Working with James has been the single biggest thing I have done to improve my health and athletic performance. With consistent small change over four months my energy levels improved, I recovered from training faster and felt all round healthier day to day. With his guidance I was also able to build my knowledge around healthy eating and nutrition in a way I can take with me for life. From an athletic point of view I learned the skills to manage my hydration and fueling for endurance races and trained my gut to take on food whilst running; the proof of improvement is in the numbers. In 2022 before working with James I did a 55km mountain ultra with an average speed of 12:56 mins per kilometer. In May 2024 I did a 45km mountain race at a speed of 9:02 mins per kilometer. Ultimately James was instrumental in achieving my racing goal and completing the 2023 Grossglockner Ultra Trail around the mountains of Austria. I’ve been a runner and triathlete for many years now but approaching 40 I decided to take on a series of ultra marathons as a bit of challenge, targeting a multi-day ultra next year. Having a busy life across work, training and socialising I’ve often struggled with my energy levels, feeling a bit flat during some sessions and like I’m not getting the most out of training. I decided to get in touch with James to discuss my lifestyle/routine and understand where I could make changes to get more out of my training. I found the process to be really positive and empowering. I have a pretty healthy diet but James helped me realise I’d gotten into some unhelpful habits with my nutrition, particularly around fuelling for my training and during longer sessions but also for my recovery. We also discussed some of my challenges with injuries and how I could aide my recovery through diet. I’m relatively short on time, so efficiency is important to me and James really helped me focus on the importance of preparation but also that good nutrition doesn’t need to be complicated or super time consuming. Over the past few months I’ve felt much more energised and like I am getting more out of my training. The changes I’ve made haven’t been super complicated or time consuming and I’ve really enjoyed all of the recipes and suggestions that James provided. I’ve now done my first couple of ultras and taking on James’ advice around hydration and nutrition, during the race I’ve felt good and had energy right through to the end. James was recommended to me by my Tri coach. I was struggling with my weight which became a vicious circle in my training and wellness journey. James didn’t start by telling me the do’s and don’ts of healthy eating. We first went through understanding where I was in my life: stresses, anxieties, ambitions, frustrations, injuries etc. and quickly learned that the stresses and anxieties were factors that were contributing to my inability to lose weight while training. We found techniques that I could follow to manage my stress including whilst I was injured. Then we got into really understanding my personal requirements for nutrition for energy. It was a revelation. After each session with James I would put into practice what we agreed. (It was great to have that level of accountability, I would never have done it on my own at that stage). The impact on my performance was incredible. (Note - I am not by any means an ‘elite’ athlete, just someone who enjoys activity and events. All I want to do is get round the course giving it my best). The impact on my body composition was heading in the right direction (James helped me in getting my head round weight vs body comp). With the nutrition advice I received from James (noting this was through really understanding me, my capabilities, perceived weaknesses, my sweat rate, my goals etc. etc.), I knew I could confidently get through the challenge during my training. Methodically following that process during my event means I now have the confidence to sign up to more events. Working with James was a real eye opener. I will follow his advice throughout my life and know as a result I will continue to be active and participate in events. Whatever journey you are on, whether you are an elite athlete or just like me, I could not recommend James and Nutrition for Energy highly enough to help you reach your goals. Less

My name is Michelle Ward, I live in Leicestershire and I'm a swim teacher/aqua aerobics instructor. I first contacted James on the 3 month accelerator to try and see if I could improve energy so that I could maybe complete my first Ultra. (knees dependant) I have tried other nutritionists in the past so I was sceptical but after our first meeting I knew I had to try and invest some time and money in myself to see if I could pull myself out of a slump I was in with fitness, energy and motivation after completing the channel relay last year. Well what can I say James had his work cut out with me as after the first consultation in the 3 month accelerator he identified a major issue with my eating and something I hadn't realised I was doing. We will come onto that in a minute but initially he helped me realise that I was not actually eating enough calories for my job and lifestyle. I was sceptical of eating more in my breakfast and lunches but had to put the faith into his knowledge. I loved that James came up with quick lunches that I could do and still keep good gut health. My first 'AHA' moment was on holiday (after two months), when for the first time in many years, if not my whole life, I felt strong running in the sun, felt lean and felt positive in my body. I carried on with James after the 3 month accelerator and to cut a long story short I completed a 50k ultra buzzing after only returning back to long distance running for 2 months due to knee issues. I then went on to complete a 100k in the Conti thunder run which was a technical off road looped event but sadly due to no running poles I had to retire in the evening as I would have fallen over in the dark as I'm clumsy. You might think 'I could do this without nutritional help' and maybe you can but to put into context I have done marathons and Ironmans and would have been totally spent after them and unable to do anything for several weeks after. I ran a couple of days after my 100k ultra (only 4/5 miles) but the shock was that I ran 15 miles one week after with energy to spare. My life has changed this year not only with food management but also sleep management and the word I hate to use 'self care'. This change was due to James spotting many issues only by talking to me in that first consultation. So the major issue spotted by James and I was too ashamed to admit till now is that I still have an eating disorder even after 30 years and hadn't realised it till James delicately used the word 'binge and restrict'. Have I cracked it yet, the answer would be no, but have I identified triggers with the help of James and managed to control it better, the answer is 'Yes' I look forward to working with James more in 2023 as I embark on a huge challenge for me mentally and physically which will need his expert help to complete. My advice to anyone who is thinking of using James would be to quote a Nike phrase.......JUST DO IT!! Less

I recently had a 1:1 with James, after attending a workshop he hosted. I am impressed with his knowledge, insight, but most importantly his explanations. James is helping me with my training with some Carb Periodisation work in preparation for an endurance event in the summer. I was inspired by his approach and knowledge and wanted to work with someone whose knowledge I can trust due to managing endocrine issues that effect my weight management and energy to power conversion. I’m an endurance cyclist and take part in mountain events. The training for these has been challenged due to my health. I’m looking to improve power to weight ratio, as well as on and off bike energy dips. I am already seeing improved energy during and post rides which is helping to motivate me further. My general diet was already very clean, however the changes James has suggested are already making a difference and make perfect sense. I’m looking forward to 2020’s training program to fully implement them. James is following up with me outside of our scheduled sessions to check on progress, I was really impressed by this. I used James for nutrition consultation / body consultation as have always done lots of training, but haven’t thought too much about nutrition. He’s approachable, informed and his approach is realistic and gets really positive outcomes. As a family, James also provided advice to my Son who had just moved to a vegan diet and we were concerned that he wasn't getting enough calories.James did a full audit of food intake and then helped provide decent ideas to ensure he gets a varied diet which has been a massive help. I approached James for advice on how to improve my diet and overall body aesthetic - something I feel I have struggled with for a while now. As a lady of older years, I will admit to being nervous of exposing flesh and being seen in my crop top snd shorts but James was incredibly professional and I was put at ease. He took time to explain results to me and followed it up with a written report with recommendations for maintaining/changing body composition. I’m looking forward to a reapeat analysis in March to review what a further 3 months of training does for my body composition, being mindful that I don’t lose more body fat which may composimise performance. He is incredibly thorough and specific when determining what your goals are.
