Five Points Academy

I’ve been a member of Five Points Academy for five years, and it’s easily one of the best decisions I’ve made since moving to New York. One of the things that originally attracted me was the number of early and varied class times, which made it easy to fit training around a changing schedule. Five years later, I still love the structure and variety of the classes. Throughout the day and week, there’s a great mix of bag work, pads, sparring drills, dedicated clinch classes, and conditioning, so training never feels repetitive. The coaching staff is one of the things that really sets Five Points apart. There are women coaches, all with fight experience, and every coach brings their own style, expertise, and teaching perspective. There’s also an incredible range of generations and experience among the coaches. Some have decades of martial arts experience and are approaching 60, bringing an enormous amount of wisdom, technical knowledge, and perspective to their coaching. At the same time, there are younger coaches who bring fresh energy, different approaches, and their own competitive experience. Having that combination of experience and fresh perspective is a huge benefit. The coaching expertise is excellent across the board. The coaches have a tremendous amount of real-world fight experience, with numerous fights under their belts, extensive cornering experience, and regular travel both interstate and internationally with fighters for competitions. Having coaches who understand not only how to train you for a fight but also what happens in the corner and on fight day is invaluable. The regular presence of a resident Thai trainer is another thing that makes Five Points special and, in my experience, quite uncommon in NYC.There’s also a great range of experience among the students, from complete beginners to experienced and retired fighters who are still very much part of the community and culture of the gym. There are plenty of opportunities for anyone interested in competing as an amateur, while dedicated fighters have a strong environment to train in when preparing for competition. The facilities are another huge plus. The space is very large and split-level, with a dedicated weights room, treadmills, rowers, ellipticals, and weight machines. The Muay Thai area has a ring, around 20 bags of different varieties, and plenty of room for sparring and open mat. The space is also used for clinch, Judo, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, and Kali classes. There’s an additional area for kettlebell and mobility classes, which is also great for skipping, stretching, or extra conditioning. The gym is exceptionally well maintained. There are showers and lockers in the changing rooms, and full-time cleaning staff keep the facilities clean, including cleaning after every class. But probably what I value most is the community. There’s a great mix of experience levels, and the regulars are genuinely supportive of newer students. People are happy to help with technique, hold pads, or get in rounds with you if you’re preparing for a fight. It creates an environment where you can train seriously, challenge yourself, and improve without feeling intimidated. After five years, I still look forward to training here. Whether you’re completely new to Muay Thai, looking to get in shape, or preparing to compete, Five Points has the facilities, coaching, experience, and community to support you. I consistently leave class smiling. Highly recommend.
