Wonderful place to stay. The hotel is clean and has a great atmosphere.
Felt like home.
Check in isn't until 4pm They lock the whole hotel at 930pm. Isn't this illegal??!?? And no telephone in the room? . Check out supposedly at 11am and yet someone trying to get into my room before 8am! Ridiculous....
History baby, beautiful hotel, very charming, wish I had a girlfriend. But I don’t, so I settled for ghosts. Great place gotta go.
First the good - The hotel is awesome, rooms comfortable and plenty of space. Feels like you’re stepping back in time with the wood finished and antique look. Cane through at 10pm, 2am, and 6am (give it take a few minutes), so if you’re expecting a sound sleep through the night, that’s a challenge. Second, the saloon/restaurant. Beautiful setup to sit and look at. Bar only has one brand of local liquor if you’re looking for a cocktail (New Mexico brand I believe is what they said). Menu is limited, and a little over-priced. We had the elk rolls as an appetizer which were outstanding. Wife had the pork chops which were fairly flavorful, but tough, and overpriced. I had the steak. Pretty bland, was reminiscent of a Bonanza or Golden Corral steak, and way overpriced. No salad or roll was served with either entree. Seating was limited, so it felt like our server was rushing us through the meal so they could seat another party, and keep the money train flowing. So, I’d stay at the hotel, if you can sleep through the train, and I’d eat elsewhere if given the choice, especially if you’re looking for a nice drink to kick back and relax with to complete your evening. A great find on our way from Ft Worth to Colorado! Very nice historical lobby and dining room from late 1800s. Furniture & pictures of the Era all tell a story of family and life back in the day. We stayed in a queen room that was rustic but met our needs for the night. Only thing is it is close to hwy 87 & can be somewhat noisy from traffic. Overall a nice stay.
Hotel Eklund is an absolute gem! The building is so beautiful with a very interesting history. The staff was wonderful, so friendly and helpful. The area felt super safe. I would absolutely recommend staying here to anyone, one of my all time favorite stays!
WOW, greeted by the charming Ms. Jo Beth who shared the history of the hotel and town, the room clean and bright western motif. Dinner was delightful, hostess Ms. Jeanette was very attentive along with the server Ms. Anne and the bartender Mr. Keith had a local distilled Rye whiskey to serve. A most wonderful experience on our bucket list. Thank all of you for making it special.
Lovely, historic hotel. The staff is very friendly and helpful, plus the rooms are clean and there’s plenty of hot water. Breakfast is included with your stay and is quite good. 10/10

We had the cheese enchilada plate with Christmas sauce foe dinner and they were superb. Bartender was friendly. You can only drink there if you have dinner reservations or are an overnight guest. There was even a band we enjoyed with our dinner. Drawbacks? The very savvy women that own/ run the place are a little uptight. The bartender told us to take our drinks upstairs to explore the ghostly 3rd floor. Within 5 minutes one of the owners zoomed up on the elevator and told us to lower our voices and come back downstairs. The rest of the evening my SO and I whispered in our room. It was a very cool place. A cool place that feels like you are visiting your grandparents. Respect the place and keep it down. Also doors lock for a 9 PM curfew. Less

The historic decor is a sight to see! High ceilings with large chandeliers in the sitting area hits just right! Bed was just the right firmness for my liking. The restaurant was not open the night I stayed, but the coffee in the morning was delicious. And I ❤️ me some coffee.
Wonderful small town, historic hotel.
Beautiful historic hotel
Nice historic hotel. This is a 125 year old hotel that has had some updates and upgrades but still has you feeling like you are back in time. Beds were comfy and rooms clean. Breakfast was great and we got to chat with the owner about the history of the place. Highly recommend!
Tried to have dinner here but they closed at 8 pm. Inquired about breakfast the following morning, and that is only for guests. So we just took pictures of the old hotel and I won't be writing a travel blog about this one.
Nice place to stay in this historic hotel. Good restaurant and service.
We had a great stay here. Stylish rooms. Nice breakfast. Loved the owners!

The hotel has an interesting history with gunfights, bullet holes, wild west criminals, etc. It was updated, but kept lots of the original architecture and gorgeous bar that was won in a poker game. The owner has a green thumb with plenty of beautiful potted plants around. The dining room has some of the original headboards as seat backs in the booths. There were lots of pretty stained glass, chandeliers, opulent ceiling medallions, and ornate staircases. Vonita provided just the best service, history lessons, cooking, happiness, and kindness. She turned on the lights in the bar so we could take pictures. She told us about the history of the hotel, showed us the various bullet holes, told us about the history of the area, and gave us directions to several tourist attractions. It was so refreshing to see a young person who's proud of where they live and work, and who is so enthusiastic and kind. Vonita got us ice for our cooler, both when we checked in and then when we checked out. Vonita, also, served the generous breakfast with homemade quiche, breakfast burrito, pastries, and fruit. We didn't try the pastries, but they looked wonderful. The room was decorated tastefully in Southwest style. The rooms were clean and satisfactory. We loved the English Pear hand soap. This historic hotel was a refreshing change from the chain hotels in most cities. Less
Passing through. Went to dinner. Food was 😑. It is more of a fun local place. The live music was great. Friendly people.
Great service great atmosphere great coffee shop across the street the restaurant is open Thursday Friday and Saturday if you don’t stay here you are missing out on a great experience.
It was fine but basic and lacked simple amenities. I’m not sure if it was a queen or full bed but the mattress was awful. No hair dryer or clothes iron. The TV only gets one channel. The breakfast (quiche) was delicious and was the best part of the stay. I would’ve given 1 or 2 stars if it weren’t for the quiche. Would not recommend unless last resort.
Friendly helpful and professional. It comes with a haunted room. Awesome!

We always like to stay here in Clayton. It is charming restored and easily recalls the majesty of an old western hotel.
What a wonderful historical space! The details and furnishings match the turn of the century architecture. The staff was personable and felt like family! Live music in the saloon while we ate dinner!
Very clean nice place to stay. I would stay there again!

The floors creek, the walls are thin, and, being located adjacent to a highway intersection and train tracks, you are not well insulated from their sounds. BUT, for me, they add to the experience. Our room (207) was full of modern amenities, and everything worked as it was supposed to. However, there is no fridge, no coffee maker, no microwave, and the TV was tiny. There is a balcony shared by the 4 front, 2nd level rooms, which was great except that the curtains didn't fully block anyone from seeing inside or room. I was instructed by the manager not to smoke "anything" on the balcony. No doubt in part because there is a cannabis dispensary 2 doors down. No problem, they have a lovely outdoor smoking area. There is a restaurant and a historic saloon on premises, but are only open on Friday and Saturday. They serve an enhanced continental breakfast to hotel guests every day, but the only low-carb thing available is a crustless quiche that is made to order. The breakfast room attendant is very knowledgeable about the history, professional, however, she could use some people skills. There is no coffee maker in the rooms, so we toddled down to the breakfast room with our cups where we were jumped on and scolded for bringing or own cups, and then treated like riff-raff. The attendant demanding to know our room number. The breakfast was unappealing, so we just left and got our breakfast on the road. Overall, we would definitely stay here again. Less

If you are looking for a traditional hotel, friendly staff and healthy meals. This is your hotel!
It was nice hotel overall. At first I didn't have high expectations but after I left I was honestly really impressed.
Great historical experience! 👍
Really cute historic hotel for a great price. The room was comfortable and clean. The hotel keeper was exceedingly kind and friendly. The breakfast was good, though keep in mind everything was pre-made and you pick what you want and heat it up in the microwave; excellent coffee.

Cool evening breeze on the balcony. Also a beautiful, shaded patio and seating with greenery adjacent to the main driveway entrance. Good service in the hand-carved woodwork old-school "saloon" for dinner. Old West artifacts abound. Check out the ornate lobby. Good sleep overnight to be ready for an all-day drive. The Eklund's location downtown a half-block off the main highway is ideal. Plenty of parking, we could see our car from our room. The owner Keith and his wife (did not get her name) cook up and serve the free breakfast. Had nice brief chat with Keith in the ornate breakfast room. Several items to choose from. We tried their crustless quiche with Hatch Chiles - excellent! They also provide fresh fruit, cereals, hot oatmeal, yogurt, breakfast tacos, etc. This locally-owned business (survived the cruel covid shut-downs) is not an ordinary, bland corporate chain! A nice finish to our trip to the cool mountains. Less
Had a lovely stay here. My son enjoyed playing on the old pianos. Staff was attentive and breakfast was tasty.
Un voyage dans le temps, le couplé de tenancier très sympathique
Lots of noise from the traffic. Wife loved the place.
Amazing old hotel, room was comfortable and clean, breakfast was included, no ghostly activity.
The hotel is super cool and the restaurant is super tasty! The staff was very helpful as well and gave us a full tour of the place. I will definitely be staying here again.
They are so friendly here!! Such a warm and welcoming atmosphere with so much history! The food was soooooo good! 10/10 would visit again and again!
Very cool! Friendly people. Joe was very nice & helpful. Loved our room. (King room w/ hot tub) Only negative is no coffee pot, microwave & fridge in room. Had to wait to get coffee until 6:30am 😩

My fiancee and I stayed next to it in 308 and, aside from some creaky floors, I can say that it was a unique and enjoyable experience that was free of anything supernatural. The decor simply cannot be beat, however. After all, how often are you able to stay in an old west saloon hotel, replete with saloon doors, the remnants of old gas lamps, and even leftover bullet holes?! Proprietor Keith was lovely to work with and as creepy as some of the decor can seem, he and his staff make it every bit a welcoming environment for a great stay! Less

The public spaces are nicely restored, but the rooms have almost no historical character -- just not very functional and ugly furniture containing the hotel's "E" monogram. There's a reading chair but no nearby lamp. There are no screens in the windows. The rooms are no better than a motel room, worse in some ways. The hotel provides a free breakfast for guests, but it was also disappointing. Everything but the coffee and oatmeal was refrigerator cold. If you wanted anything warm you had to put it in the microwave. They offer breakfast burritos, but all contain meat. Not everyone wants meat. Egg and potato burritos aren't unusual. The hotel's restaurant menu suggests it knows that it is likely to attract some vegetarians, but apparently that hasn't occurred to them for breakfast. Last, it's wrong to add a $4.20 credit card fee to a bill without informing the customer. Moreover, no place charging $105 and up for a room should charge a credit card fee. It's not like most of us walk around with that much cash. Less
Beautiful! A step back in time. The 2 lovely hostesses are incredibly bright, kind, personable and very hospitable. The breakfast is homemade, included in the stay and was delicious 😋. I know if ever traveling to or through New Mexico again The Eklund is my place. Loved, loved, loved it!
The lobby and bar are filled with good art, handmade jewelry, and rugs. Clean. The manager was so accommodating and patient. I ended up driving on to Colorado. Big mistake!!!. Should have stayed in Clayton. Drove straight into setting sun for hour and half. Nothing in Trinidad as cool as the Eklund.
What a great overnight stay! Absolutely love the feel and look of this hotel. The creeking floors only add to the nostalgia. It was like stepping back in time. Next time we will ask for room 307 to meet the ghost. 😉
Clean hotel, historic, and great breakfast
Authentic hotel
Service was quick and very helpful, good was excellent. Nice local beer selection.
This hotel is very charming. My family stayed here on a road trip and loved it, the beds were very comfortable and there’s something interesting around every corner. Adorable and the staff are so warm and friendly. Would recommend 100%.
I could feel the history exuding from this place and I loved it!! However, NOT having the simple convenience of a coffee pot and hair dryer available in the wonderful king balcony suite really is a fail in the 21st Century.

Stayed on two occasions over the summer. Staff/Owners were very nice and accommodating. Restaurant and bar were still closed due to covid but not a deal breaker. Breakfast was nice. I now have a must stay place when traveling through.
Great atmosphere, decent food.

We traveled through Clayton NM on our way to Taos NM. Stayed one night with our 2 pups. We had a balcony room and loved it. The breakfast was delicious. Wish we could have experienced the saloon and restaurant but Covid has put a stop to a lot maybe some day we can return and experience them. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay.
Very nice change of pace from usual. The breakfast was very nice
A lot of characteristics. But close to train tracks

Wonderful place! Stopped on a whim during a kiddo drop off trip from Colorado to Texas and back. Jeanette was so sweet and the place is just adorable. Sat on the porch for hours enjoying beautiful weather! Wore my new jewelry purchased in the lobby immediately. Thanks for a great stay!
I LOVE staying at this gem of hotel in Clayton! Beautiful historic building in a small quaint little town. Parking is readily available and rooms are very nice and clean and affordable. Will stay at The Eklund every chance I get!
This place was a gem. It was simple, clean and affordable with every hotel booked in this small town. Only thing was the noise from the train and trucks close by. I can definitely put up with that for a better price. Highly recommend.

Great experience! The caretaker of this hotel is sweet and knowledgeable and makes a darn good breakfast. Unfortunately the bar and restaurant sre closed because of covid still but we got to look around and take pictures. Almost a bed and breakfast feel in a hotel!
Hotel was great. Restaurant was not open yet.
We spent the night here while exploring the area. The history is fascinating. The hosts are very polite and knowledgeable (the property is family owned for generations). Breakfast was amazing!
If you have to stay in Clayton NM while in route, this place is not bad, but don't set expectations. The restaurant is closed, so no dinner there. The historical aspect of the hotel is interesting, but it is at best 3 stars. Breakfast is passable.
The staff are excellent, friendly and helpful. It's an old historic place and it's a real treat. Stop in and stay and tell the old motels, no-way, lol.
Ac makes the rooms nice and cold, hot water, and good water pressure. Comfy beds and super friendly staff. Only loss a star cause it's an older hotel with walls on the thin side. But breakfast was fantastically!
This was a quaint little hotel on our way to Colorado. The rooms were clean and the service was excellent! I would recommend this hotel to anyone making a stop in Clayton.
Google is now showing this restaurant as "open", but the are NOT. We stopped here to try to eat today & they still have a "due to Covid, out restaurant is closed" sign on the door. Very disappointed as this USED TO BE our favorite place to eat.

Charmingly restored early 1900's hotel with comfortable rooms and friendly owners. Enjoyed a quiet night and a good cup of coffee with breakfast. Wonderful old 1880's hotel. Host made special effort to offer homemade to go breakfast because of covid.

The history and ambiance. Jo Beth does a fabulous job entertaining us with the stories of the grand hotel and restaurant.
1800s cowboy hotel very rustic. The desk clerk was more tour guide than clerk. Very very interesting
Jo Beth made the whole experience so enjoyable and interesting! Such history! If COVID wasn’t around she would have served homemade food for breakfast but she made the best of what she could serve ever! Definitely would go back!
We were passing through from Austin to Colorado. And this was a great stopping point to rest our weary heads! The room was super clean and the bed was comfortable! Friendly owners and just an over all lovely place. A bit like a b&b because we got breakfast but it wasn't just a regular hotel free breakfast, quiche crossiants and monkey bread! A+
Very awesome historical place here in Clayton. As well as hand made artistic decor for sale made by Jobeth.
Historic hotel with modern updates. Clean with friendly staff. Get a balcony room as it is a great place to sit and eat takeout or drink wine. The balcony is large and is shared with 4 rooms. It overlooks the main Street in Clayton. Highly recommended.
This charming bed n breakfast was possibly the most immaculate, cleanest place I've ever stayed in. And I had a lovely, relaxing breakfast in their courtyard with a perfect omelette!
The owner was beyond helpful and courteous. She and her husband are a wonderful source of information about the history of the hotel and the local history. Breakfast was excellent and perfect. My wife and I will definitely stay there again.
A beautiful Historic gem in Eastern New Mexico near the Texas line. Step back in time and enjoy the ambience! Very well run and maintained.
Had trouble getting our order!!! Usually didn’t have what we ordered
We are taking a new route to Lake Havasu and needed a stop. We are in Clayton NM on Hwy 56 so we thought this looked like a good place to explore. A step back in time to a very interesting Hotel/bar/ Restaurant. The atmosphere is awesome. The history is very interesting and the staff and food were great. Next time through we must spend the night. .or two!!
The menu here is quite diverse for an out of the way town. I noted several regular locals were there. I had the pork chops at the suggestion of one of those locals. The sauce they use was sweet and hot, but not overly so. I might have had a second beer, but I had driven 9 hours that day. A pleasant experience overall
The place, the people, the magic of this place is unbelievable!
This is by far the worst place to have super in Clayton. The service is by far the worst I have ever had. There is only one waitress who doesn't have a chip on there shoulder. We asked for an item to come out with super; it came out first, so we reminded her. The item went back into the kitchen and set under the lamp. When it came out it was half cold and greas logged. She then proceed to argue... More

How ever I van not speak for the hotel; for I have never stayed there. Less
Beautiful atmosphere, but the food was just okay.
Love everything about this hotel. Ms. Jo Beth is a wonderfully attentive innkeeper. The breakfasts are amazing & if you're lucky, you'll hear hear her playing piano. They are generously accommodating, even to my beloved dog!
Beautiful old hotel, restaurants saloon, nicely restored with interesting history. Management and staff are wonderful.
This place, oh my goodness, I can't even begin to describe how comfy and cozy it is, I want to keep it "my" little secret but how unfair would that be. My goodness I felt like I was at my childhood home and grandma's all in one place, could the walls need a little TLC yes but why would anyone do that, it's the character of this grand ole hotel that needs to continue to shine and those walls tell ... My goodness I felt like I was at my childhood home and grandma's all in one place, could the walls need a little TLC yes but why would anyone do that, it's the character of this grand ole hotel that needs to continue to shine and those walls tell stories, lots and lots of stories, the cracks in the walls and the creaking floors oh yes they too are perfection, the bed felt like my grandma's bed all nice and cozy and comfy. Our room was a balcony and of course Don enjoyed sitting out there even though it was cold. The train, oh my goodness, took me to memories of being a kid and living next to the tracks, what fun it was to hear that whistle blow!!! I love trains!!! Jo Beth is the sweetest lady and makes you feel like family, she illustrated a child's book that I purchased in the lobby and she designed it to be dyslexic friendly. She's the absolute sweetest lady, I'm thankful to have met her and husband, he used to work at the True Value Hardware store here, that's how they met, she would go get stuff and it went from there ❤ Lots of history in this one building, no ghost experience for us whew Less
Very nice place if you’re into history & great hospitality & service! It’s not the most luxurious, but like I said it’s got some great good ol’ west history & a perfect pitstop.
👍
Food was delicious. The server checked my to go order and discovered that the cherry pie was missing. She made my night cause now I have eaten your great cherry pie!
Old Saloon atmosphere with delicious food and cocktails. The wait staff was extremely helpful and friendly. I highly recommend stopping here if in town. Reservations are recommended but not required.

Excellent!
Great food, staff so nice! Lovely old Hotel will have to stay next time around.
Second time to stay here. This time very disappointing. Interesting historic hotel but NO refrigerator, phone, microwave in rooms. Our room was FREEZING cold when we checked in because staff didn't bother to turn on the heater before we arrived. Took over an hour to warm up. Extremely loud train sounded like it was running through the building until at least midnight and then again by 6:30am... More

Wonderful place with Wild West charm. Great dinner in the Saloon, jacuzzi tub, comfortable King bed and a terrific homemade breakfast. I will definitely be back.
Super friendly people, clean , comfortable room, interesting history
A must stay. Friendly staff and a lot history in the town itself
The restaurant is in the hotel and it is a nice stop if you are visiting or driving through Clayton. The food and service are good. They have some fun pictures on the walls of old maps of the area. The hotel lobby is fun to look around in as well.
A true piece of history! Great people and nice rooms!
Was slot of fun seeing about blackjack
One of the last great frontier hotels. This place has an excellent restaurant that is straight out of the west. The saloon is magnificent and even has several bullet holes in the walls and ceiling. The rooms are pristine and decorated in original antiques with a southwestern flavor. Loved this place.
Good food, good atmosphere, beautiful hotel! Unique stop!
Great atmosphere. Good food.
Breakfast was below average. No shampoo in our bathroom. The rib eye had no flavor at all. The waitress seemed in a rush and not very polite. She seemed angry at work.
Checked it out. I hope to stay here soon.
We had a delightful lunch at Hotel Ekland! Our server was friendly and informative, the food was served in a timely manner, and both of our meals were mighty tasty! Given the opportunity we will stop again!
Excellent tasting food and Good service.
This place is wonderful!
Old fashioned hotel.....loved it

The food was excellent (green chili cheeseburger & chili rellenos)! The accomodations were peaceful and restfull! We spent the last 28 yrs in the Black Hills of South Dakota and had a great appreciation for this historical setting. The staff were friendly and served an excellent breakfast the next morning! We look forward to stopping again as our southwest travels permit! Do you like the path less traveled? If so, then you and Henry David Thoreau would feel right at home here! Stop by and enjoy a piece of eastern New Mexico history, you'll be glad you did! Less
