While recently running the trails in Folsom, California I began to experience some very familiar and relentless knee pain after a few miles into my run. It was definitely an unwelcome pain which has been pursuing me for several years. Past evaluations by my Orthopedic surgeon revealed a weak meniscus with the probability of a tear, and was informed this type of injury “would eventually require surgery.” As an avid runner, I am always looking for alternatives that will prevent injuries and above all prevent surgery from sidelining one for several weeks or even months. I heard about Dr. Rich though a family member and decided it was time to take the 416-mile trek for an evaluation. It was worth every mile on the Grapevine and the rush hour traffic on the 101 to see Dr. Rich, and I would gladly repeat the process for a follow-up visit. Dr. Rich reviewed by concerns and was able to pinpoint the root cause of my knee pain by methodically evaluating my range of motion, reflexes and specific areas of concern which proved to be the root cause of my intermittent and severe knee pain. Dr. Rich prescribed some simple but effective exercises, and made recommendations for a progressive treatment plan which included strength training and concentrating on specific areas to improve the overall quality of my knee and even my running goals! This can be career ending for any athlete. Seeing Rich made me identify muscular imbalances in places I never expected. Which is a clear explanation of my pain and acute injury. I learned exercises that activate specific muscle groups within my lower body which in return strengthen my overall power. The trick is to finding a way to activate these muscle groups that were once stagnant by performing specific body movements which will inevitably improve the overall strength. We would tweak a movement such as a single leg lift a few millimeters and the exercise would turn from easy to extremely difficult. This was because my body would be using dominant muscle groups to perform the movement. Rich noticing the imbalances in my specific body moved the leg a few millimeters and I would now be working on the muscle that is extremely weak. This is where my dominant muscle groups could not compensate for the difficult movement and the weaker muscle was activated. "In my case my sartorius".
