I suffered a herniated disc in my low back in 2020 that kept me from being active. I was told by physical therapists, chiropractors, and sports medicine physicians to avoid loading the injured area because it would aggravate the tissues. I followed that advice, but instead of improving, my symptoms only got worse.Eventually, follow-up MRIs showed that the herniated disc had healed and my tissues were healthy, yet I was still dealing with significant pain and discomfort. That led me to a different conclusion: maybe the problem wasn’t that my back was too damaged to load, it was that it had become too weak. So I started progressively and intentionally strengthening it. Most of my pain disappeared, but I would still have flare-ups where my back would tighten and lock up, especially during heavy lifting or high-volume hinging workouts.Then I started working with Mac.Mac helped me understand that my nervous system had become hypervigilant after my injury. Even though my tissues had healed, my brain still perceived certain movements as threatening and would essentially “slam on the brakes” to protect me. It was like my back had PTSD from the original injury. That explanation finally made sense because it matched what the imaging was showing: healthy tissues, but an overprotective nervous system.I’ve been seeing Mac for dry needling and physical therapy for the last three months, and the results have been incredible. I am the closest I’ve been to 100% since 2020. My back is handling heavy weights and high-volume hinging with ease, and instead of constantly being limited by pain, my performance is improving again.If you’re dealing with persistent pain that doesn’t seem to match what your imaging says, I can’t recommend Mac enough. Mac is THE MAN! I went to him about 2 months ago for the first time with some shoulder (torn labrum) and knee pain (meniscus) issues and recently my elbow. And I wish I could stand here and say dry needling, cupping, scraping that he does doesn’t work but my body has never felt better. If you’re looking for progress head on over to Mac!
