The owners and instructor team here are very good with helping children develop the many skills in KSW martial arts, are patient, encouraging, and hold them to an appropriate standard to help them grow. We know she is in good hands during classes and training. The school has the feeling of being a big family. I recently decided I wanted to fulfill a longtime interest and learn martial arts. Once I made the decision I was left with the harrowing task of deciding which dojo I wanted to entrust my body to. While researching all the various local dojos I came across Kuk Sool Won, and began to do extensive research on the school and Korean martial arts as a whole. The website had tons of great info about the school and the system and I was intrigued, but I noticed the site did not mention belt testing fees, which I had only recently learned about during my research on dojos. So I decided to call the location to get the information that way I could have all the relevant information I, as a potential paying customer, would need. The phone was answered by the school owner, who I was already familiar with since I had spent so much time on their website the last couple of days. When I informed Brenda I was calling to inquire if the dojo had belt testing fees, and instead of a direct answer I was met with a cold… “umm who are you?” I informed Brenda that I was a local who has decided to take up martial arts and I’ve narrowed it down to a couple of dojos and I’m just calling to see if there’s any testing fees for belt exams, because that would help me in deciding where I want to invest my time and money. When I informed the school owner of this, she essentially informed me that she isn’t going to go into the fees regarding belt exams with just anybody. I advise all potential customers to do your due diligence to avoid hidden fees and predatory business practices like this. It’s unfortunate that this came from the school owner, however if this is the decorum and attitude of the dojo owner, then I do not want to learn anything from her, and it really puts a sour taste in my mouth for the whole system. Very unfortunate. Less
Very happy with Kuk So Won of Oak Hill for our child. They care about the kids, teach values, have lots of patience with high expectations. Love them!

We have seen a growth in her maturity and confidence in just a short amount of time. Leanna participated in the annual tournament last week and was nervous before it started (tears and all). We reassured her that tournament is meant to be fun and if anything, go support your friends and show up to be their partner, even if you don’t end up competing. Seeing all her friends be there encouraged her and she was ready to go! She came home with a few medals but most of all learned a lesson in positive self-talk. I asked her how she was able to calm herself when she felt nervous while waiting to be called, she said: “My brain said, Calm down, Leanna. Calm down, Leanna. And I listened to my brain.” Less

Started taking my son here about 5 months ago and can’t say enough nice things. As mentioned by others the sense of community is unlike anything we’ve found. The compassion of the teachers is also fantastic, and it’s very evident the owners and instructors love what they do. During testing my son started tearing up because he could not break a board and Tim went way above and beyond to talk him through it and turn it into a positive learning experience with a hug at the end. All of this has turned something he would normally shy away from into one of his favorite activities. Looking forward to a long journey with you guys! Less
Love this place!!!! My son loves it more than any martial art class we have tried
Great group of instructors and martial artists! If you are looking for a traditional martial art in the Austin area, look no further!
Great Taekwondo school for adults and children. Highly recommend!
The instruction at KSW of Oak Hill has really helped my daughter with her self confidence and her perseverance! The teachers keep the classes fun and focused on skill acquisition, without making the experience too high-pressure. My kiddo loves her classes and her instructors!

My son tried a class during summer and loved it and now he’s a student of this school, the benefits of this traditional martial arts had brought him are priceless, we wanted something that he could enjoy as well as to learn patience, self-defense and skills. The instructors and owners are amazing and have a great sense of community.

This review is long overdue! My son started in the summer in the tiny tigers class. We were looking for something to help my son gain discipline and self confidence as well as gain strength. This has not only met our expectations, it has far surpassed what we were looking for. We initially started with the intro month to make sure he was really interested in doing martial arts before investing in the full classes (which I think it a great way to see if it’s a good fit!). We also really loved the Covid safety protocols they have in place to ensure they keep their staff and the students safe during this crazy time. He has had so much fun but also learned so much (they are also big on manners and respect which I love). He has gained focus and I can see his self confidence building. We went to tournament in October and he won medals in events and the amount of pride in himself was so amazing to see. The most amazing thing about Kuk Sool Won of Oak Hill is the feeling of community. The parents are so involved and supportive and the instructors are amazing (here’s looking at you Caroline!) Barbara is so encouraging and the level of open communication is so appreciated for a helicopter parent like myself haha. If you’re thinking about a place to take your child (or even yourself) for martial arts, please give this school a try. You will not be disappointed. We can’t wait to see our son develop and grow as he learns more and moves up in rank. Less
This review is for the womens self defense course my daughter attended on 7/25/21. She learned so much important information and techniques that she said were easy to absorb and retain. They have her focusing on listening, respectful manners, calming their body to await instruction, formal Korean martial arts etiquette, along with what I imagine is standard martial arts physical fitness and coordination. While we could have chosen a more physically active and moving sport, I feel like this school will be a phenomenal foundation for her future no matter her choices in extra curricular activities. Sa Bum Nim Barbara, owner and instructor, is one of the most considerate, generous and caring people I’ve ever met. Your child will be well cared for while being held to the most highest of standards here!! The assistant instructors are also incredibly patient and talented at teaching the youngsters! Last, but not least, the school’s response to COVID-19 has been incredibly appropriate with limited students training at a distance in the school and training outside and at the park all while wearing masks. The school owners + staff are incredibly welcoming, kind, patient, encouraging and supportive. There is a solid sense of community/family at the school, from staff to students and families. The biggest impact we’ve seen to our daughter is a major boost in her confidence and courage; while it’s an excellent physical workout, the kids are also taught respect, control and responsibility. While we were sad to step away from in-person classes at the school during COVID-19, the owners did a remarkable job at pivoting to Zoom classes in the interim, and happily the kids are back to outdoor classes at the school (and park) again now. I've been very impressed with the professionalism and dedication of the owners Tim and Barbara in how they've set up the Zoom online experience for the small children. It is very hard to engage 3-6 year olds, but the staff has been very creative and organized from the start! My boys tested for their first belt stripe over Zoom in the summer and passed with flying colors. They have grown so much with Kuk Sool and earned more belt stripes since. Fast forward to the present, we decided to make it a family affair. My spouse and I joined Kuk Sool as well! I've only been to a handful of adult classes so far, but I'm thoroughly enjoying it. Before introductions (which actually never happened) the owner verbally disciplined my son for picking up and throwing rocks because it was near her windows. I was ok with that. Probably a poor choice to place a landscape of rocks though right? It got weird when she got onto my 5 year old son AGAIN outside her business for jumping up and down while holding onto the metal bench next to the window. His feet were on the ground. At this point, she still has not introduced herself to me. Just been weird twice. Almost harassing a 5 year old acting like a five year old from my perspective. To go on about the weirdness, the second in charge led us (day 1) into an office full of "stuff". I had my 2 year old also. I'm juggling. They acted surprised and were super agitated when my son touched the flag on the desk. Didn't pick it up, just touched it. Talked to my son rudely in my opinion. I was still kinda taking it in but I had my doubts about a match at this point. On the positive, the children instructors they have were nice, punctual, professional and seemed to work with our son very well. He definitely enjoyed the classes. Told me so. We had a few practices prior to the owner telling us it was not a good fit for them and we should check back in 6 months. Surprising but maybe a blessing. I think this place probably is able to take only cream of the crop. Good for them. I'm happy about the trial period. I had never heard of Kuk Sool Won. This placed seemed to have a lot going for it. The short experience was an eye opener. The owner never introduced herself which seems contrary to their formal respect "dance" and yet she was the one that gave the final "no go" to my wife. She said it was a team decision. After reading the other reviews, it seems to be a mixed bag. Nothing wrong with a trial period though. I say go for it if you are interested. Less

He is small for his age, and like many 5 year olds, takes some time to warm up to new environments. We signed up for a trial month period, but were never told that this was a "try-out". The month trial was for 8 classes, and we were told after attending only 3 that he wasn't "ready". Anyone that knows him will tell you he is the most gentle, sweet, eager to please kid, so I can't help but think the reason we were told he isn't "ready" is because he is small and less coordinated than his peers. I had been wanting to get back to some type of martial art and figured if Willie Nelson can do it, so can I. I looked at tai chi, kung fu, judo, tai kwon do and jiu-jitsu. Kuk Sool Won has all the elements. Kicking, punching, throwing, pressure points, traditional weapons, discipline....you know, stuff that might come in handy when you wander into the wrong place. I can't bend like I used to, don't have the stamina of a 20 year old, have had back issues most of my life, all kinds of reasons NOT to want to push beyond being comfortable. But what fun is that? I ALWAYS feel healthier, more clear headed, and just plain happy during and after class. I forget how big I seem to most people, 6'2" 235 lbs, so when I'm paired with a 100 lb, 14 year old girl.... just to see those eyes go wide is worth the price of admission. Kuk Sool is great for emphasizing that variety. It makes you think. Getting back to Kuk Sool may be the singular best thing I've done for myself in many years. The classes are always fun. Some are physically intense, but that's what we are here for, right? My one complaint: I waited 25 years too long to get back to Kuk Sool. Fun fact: PKJN was often my work out partner way back when he was only a brown belt. Less

Our family has had such a great experience at Kuk Sool. The staff is amazing and the owners are really hands on, not only teaching but forming relationships with their students. We have two kids here, 9 and 7, and will continue here for many years as it really has been a great self discovery and confidence builder for both of them. Highly recommend! ,
Being in the school for almost two years. We don`t have enough good things to say about this amazing school! It`s not just a school, it`s a loving community that would become an important part of your life.
#1 school representing at World Kuk Sool World Championship Tournament. Great instructors and students. Proud to be part of their Kuk Sool family.
Highly recommend! Martial Art is a training for life by all means. Ever since my son Arin joined the class he is going through a transformation. He is becoming confident. As we have moved from a different country very recently Arin needed this opportunity to make his transition smoother. The instructors are wonderful teachers and human beings as well. That makes it so special.
I cannot recommend the women’s self defense class enough! It gave me confidence I didn’t know how badly I needed!! I’m returning with my college-age daughter for the next one, and am planning to enroll my youngest and myself in their martial arts classes. Great location, great staff. Can’t wait to go back!!!

Tim and Barbara King, as well as all of the instructors run an intensive yet very nurturing program. We appreciate the focus that this school keeps on the traditional standards of Kuk Sool Won, and the discipline that results from it with our young students. To put it simply, you truly earn your belts and stripes in this program, and the results show in the travel tournaments. Lastly, we feel completely comfortable dropping off our kids without our supervision at their classes, as all of the instructors promote safety and security above all else. Five stars for sure! Less

I first came to Kuk Sool won of Oak Hill in the summer of 2014. I was here with my (then boyfriend) husband for a summer internship, and was excited to try out this new (to me) school for the summer. I had been training in the same arts in Illinois since 2009, but at a University Club setting. The first thing that struck me about this brick-and-mortar (versus campus gym) school was how impressive it looked. I could tell the owners and instructors had put a LOT of thought and work into configuring an excellent dojang for training their students in. Next, (after walking in) I was introduced to Kuk Sool Won members of all ranks who I had never met, but I was immediately treated as a member of their family. It didn't matter that I had come from a (very) small school from states away - I was a black belt who had spent years training in the same martial arts as them, and I had put the same amount of effort into my rank. It felt like I was returning home. The next year my husband and I returned to Austin (and me to KSW of Oak Hill) for good, and it's been such a joy. The instructors are so responsive to your needs as their student, and they spend a lot of effort to make sure their attention is properly differentiated to each person's needs. These instructors have challenged me to become better than I could have ever been on my own (and darn it, PKJN Tim King is still pushing us! ;) ). But really, they know that there is always room for improvement, and they will listen to what you need from them. Whether it's more encouragement to jump on those advanced kicks, or to take the time you need and breathe when you are having trouble, these instructors have our backs all the way. I can hardly wait until my son (currently 1 year) is old enough to enroll in their Tiny Tiger program! Less
My high-school age son has been taking lessons here for several years. It is a fun and friendly school where they stress physical fitness and mutual respect. It has been a great experience for him.

After my daughter asked about learning a martial art, I asked my friends for recommendations. One of my neighbors told me that they send their kids to Kuk Sool Won (KSW), and I'm so happy that they introduced us to this school. When we first inquired about joining the school, we were asked to watch one class in order to familiarize ourselves with what my daughter would be joining. We were also told that she could then try KSW for a week - no commitments for free. After watching, both my son and I also decided to enroll in the week trial because the challenges we saw excited us. KSW is more than simply kicking and punching. There's physical fitness, coordination, balance, falling (safely), breathing, grappling and much more especially as one rises through the ranks. During our week, we tried a variety of class times and days so that we could determine which classes worked best with our schedules. I was also curious if my kids would gravitate to any specific instructors. They didn't. I have to credit Tim and Barbara with putting together a wonderful team of instructors. I found all of the instructors kind, patient, and very knowledgable. Additionally they are easily approachable when we have questions - neither of my kids hesitates to ask. Long story short, all three of us have been members for over a year now. My recommendation: stop reading and come try it out. KSW Oak Hill are wonderful with kids, and give it a try yourself too - you may find yourself surprised at what you can do! Less

My son (10) and daughter (8) have been at Kuk Sool Won of Oak Hill for about a year now. We love it! I personally enjoy watching them learn so many new things and seeing them gain better control over their bodies as well as their growth in understanding that things that are of any worth require hard work and practice. I also very much appreciate that over the course of a week they will usually be exposed to at least two and often three different instructors-- all of whom are at least 2nd degree black belts in this discipline. Each instructor has a different strength, which I feel helps give my kids a well rounded experience at the school. I have also appreciated that the instructors are not just handing out belts to kids because they pay and show up. I have sat through almost every single class my kids have attended. I have seen that there are some children who do not pay attention or who act up in class repeatedly. These kids regularly have to wait longer between belt tests than the kids who are paying attention and showing respect to one another and to the instructors. I believe that this is as it should be. Belt levels should not go up if the person does not know the material and/or if the person is not respecting the art, his or her fellow students, and his or her instructors. Having said this, I do appreciate the patience and understanding the instructors show for children who are younger and who simply have not yet quite developed the coordination or focus of the older kids. I feel that they have adjusted their expectations of the younger kids to fit with what is developmentally appropriate. So, thank you, Kuk Sool Won, for your excellent instruction for my kids! Also, I just have to say that the facilities are great. They vacuum every single day and keep that place clean. Also, after every single class they encourage the kids to either wash or sanitize their hands. With as many icky things as kids pass around to each other, I sincerely appreciate KSW's encouragement of good hygiene. Thanks! Less

After the 30-days trial and impressed by what we saw, we decided to enroll our three kids in a one-year program at KSW of Oak Hill. Every week our kids attended three to four practice sessions and they were always looking forward to the next classes. The instructors at the school are very good at teaching kids martial arts techniques. They know how to explain and demonstrate the martial arts moves and concepts in the manners that are easy for kids to understand. Our three kids have enjoyed the whole martial arts experience since they started at KSW of Oak Hill in June. Thanks to the dedication of the diligent staff, our kids were well-prepared for their participation in the 2014 Kuk Sool Won World Championship Tournament that was held on October 11th, 2014 at the Merrell Center in Katy, Texas. Because of all the advice, training, and preparation that our three kids received before the Tournament, they were be able to win 5 Gold + 3 Silver Medals for their school. Needless to say our three kids were thrilled to attain these medals in the first martial arts tournament they ever participated in! We highly recommend KSW of Oak Hill; it is a wonderful place for your kids to learn martial arts and thrive in a safe and fun environment! Less
My son has been going to KSW since January 2014 and it's been a great experience. He's moving up the ranks and very proud of himself as we are also! The winning formula for us has been the flexible schedule, the committed instructors and the flat fee structure. Looking forward to his first tournament this October!

My 18 year old son has been attending KSW since he was 7 years old, and even though he battled leukemia from ages 11-14, the entire staff supported him through it, and welcomed him back like he was family. Attending KSW always helped so much with his strength, stamina, concentration, attention, and most importantly his CONFIDENCE - but it also helped him after all his cancer treatments, (including a bone marrow transplant) to recover from the grueling effects on his body and spirit. My 11 year old daughter began classes not too long ago, and we have already seen the same positive effects on her. They also prepare the kids very well for the (optional ,but encouraged) annual tournament in Houston. Did I mention they also have camps, and organize fun events like holiday suppers, and outside fun trips? I highly recommend! Less

What I love about the school at Oak Hill are many things including that it is traditional in nature; the owner, Tim King, as well as all of the instructors, have an incredible gift at working with the children and being aware and knowledgeable of the different ages and what they are capable of; and yet at the same time demanding from them the best that they can do always; I also love that it is like being a part of a family, and all that work there are very respectful towards and caring for not only the students but all of the family members as well. My son truly enjoys going because it is a place he has formed good friendships, he has fun, and he knows that he is loved and cared about - it is a good place.
