt you'll find a better place to do it. Less

The gym is incredibly clean and aesthetically pleasing, with a wide variety of programming and training options, but it feels like a tight knit family. The owners and rest of the coaching staff are wonderful. I came to Industrial looking for a supportive fitness and weightlifting community, and that it exactly what I've found. Training with Industrial has been more than finding a gym to throw on my lifters and get my workout in. Our weightlifting team has helped me to grow not only as a new lifter, but also as an individual. Prior to coming to Industrial, I was hesitant to compete in my first local meet and had put off signing up for multiple competitions. My coach and several of my rad new team mates helped me gain the skill and confidence to believe in myself and I had a great first meet experience in May. I love lifting at Industrial with my new team mates. It is a great training environment, that focuses on quality of movement and longevity in the sport. The programming is well thought out, and makes room for both a team weightlifting environment and periods of individualization throughout training cycles. I have nothing but positive things to say about training here, and I would recommend it to anyone in the area looking to get stronger! Less

If you are looking for a supportive environment to challenge yourself and improve your strength and fitness, you will not be disappointed with Industrial Strength. Like many weightlifters I fell in love with the sport through CrossFit. As my desire to improve my weightlifting grew, I realized that I would need more focused coaching and tailored programming to ensure sustained progress. My coach at the time recommended a few weightlifting gyms around Portland, Industrial Strength being one of them, as a means for me to grow and push through my performance plateau. Industrial Strength has the prefect mix for me: a dedicated, highly-qualified coaching staff, a variety of classes and weightlifting disciplines, a welcoming and accepting membership, and well-maintained facilities/equipment. It is very much my ‘third place’. It is more than simply a training facility, it is a community of fantastic people and a source of great friendships. With the support of my coaches and teammates, I have been able to progress as a weightlifter and address the on-going mobility issues caused by old sports injuries. If you are on the fence about a new training facility, come to Industrial Strength, you will not be disappointed. Less
Super friendly, clean and organized!
Relatively new to the gym but already feel great confidence it'll get me closer to my goals! The trainers are very knowledgable and friendly, the Strength and Conditioning class is a fun challenge, and the members are often consistently motivated and positive which goes great lengths in keeping me accountable to maintaining this terrific habit. Very glad to have found it!

The group kettlebell class with Arryn has been awesome, as well! The crew at Industrial Strength keep workouts challenging, encourage personal and physical growth, yet never neglect to focus on safety and technique. For the first time in a while, I'm not in a gym riddled with peers who have numerous injuries and are still being encouraged to go heavier with sloppy form. They know what they are doing. Not only have the coaches been immensely helpful, but the community they have drawn in has been so welcoming. I am extremely happy with my decision to invest in Industrial Strength! Less

Once my doctor cleared me, I joined Industrial Strength. My memebership began several months after a surgery to fix a ruptured left bicep. Post procedure, I realized I needed to level up in my training and become stronger to fend off similar tissue injuries in a possible future. My Industrial Strength coach Arryn Grogan has done a truly impressive job in helping me regain the strength that had been somewhat dormant in me for years. Aside from the issue of a serious injury rehab, I am also in my late 40’s, I felt like the process was going to be uphill all the way, but Arryn helped me realize that all this was actually a great opportunity to start over and let go of past fitness efforts. Now fast forward to today. My friends frequently ask me often bewildered, how I lost 85 pounds and became far more fit than ever after being so badly injured. A large part of that answer stems from my training at Industrial Strength, a wonderful gym that I must not fail to mention- is ideal for people serious about bettering their health instead of training for vanity. It is a humble environment in which to learn, an ideal setting for fitness and is not some gym hangout scene as so many other locations have devolved into. The staff reflects attributes of the owners, Mira and Tony, they are sincerely kindhearted and supportive. I am grateful to be a member. =m. Less
I travel over an hour 1-2x a week to train Jiu Jitsu at Industrial Strength. Excellent coaching and very friendly environment.
Top notch classes from very knowledgeable, professional, and friendly instructors. They gym has a very welcoming atmosphere and is an excellent choice for all skill levels. Don't hesitate to try this place out if you want to learn Brazilian Jiu Jitsu!
Industrial Strength Gym is the best! Really knowledgeable trainers, clean, well equipped and spacious facility, and an atmosphere that's friendly, relaxed, and uncompromising in their serious about fitness.

It is a bit pricey but more than a steal if you go regularly (and definitely if you also take the martial arts classes). The trainers focus on technique above all other things, giving you a strong foundation to build on and saving you doctor bills down the road due to injuries from bad from. As someone who has always been somewhat active and familiar with the inside of gyms, having an instructor has changed everything. I just wish I had discovered this type of gym sooner... although I don't think this type of gym is common either, so if you're reading this congratulations, you just found a gem. Less
I have been a member of Industrial Strength for almost 4 years and I can't say enough good things about this gym and it's coaches. It has great focused training (that WILL help you reach whatever goal you have), wonderful people, and a fantastic atmosphere that will make it so you'll never have to "drag" yourself to the gym.
What a great gym. I spent 1 year here learning Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and Coach Tony is such a wonderful and knowledgeable person. The atmosphere is very inviting, and the people that attend all their classes are very welcoming. People who may be on the fence about trying BJJ or attending a strength gym should give this place a try, you'll keep coming back.
Our home away from home when visiting Portland. Hands down the best coaching and services for all humans who care about being strong for the rest of their lives, in mind and body! Tony and Mira have a special thing going on in PDX. If you live here you need to go here!

I was depressed, had no energy and generally felt pretty lousy most of the time. I knew I needed to make a change so I set up a time to check the gym out and was immediately impressed by the facility and the owners (Mira and Tony). The gym is exceptionally clean, organized and outfitted with top-of-the-line equipment. Tony, Mira and the other two coaches (Arryn and Adam) are knowledgeable, down to earth and genuinely interested in making you stronger. I’ve learned a great deal since I started and continue to learn something new pretty much every time I’m there. It wouldn’t be an exaggeration to say that I look forward to and enjoy each and every class. Safety and good form are emphasized above all else. The coaches are careful to watch everyone in class to make sure they are executing the lifts correctly and they are able to provide helpful feedback for novices and experienced lifters alike. Learning how to properly squat, deadlift, bench press and military press has improved my life immensely. Like most worthwhile things in life, getting stronger takes time, patience, and effort. It definitely won’t happen overnight, but I can say without a doubt that I’m stronger than I’ve ever been and I feel better than I have in years. Finally, one of my favorite things about the gym is the atmosphere. I’ve made some good friends at IS and it feels like a second family. From my experience, big egos and bad attitudes simply don’t exist here. All of the coaches and other members are positive, supportive, and always ready to cheer you on when things get tough. Less
I'm biased since I coach here so take this as you will. I've known Tony and Mira now for a few years and was never disciplined about my strength training for Jiu-Jitsu. This place has helped me grow and is a large part of the reason I was able to get to the brown belt level. If you want community and a chill vibe along with good structure, this is the place for you.
Tony was a great host and the place accommodated all of our needs.
Great facility and wonderful instructors. Highly recommended!

No note, no warning, nothing. Just towed. It was parked where there are no signs, nor painted markings to show that parking your car here is not allowed. When I approached gym management to discuss the manner and find out where my car is. They said "That it was towed and they didn't feel they needed to warn people". They said " I should know better than park in front of their driveway". But in this area of Portland, there are other businesses that allow you to park in front their driveways because they aren't being used. Impact Jiu Jitsu, I thought, was another one of these cases. Because there are also spaces that also have signs that explicitly say "Do not park here" In ISG's case, they don't have a sign nor do they warn you ahead of time. So $280 later and lots of stress to find my car. I know not to park there. My suggestion is if you work or travel in this area, do not park in front of their business because they may have you towed too and not give a damn about doing it. PS. I was thinking was thinking joining this gym but that no longer is a consideration. Less

I have been to gyms that are "clickish" which can be a big turn off to new members. While all groups are very close, they are accepting and friendly towards new students. I have taken a couple Jiu Jitsu classes have really gotten in to the kickboxing over the past 6th months. Kickboxing Instructor Andrew Wright from MMA gym Team Quest is very patient and as a competitor knows his material. I can say the same for the Jiu Jitsu class taught by black belt Tony Gracia and the Olympic weightlifting class taught by Mira Kwon. Excellent Equipment: I feel spoiled by the quality and quantity of equipment at Industrial Strength. Everything is orderly and easy to find. The gym, bathrooms and shower are clean and all the little details accounted for (extra hair ties in the bathrooms). Culture and Community: I love that during class, everyone cheers for each other. I have been going to Industrial Strength Gym since they opened back in 2013, and I think that is a testament to the kind of gym they are, and environment they cultivate! When I first started training at Industrial Strength, I was a complete novice. I was looking to learn about strength training and develop a sustainable exercise routine to help me stay healthy long term. I initially started with personal training, and was nervous about joining classes because I felt like I wouldn’t be strong or competent enough. Once I started taking classes, though, my fears quickly went away. The programming at Industrial Strength is accessible to people at all phases of their fitness journey, and tailored to suit different experience levels. The owners and coaches are nothing short of amazing. Not only do they all have extensive expertise in the field, they are also skilled at being able to teach others in a way that they can understand and apply. The atmosphere is very supportive and positive, and both the coaches and students in the classes constantly encourage each other to work hard and continue to make progress toward their goals. 10 years after I started at Industrial Strength, I still go 5 times/week, and enjoy their kettlebell and Strength & Conditioning classes.
