In January 2024 I walked through the doors at Iron Lion for the first time. It had been a journey back to CrossFit for me, having had 4 babies in 10 years. I'd loved the methodology and had been lucky to train in lots of gyms across Australia while travelling pre-kids. About 18 months ago I committed to improving my fitness and well-being, after years of inconsistency and 'falling off the wagon'. Blair, Luke and Jill were welcoming from the start, providing scaling options where I needed them and helping me to settle in. They offered extra education and support around nutrition, recovery and self care. I was nervous, but was welcomed so warmly by others and felt at home within the first few sessions. Over time, I've realised that I've found a sense of community I didn't realise I was craving. I've finally built some consistency in my training after struggling to for a decade, and am enjoying feeling fitter, stronger and faster every day. I really can't thank the coaches and crew at Iron Lion enough, as walking through the door has absolutely changed my life for the better.

A Year at IronLion – And What a TransformationHere we are — my one-year anniversary at IronLion CrossFit — and what a journey it’s been. Just over twelve months ago, I started noticing some rather unwelcome changes in my physique: tuck shop lady wings (or as I affectionately call them, "bingo wings") were flapping into existence, I began making strange noises when bending down (purely from the mouth, just to be clear), and instead of shaking my booty, I felt like I was swinging what could only be described as a pair of droopy dumplings.Looking at photos of old school friends — all fellow mid-fifty-year-olds — it seemed this was just how things were meant to go. Except I didn’t fancy being part of that crowd.I ran but I was getting bored and it simply wasn’t enough. I didn’t want to hide away in saggy, shapeless clothes. I needed to tone up, and I needed help doing it properly.I’d tried gyms before, but let’s be honest — once you signed up, you were left to fend for yourself. Half the time I wasn’t even sure if I was using the equipment properly, and asking for help made me feel like I'd just interrupted a world summit. Most of the staff seemed far too busy cleaning the same patch of floor for the third time, or gazing blankly at a computer screen like it held the secrets of the universe.I needed something different. Somewhere that would see me, not just another membership fee walking through the door. So, I turned to trusty social media for some advice around Caloundra, and CrossFit at IronLion kept coming up. I decided to give it a go.From my first chat with Luke, one of the owners, I knew this place was different. I told him about my goals and mentioned a shoulder condition that, even after surgery, still limited my movement. Luke understood completely, which was reassuring.Next, I met Jill, one of the brilliant instructors, for a movement and posture analysis. I’ll be honest, I was shocked. I always thought I was fairly fit, but it turned out I was closer to a clapped-out old banger than a finely tuned machine. Still, rather than dwell on it, I decided age was not going to define me. Maybe I wasn’t going to be a Ferrari at 53, but a smart little Honda Civic seemed perfectly achievable. So the journey began.Yes, it was challenging. Yes, I was slow. Yes, sometimes my brain simply could not compute what my body was meant to do – BUT at least it wasn’t Zumba, god I HATE Zumba!!But I kept showing up.Week after week, month after month, small wins started adding up. Within a month, I managed the monkey bars again — something I hadn’t been able to do for five years. It might sound minor, but for me, it was a big deal. I want to be the grandmother swinging around with the grandkids, not sitting on the sidelines. Each visit, I learn something new. Each visit, I push myself a little further. There are movements and exercises I never thought I would be able to do again — push-ups, pull-ups, overhead weights. There’s still so much more I want to achieve.Blair, Luke and Jill have been brilliant throughout. They see you. They support you. They give you a nudge when you need it, and they genuinely care. They’ve created something different — a place where you feel part of something, not just a number.I’ll always be grateful that IronLion was recommended to me. There’s no space in my life anymore for tuck shop arms, the huff-and-puff shuffle or droopy dumplings.IronLion, thank you for helping me find my strength, my spark, and a ‘little work in progress Honda Civic’!!

As a new(ish) member at IronLion I have felt welcomed by knowledgeable/friendly trainers & nice/welcoming other members of the gym too! I would definitely recommend this crossfit gym to anyone either starting out new to crossfit, or anyone who lives and breathes crossfit already. They know how to create a challenging environment for all athletes & also how to create a gym climate that is positive & encouraging.

Crossfit Iron Lion is the place you didn't realise you needed in your life! You definitely don't need to be an elite athlete to join. I rejoined 4 years ago after a break but missed the people and it was the best decision! I always leave with my cup filled up. The coaching team are passionate about health and wellbeing and have so much knowledge and patience. I really try and achieve balance with getting fit, plenty of laughs and coffee too!
