As I’ve told Sondra, aside from having my children, this was the single most empowering experience of my 58 years. So what motivates a grandma to do this? My story is fairly simple. A year ago while battling a number of physical challenges including long Covid, I felt about as broken and weak as I ever had. My photo shoot was intended to celebrate one year of working like hell to build strength and wellness in my mind and body. I had also embraced my reality by stopping putting artificial color over my natural salt and pepper hair. Of course this felt like a fabulous idea six months out. As the date approached, I began to doubt the wisdom of the whole thing! Truth is, the closest thing I’d done to this before was a couple of Polaroids that my hubby took of me when we were still in our 20s. Plus, I still needed to lose 20-30 pounds before I was at my eventual goal. I strongly considered postponing or canceling. But I believe the universe sends us the messages we need when we need them. I happened to be in Florence, Italy the week before my photo shoot. Walking through the Uffizi Gallery, I was mesmerized by the Renaissance art and the REAL women’s bodies portrayed so beautifully in the artwork. When I came across a sculpture of Aphrodite from the 1st century A.D., I was stopped in my tracks. This symbolic pinnacle of beauty had tummy rolls, a real booty, and possibly even some cellulite. In her presence, I found absolute peace with my decision. As for the actual experience of the photo shoot, it was bliss. I have never had my hair and makeup done professionally, not even for my wedding. Sondra went through my suitcase of stuff and quickly narrowed it down to a perfect assortment. She guided me through various poses and encouraged me to try different things, all while making me feel completely safe and completely in control. We talked and laughed and she listened to my story and shared her own. It was truly fun. With Sondra’s gentle guidance, I felt feminine, confident, sexy, and strong. And so I’ll be forever grateful for these photos. Photos that were ultimately just for me, to celebrate this very personal milestone. My hubby does love the photos, which is nice, but really was not the point for me. So anyway, thanks for listening to my story.
