I have to say this about Master T @ USSD because I am still just so beyond impressed.I randomly ended up at a church kids event and saw him doing ASL interpreting and I’m not kidding, I literally moved across the church just to sit closer and watch. I was in complete awe.I grew up with my mom as an interpreter, so I KNOW what I’m looking at and his skill is on another level.So of course I went up to him after like “okay that was incredible.” EXTREMELY SKILLEDSomehow in conversation he mentions he has a martial arts studio in Oceanside and I just kind of paused like God what?Because I had JUST been talking about finding something like this for my son.So we signed up.And I’m telling you right now this is not just another class. Not only is he a top Tier ASL Interpreter he is truly a master at his skills!I have sat there and watched him run a full room of kids—20+—all over the place, all different personalities, all different needs… and somehow he keeps them engaged, respectful, and still connects with each one individually.It’s honestly amazing to watch. Like some magical supernatural superpower!And for my parents who get it kids with energy, ADHD, autism, sensory disorders this is where I was really watching closely.Because my child is full speed, no brakes all days,And somehow… it brings tears to my eyes to see how this is making a huge impact and difference in our lives!Like really trying.He wants to listen.He wants to do better.He wants to earn that respect from Master T and Sensei Elias.That right there means everything to me.Because it’s not just kicks and punches.It’s discipline.It’s self-control.It’s focus.It’s respect.CharacterSincerityEffortEtiquette and so much more!It’s absolutely stunning to watch real life lessons being intertwined into these kids lives!I’m just sitting there half the time like… how are you doing this with this many kids??It’s impressive. It’s consistent. And you can tell he genuinely cares.I am just so glad we found this place.This is one of those things you don’t realize you needed until you see it.

USSD continues to surpass all of our expectations. Our soon to be 4 year old just started a few weeks ago and after shopping around to different studios, we couldn’t be happier. It takes a very special set of skills and patience to be able to work with really young kids, and (as a former 1st grade teacher) I can honestly say they set the new standard. Everyone there is super welcoming and focused on developing the character of our boy just as much as his skills.

My son started Karate with Master T about 18 months ago when he was 5 years old and he has made huge changes over that time. Karate has been excellent for his focus. He listens, looks, learns, and has developed a great sense of leadership. His leadership abilities have transferred into his Kindergarten class at school and his Sabbath School class. He loves to lead out at school and lead out at Sabbath School and all of the kids listen to him and respect him. It's amazing. He went from very shy to very confident! Karate has taught him discipline and Master T has been a huge blessing. The kids love him, but more importantly they respect him as well.

My son started karate lessons about 6 months ago and his experience here has been fantastic, so much so that I decided to start lessons myself. My goals have been to increase my physical fitness and improve my balance and coordination. As an adult I really appreciate Master Terrell and Sensei Garrett. Both of them are knowledgeable and passionate about martial arts and patient as well. My group class includes black belts and novices and they're able to tailor lessons to the range of skill levels in my class. My small group class is excellent and I've progressed so much from their 1:1 instruction. I really recommend USSD for adults and children, alike.

Both my boys have been going to karate here and they love it! As a matter of fact, WE all love it. My husband and I decided to try the Adult class, and it's one of the things we look forward to each week. It's a good workout and Master Terrell is such a great instructor (he has a great team of instructors too!). On somedays before class, I feel too tired to go after a long day of work, but I go anyway, and I always walk out of there feeling re-energized, empowered, and just....alive!!! I am SO glad we took the leap into self-defense at USSD Oceanside!

We have only been at OSSD a short time but have been welcomed with the utmost care and respect. My son has special needs and has struggled with every group sport/activity he's tried. This was an entirely different experience - the happiest I have ever seen him! The instructors are kind but firm, hold the students to high standards but are thoughtful in their expectations. My son is learning martial arts, yes, but it also gaining valuable life skills like patience, confidence and most importantly, focus. I am truly impressed and feel lucky we found such a wonderful studio!

Our 14 year old daughter has been at USSD for 3 years now. She has grown tremendously in those years. Master T is an amazing instructor, especially with kids that might be a little “different” like our daughter. He has a great sense of when to challenge her (even if we didn’t think she was ready) and when to offer the extra support or accommodations she might need. She has met or exceeded our expectations and it has truly been awesome to see her confidence grow as she has earned medals in tournaments and belts up!

A great place for newcomers to Shaolin Kenpo, kiddos and adults alike! I worked with Master Terrell and Sensai Garrett for 6 months. I placed 3rd in Forms at my first tournament and advanced to yellow belt shortly afterwards. My only regret is not extending my membership another month to get the most out of my final weeks in California.

Master Terrell and his mentors are amazing with the kids. They have such patience, great attention to detail, and overall really good teachers. We used to bring my 4yr old here in 2021 and had such a great experience. We took a break, but now we’re back with both of our kiddos and we are so glad we came back HERE. My son wanted to try juijitsu and kung fu before coming back to karate, but our experience at USSD superseded our impressions of the (trial weeks) other dojos.

USSD Oceanside has been amazing for my family. Our Son started there about 7 years ago and went from an awkward 9 almost 10 year old to a very confident 16 year old 1st degree brown belt/ red belt instructor. Now both of my daughters are in it and thriving as well!

USSD has been extremely beneficial for my children. My children have more confidence in themselves, higher self esteem, and learning to become great leaders. My son has learned to be more outspoken, and to speak with confidence. My daughter has taken the leadership skills she has learned and applies them to all aspects of her life. The instructors are amazing teachers and very patient with each individual child and their needs. Master Terrell is easy to work with and helpful with scheduling changes. My husband and I were students, and the adult lessons were great! We learned so much and the lessons we learned will stay with us forever. Master Terrell, again is excellent at catering to your individual health and physical needs. He worked with us to learn our forms, without harming or injuring ourselves. A great workout, while learning beneficial skills. I highly recommend USSD for children and adults.

My daughter has now been in 3 tournaments since joining. She has received 4 medals in all. It has changed her self esteem incredibly. Since joining she has made a 180*. She nom is getting a 3.3 gpa where before she struggled meeting grade level. She always thought she was less than because of struggles in school.After the first tournament she told me that she now knew she could accomplish things. Home life has been a struggle but, slowly getting better because at 11 they already act like teenagers. All the highschoolers that attend are so responsible and respectful. Most are high in belt rank and you can see how they have matured well with Master T”s influence. Master T is always there for parent support. Try this dojo with no worry of regrets.
