I have been to multiple different PT programs and what stood out about Up and Running the most was the amount of time they spend with you each session. Sam, my PT at Up and Running, was amazing! She first worked with me to relieve my pain and then worked with me to keep the pain from coming back. Sam used a variety of techniques to relieve the immediate pain. She taught me important body cues so that I could still run but protect my body from injury as I was rehabing my hip. I loved how responsive Sam was to my needs and was realistic and respected my time. As a busy mom of three, Sam worked with me to keep the exercises concise yet challenging in order to get me back to running hills pain free. Up and Running PT also uses a patient portal where the PT can upload videos of the exercises which was great because it helped me with my form and able to confidently perform the exercises at home. Overall my experience with Up and Running PT and Sam were phenomenal. If I need PT in the future, I will definitely be returning. Less
Sam was awesome and I’m extremely happy with my experience. The home exercises and the exercises we did in the office helped me reach all of my goals. She was patient and kind and made sure I was comfortable every session. I highly recommend Sam and Up and Running P/T!
I've been an avid runner since high school, and for the last 3 years have been a Physical Therapist. There is nowhere else I would trust for high quality physical therapy care than Up and Running. My many experiences working with AJ and Sam have been nothing short of exceptional. I would recommend Up and Running PT to anyone and will continue to come back!
AJ was super responsive and helpful in getting me scheduled for a physical evaluation and gait analysis. After dealing with a decent foot injury he was very attentive when listening to the story / symptoms, evaluating my gait, and describing the process and plan to get back stronger than before. Will go back if I have any other questions or need advice with regards to running and ortho health.
Up and running PT is incredible! I fell and hurt my wrist, it negatively impacted my golf game, and my doctor recommended PT, Sam was amazing, she taught me exercises and stretches that helped my recovery, and even increased my swing speed! Highly highly recommend them if you are an active person or competitive athlete.

I’m an older runner (euphemistically, a “master runner”); with my history I was facing the prospect of no longer running. Last year I had to drop out of the QuadRock. But AJ really turned me around. He listened to my concerns, my realities, and my goals. He was able to integrate his remarkable understanding of the science and practice of running with my interests and needs. I couldn’t have asked for a better partner for recovery. He provided the guidance to get me on track to healthy and enjoyable running for the foreseeable future. I am forever grateful. I was at the point I was pulling back on personal goals and reducing what I thought I would be able to do this summer. Within a few weeks of working with Joey I started to see improvements. I wish I would have come into Up and Running sooner! I've been to several PTs for various issues over the years. Typical PTs will spend 10-15 minutes with you and recommend 2-3 appointments a week. This approach limits the progress that is made between appointments and limits the effectiveness of each session. With that PT typical approach it feels like you're wasting your time and money while in clinic. Up and Running spent quality time in clinic and made the most of the time I was spending there. Their approach makes the time spent in clinic so much more valuable and useful which I really appreciated. Joey was able to understand the issues I was having almost immediately and worked with me in clinic to give me the right tools and approaches to make progress in recovery. He helped me fix my training program to avoid issues in the future and I'm back on track to meet my goals. For anyone looking for individual, valuable, and smart PT I highly recommend Joey and the team at Up and Running Physical Therapy. Less

From the first session Sam was clear about what PT would involve, her and my respective roles in the treatment plan, and the tools and methodologies available to me. She prioritized equipping me with strategies, tools, and tactics so I could continue to heal outside of formal physical therapy sessions. When there was a beneficial practice I could not take advantage outside of therapy sessions (i.e. dry needling), she made sure to prioritize those in-session. When there was an issue that needed a second opinion, the other PTs in the office were more than happy to assist. After 8 weekly sessions, Sam's pelvic health expertise and thoughtful treatment helped me get back to having fun outside instead of worrying about my next injury. The office is full of PTs who are also athletes that engage in running, climbing, and lifting. I would highly recommend (and already have) that anyone needing PT seek treatment here. Less

Within a week of training for the Horestooth Half I was already telling myself that I probably needed to quit and get a refund. My hamstring was killing me by mile 3 and this was an old injury that I'd been dealing with for about 7 years. Since that injury I hadn't run anything over 3 miles, was really cautious when lifting and even went to other professionals to get help. I figured wth, why not go see URPT (I'd seen their FB promo) and see if they had anything different I could try. I went in for the initial evaluation and Dr. Sam put me through a series of assessments. She told me it would take about ten sessions with her and hard work at home to get me to a place where I could confidently run the half marathon. Spoiler alert! I just completed my 7th session as of late March 2023, left my appointment and ran 10 miles out on the trail that runs along Shields with NO PAIN! Don't get me wrong, my body was sore and feeling things that it hadn't felt in years but I felt no pain in my hamstring or hip. I had written off running as a form of exercise and told myself that this injury was just something that would always nag me so I was constantly waiting for the pain to creep in. But nope, nothing! I do my at-home exercises consistently and I know that it's going to take a few more months of work to make sure this thing is healed for good, but being able to run pain free is something I never thought I'd be able to do again. I can't thank Dr. Sam enough for helping me. It's more than just running this half marathon; it's being able to run with my husband and know that I'll be able to run with my daughters when they get older. As for working with Dr. Sam, I cannot say enough good things about her. She's extremely thorough with her evaluation and her depth of knowledge not only allows her to recreate the exact pain, but give you the right exercises to effectively fix that pain. She gets down to business and pushes you the right amount to make sure you're getting better without overdoing it. She is a true professional. Moral of the story is that if you're dealing with any pain or telling people you're just "not a runner", go see URPT! They'll be real with you if they can help and they won't sugar coat what it actually takes to get better. You also have to be accountable to putting in the work, but their expertise is unmatched. See you out on the course in a few weeks! Less

I found up and running through a google search and was so pleased with my initial assessment I started going regularly for 6 months. My schedule was limited so I wasn’t able to go in every week but even with limited visits, Sam was able to do so much work on me and give me exercises to do in between that made a world of difference for my body. I had gone to PT last summer and had a terrible experience (pt didn’t help my injury at all and I left with more pain than I started with) so I was hesitant but Sam’s approach was SO much better! I told her my injuries and she did comprehensive movement assessments on me and found more muscles (than I had realized) that were strained and some of the causation of the injuries and created a program that attacked the problem from the root. I have been working with her for 6 months now and went from barely being able to breathe because I was in so much pain to running faster than ever on trails and throwing my body around on ninja warrior courses regularly again! She has also given me exercises and progressions for preventative measures so I can maintain the health and strength we have created. I can’t thank Sam enough for all of her help. Worth every dime. Since then, Joey has been an incredible help in getting me back to running stronger! Now 2 months later, my shin problems have gone away, I am running faster and stronger, and I have a new set of great exercises to maintain my strength! My age, years of sitting at a desk job, and a slew of old injuries combined to limit my mobility. I am a more proficient dancer than I was four years ago, but I want to have a greater expression of movement. I have been disappointed previously with doctors and physical therapists who basically told me that my expectations were too high and/or that I was too active for my age. I changed my search to try to find a PT that focused in sport movement and who understands why I want to continue participating in my sport at my highest level and I found UP and Running PT. I meet with Joey once a week and he gives me a regime of lower kinetic chain exercises for me to do throughout the week at home. The exercises are challenging, but I am working to attain my goal. When I started, I was only thinking about my bad knees, but it turns out the exercises also help my ankle and hip joints. I loved working with Sam at Up and Running. I specifically searched for pelvic floor physical therapists after experiencing severe pain in my pelvic floor muscles. When I started my sessions, I was in pain daily, couldn’t sit comfortably and missed out on a family vacation because the pain was so severe I couldn’t sit in the car for a long time. It was very hard emotionally and physically. Sam is very knowledgeable in this area of the body and helped determine my pain was caused by overly tight muscles and helped me with breathing, stretches, and strengthening exercises that have greatly reduced my pain. I’ve been able to get back to my normal life and daily activities with much less pain (and anticipating everything returning to normal with continued stretching and exercises). I appreciated Sam’s gentle approach and always making sure I was comfortable. When you are working with the pelvic floor, you have to be comfortable with the person you’re working with and Sam was great from my very first visit. One of my favorite things was dry needling that was offered in-office during my sessions. I also liked that Sam asked me at each appointment what I wanted to accomplish during each session, so I was able to do the things I really felt I needed. I was a brand new runner when I met AJ this Spring at a local 5k race, and was immediately intrigued by his run coaching offering. I wanted to become a better runner, and was already interested in signing up for more races over the summer time. We first had an introductory call where he took the time to patiently answer all of my questions and paint a picture of what working together would look like. I filled out an intake form with my goals, current training program (or lack thereof), and before I knew it he had programmed my first week of runs into the Final Surge app. Not only did AJ listen to my goals, he encouraged me to set them too! So, I signed up for a half marathon which at the time felt like a huge stretch for me. Throughout the training process, AJ was always available for support, encouragement, feedback, and to talk me through a race day plan. It felt so good to know that someone had my back and was holding me accountable. I also found a lot of comfort in knowing that he is a Physical Therapist and an avid runner himself. He KNOWS what he’s talking about, and he coaches in a way that is encouraging and positive. It’s been just over 6 months since I started worthing with AJ, and wow has it paid off! I’ve gone from a brand new runner, to a runner that has taken a podium at a 10k. I can also now proudly say that I just ran that half marathon—the farthest I’ve ever run in my life, and the fastest. Just saying that fills me with so much pride + joy, and I truly don’t believe any of this would have come to fruition without Up and Running PT. Sam was amazing and gave me new hope that I could heal and get back to the sport I love. She did a very thorough evaluation of my symptoms and muscle strength. She tailored a plan for strength training and a step up approach to running that allowed me to jump back in safely. Through specific strength exercises, dry needling, and a reasonable yet challenging running plan, I am thrilled to say I am back doing what I love with 70% less pain than when we started working together. And I’m hopeful I will only improve from here. I would HIGHLY recommend Sam at Up and Running! Less

This did not happen at Up and Running PT, and I believe I chose the best place possible for an injured runner to go to! Working with Sam has helped me to learn so much about my body, how to heal from injury and ease back into running, while still staying super active (which I love)! Sam is always open to answering my questions and making sure I fully understand why I am doing what I am doing. I have been going for about 10 weeks now, and have a 50-mile race coming up in about 4 weeks. Sam has helped me get to a great point in which I am back to training and will be prepared to race! I thoroughly recommend AJ as an ultra-running coach. He helped me get to, and through, my first 100K (Never Summer) injury free which I doubt would have happened without his help. Regular contact through meetings, texts, calls, and the occasionally group run, kept my training on track.

In September 2021, I awoke at 4am with my head twisted to the side and severe pain radiating down my arm. An ER visit revealed a herniated disc and the next few months involved steroid anti-inflammatories, chiropractic treatment, cervical traction, and massage therapy. Although the pain improved, I had residual numbness and weakness in my left arm. My MRI showed premature disc degeneration and nerve compression at level C5/C6 due to a neck injury 14 years ago. Without surgery, my prognosis was permanent nerve damage that would likely end my ability to rock climb, so I opted to have the disc replaced in January 2022. When I was 1 month post-op, my neurosurgeon recommended PT, so I reached out to Up and Running. I met AJ in the Fort Collins running community and knew his approach would be running and climbing specific. I was initially afraid to do much of anything with my arms because I didn’t want to worsen the ongoing symptoms. AJ helped me feel confident about gradual weight training and taught me how to target specific muscle groups, so that I could improve my strength asymmetry. He also recommended some adjustments to my running training plan so that I could prepare for Quad Rock 25 without too much impact on my neck. I’m pleased to report that I’m 3 months post-op and already rock climbing and running again. I’m optimistic that I’ll continue to improve and get stronger in the upcoming year. She was able to help me apply the appropriate amount of load during PT exercises to heal and strengthen by Achilles without exacerbating the problem (the appropriate load is what I’d been missing trying to treat it on my own based on a few articles I’d read online). I’d highly recommend AJ and Sam for anyone with running related injuries. Less
Sam was awesome! She helped me recover my leg strength after healing from a stress fracture, and also gave me the perfect exercises to recover my core strength that was lost due to giving birth to twins. She knows an exercise for literally every part of the body and every motion, and gave me so many tools to keep improving beyond the sessions. Thank you Sam and Up and Running PT!

As someone who had an extensive running and physiology background, I thought I could solve it on my own but wasn't able to until I found Up and Running PT. I tried rest, stretching, massage, exercises, and didn't solve it until I worked with Sam to figure out the source of the problems and how to create an effective plan to solve my issues while still allowing me to keep running. As a runner, Up and Running PT was very appealing to me as I knew they would understand typical runner injuries and how to eliminate them while still completing running goals. This expertise along with the much longer length of consultation and sessions was something I did not see available at any other PT's in the area. They were very nice and knowledgeable so I left every session feeling stronger and energized to continue running which is huge part of my life and I'm happy to have had them solve it after only a couple months. I know physical therapy sometimes seems like something you can on your own at home if you know the exercises but this is well worth it. Thanks guys! Less

As a fellow ultrarunner and science nerd, AJ had a refreshing no-BS approach to what my injury meant to my training, as well as what the current state-of-the-science said would be the most beneficial for getting me back to where I should be. I appreciated very much his willingness to explain to me the logic behind the workouts he had me do to re-strengthen my foot. It made me feel genuinely cared for and in-the-loop on what the the PT community recognizes is the best practice for treating my issue. AJ understands the awful feeling you get training for a trail race and having a major injury setback, and wants to get you back to your training plan as fast and as safe as possible. Later in the year, I suffered a partial tear of an A2 pulley in one of my fingers and, after taking a couple of weeks of rest, went back to AJ. Expanding on the information he explained while working with me on my shoulder injury, AJ not only gave me an incredibly effective, yet simple and easy to implement treatment plan, but a solid framework to understand how soft-tissue injuries and our perception of pain & discomfort interact during the injury, treatment and rehabilitation process to provide context above and beyond a simple "do X, Y & Z". This gave me a great baseline to better understand the signals my body was giving me and not only recover from the injury and return to climbing quickly and safely, but also avoid injury in the future and assist in working to treat & rehab future injuries. I'm following a similar process after straining a different pulley and the framework AJ taught me has proven invaluable during this time. I can't recommend AJ enough! Less
In only 3 visits, I have already seen a HUGE benefit from visits with Samantha. She is skilled in managing symptoms of endometriosis as well as pelvic floor muscle weakness and impaired coordination. Not only that, she is personable, will make you feel comfortable, and will give you the tools to support your progress at home. I would highly recommend her services:)
Samantha was attentive and did a great job at answering my questions and forming a specific plan for my injury. I was hesitant that 10 sessions would be enough however we are having to table our last two because I’ve done so well.
It has been so great working with Sam! I’m a runner and triathlete trying to get back into racing after having kids and with a hip labral tear. Since seeing Sam I’ve been able to run further and faster and overall my running has felt more fluid. I feel more confident at being able to manage the labral tear without surgery. Thanks Sam!

I have been going to see AJ for only three weeks and my mobility range has already increased to 140 degrees! I was already able to race again and can sit on both feet with a slight modification which is very exciting. AJ uses a variety of methods and exercises so he is able to define what works best for your particular anatomy. He is easy going and gentle but also knows when to push for best results. I ran to stave off age and stay off medications that seem to become part of a middle aged persons life and it was working. About 3 years ago I started suffering right side calf pain, then right side lower back pain, then right side piriformis, numbness. I was unable to walk a few blocks, let alone run. The medical drill: Orthopedic surgeon wants to operate on my back, family doctor sends me to rehab to learn how to place milk jug in refrigerator and how to stand in the shower to cope with my limitation for the rest of my life, another physician gives me epidurals, muscle relaxers, and pain meds. I had no accident, I had no falls, I hadn't overdone it lifting something, something wasn't right, but I could not get medical professionals to listen. Enter AJ: Step 1 --- he listened to my long drawn out story along with my theories on what I thought was wrong. Step 2 --- he asked pointed questions (what had I tried, what was my lifestyle, what worked in terms of reducing pain, what was I able to do comfortably, etc.) Step 3 -- he answered my questions and educated me as to why some of my theories or research were possibly right and where other ideas may be a little off base --- he wanted me to understand the big picture Step 4 --- He created a detailed plan, explained the plan, why he wanted me to follow the plan, and why I should not deviate from the plan (the plan is rehab exercises geared for MY ISSUE and a back to running plan geared for me) Step 5 --- 4 weeks into the plan I am running 5K without pain In closing: AJ listens, really evaluates for the individual, and comes up with a plan for the individual (no one size fits all approach). He communicates if you have questions -- he makes himself available for those quick questions or concerns --- just a great person to work with with Less

I have been an advocate and consumer of Physical Therapy since my mid 20's when I first started utilizing PT to keep me on the pitching mound after developing some chronic shoulder pain. PT has most definitely improved the quality of my life over the years because it has allowed me to keep active in the activities that bring me joy and connection. Not all PTs are the same. I am fortunate and grateful to have found AJ Cohen at Up and Running Physical Therapy after moving to Fort Collins. I came to him after the second occurrence over a three year period of severe foot pain that struck suddenly during my warm ups right before my first Olympic triathlon attempt. The first time it happened was right after a half marathon. The pain was so severe, I could not run on it for weeks (depressing!). After this second occurrence, I started to believe that my long running days were over and started working on accepting this "fact." I gave AJ at Up and Running a try after meeting him on a group run he hosted through our wonderful Fort Collins Trail Running club. He had given a brief talk on the importance of strength training for runners prior to the run. I was intrigued, because what he was talking about seemed so radical compared to what I have read and been taught from coaches over the years. Well, I can now say that working with AJ has been one of the best investments in myself I have made. He has reinvigorated my running. I completed my first trail marathon late last year, and now I am training for my first 50 miler! I am getting to enjoy long peaceful trail runs pain free and feel stronger than ever. And on top of that, I am playing catch with my two baseball players and able to do high altitude back packing trips with my daughter pain free! AJ does not waste my time and money using modalities that are not needed or called for. He takes the time to explain and educate me on the evidence based, rehab protocols he feels are going to be most effective for me, taking into account my actual life situations and goals. He is generous with his knowledge and advice and backs it up with the latest and best evidence. I now partner with him on coaching for my running goals. I found AJ at Up and Running PT this summer when I started feeling some pain behind my shin (runner). I had a number of things I was worried it might be (stress fracture, shin splints), but with some testing he was able to assess that it was my posterior tib. He gave me some exercises to do to strengthen the muscle, and tailored them to what I was capable of doing at home since I’ve been avoiding gyms due to COVID. The biggest difference between AJ and any other PT I’ve worked with is that he got me back to running SO much faster - mostly because he didn’t tell me to completely take time off. He gave me a program that started mostly with fitness walking and less running, and increased the ratio of running to walking over time. This in combination with the exercises meant that when I got back to being able to run the entire time, I hadn’t lost nearly as much fitness as I normally do when I’m trying to rehab an injury. I went from being unable to run without pain to finishing the Black Squirrel Half in a little over a month! Working with AJ has also completely changed the way I think about running injuries. In the past, I’ve always believed my injuries to be the result of imbalances, something being “wrong” with my body (flat feet/overpronation), or just needing to stretch more. I’ve learned from AJ that it’s really about whether the muscles and tissues are strong enough to withstand the training load, and that the best way to prevent injury isn’t to stretch like crazy but to do specific exercises to help my body adapt to the training load. I’ve cut a lot of practices that weren’t actually helping much (mostly all the time spent stretching and foam rolling, and a lot of glute work), and I spend my limited time doing exercises that are way more effective at making me a stronger runner and preventing injury. I would 100% recommend AJ/URPT to anyone who’s looking for evidence based physical therapy that is going to get them back to their running as quickly as possible and make them a stronger runner going forward! Since starting with AJ in January 2020, I've had the best year of sustained success running. It's been a good balance of strengthening the right muscle groups, running smarter, and training smarter too. He does a good job of setting you up for reasonable expectations with what running will look like, how to read and react to different levels and types of pain, and does a good job of encouraging and pushing when needed. He is one of the nerdiest people I've met, which is a good person to have in the physical therapy field. I always feel he keeps up with the newest research. AJ helped me train safely through my injury that began 2 months prior to Quad Rock 25 mile race. Had some knee pain that got up to a "5." The week following my injury I mindlessly got on the treadmill and had so much pain I had to stop, but immediately thereafter remembered to do the warmup exercises from AJ and was able to run about 3.5 mi with little pain. I was given a number of time effective exercises that I could do while juggling my work and childrens' activities while safely increasing mileage again. Fortunately I was able to start and finish the Quad Rock 25 mi race healthy and even beat my previous times. I love the kettle bell injury prevention exercises!! Less
AJ was great at helping me address what seemed like a laundry list of body issues. He gave me great exercises to start healing and strengthening.
I first learned about Up & Running/ AJ when I went to one of his free running clinics (which was incredibly informative, btw). I was having some hip issues as I was increasing my mileage. He provided me some mobility exercises that quickly fixed the issue. So, when I started having some lower leg issues, I knew right where to turn. I had a great experience working with AJ! He is extremely knowledgable and passionate about what he does, which results in amazing patient care and education. Within a few sessions I was back to running, and because of the education he provided me with, I was able to run longer distances with significantly decreased pain. AJ is very knowledgeable and easy to work with. He helped with my hip and back pain with super quick results. Thorough assessment of my pain and range of motion, and great with the dry needles. Highly recommend, especially for climbers!
AJ with Up & Running is a great physical therapist! I have gone to many PTs over the years and AJ is the first one who was able to pinpoint where my pain was coming from and exactly how it was impacting me. He is really up-to-date with the current research and explains the data in a way that is accessible and helpful. He really cares about the people he works with and will get you back to the thi... AJ helped with a leg and back injury and got me running again! He is very easy to work with and knows his stuff!!
AJ does a great job. He fixed my knee tendinitis mid-season so I was still able to shred 3 feet of blower pow in Jackson Hole for a week straight. Very personalized experience and thorough exam. At appointments, you get an hour of AJ's full attention and he gives you the education, tools and workouts to do on your own time until the next visit. I had a great experience working with AJ. I am also a PT so I’m pretty picky. His one on one attention and diverse treatment approaches got me back to running, lifting and being active within just a few sessions. I highly recommend Up and Running Physical Therapy!

I highly recommend AJ! He truly wants you to get better, not simply make you come in for more appointments. He’s super knowledgeable especially when it comes to running and climbing and explains everything as he goes. Very pleased!
