Not only are the trainers encouraging but so are my fellow classmates and passing gym members. I really like how this program puts you through the fundamentals to teach you the proper forms and techniques when it comes to these new movements before transitioning to full-on CrossFit (great for newbies as CrossFit can be a little intimidating at first). This program provides you with all the tools that you need to succeed: a workout regimen, a nutrition plan and an accountability partner! I’ve learned that my workout style is best in the group format and this is the perfect gym for that. Also, they are dog friendly and it’s nice to have a furry friend around! Would totally recommend to anyone trying to get into CrossFit! Less
I lost 34.6 lbs and 5.5% body fat in the 6 week challenge! Paula is a great accountability coach and trainer. The workout classes are always fun, exciting, and challenging.

The strict meal plan/no drinking was the most difficult but also the most important part of the challenge. Stick with it and remember almost everyone at this gym has gone through the same thing. Paula my accountability coach was always available to answer any questions I had. Jackie and Frank were the coaches I spent most of my time with, both are AMAZING coaches. They always left me drenched with sweat, out of breath, laughing and feeling accomplished. Thanks guys! Less
I did the six week challenge here and I have to say it was the greatest investment to myself that I could have ever done, I saw instant results and I learned so much about myself that I never knew. I learned so much about how resilient I can be with a strong mind set and straight up dedication but, it’s nice that I didn’t have to do it alone I had my coach Paula by my side and it made sticking true to myself easier. Just finished up the 6 week challenge. It is advertised as free but actually costs $600. If you lose 20lbs or lose 5% body fat you can get those $600 as credit towards a membership. But even then you can’t use all the credit to pay monthly. You can only use $150 of it. Overall, I wouldn’t recommend it if you’re not financially able but would if you need that extra push to live a healthier life. I personally decided to go through with it because it includes a meal plan, accountability coach, and classes to improve my health instead of spending it on other unnecessary things. The classes are really great! And the people do focus on safety and improvement. I didn’t get so lucky with my accountability coach because I didn’t feel I could reach out to him whenever I was struggling so I just reached out for the weekly check ins. If you get bored at the gym easily or just don’t know what exercises you should be doing, CrossFit is a great solution for that. Less
I’m about to finish the 6 week challenge. I definitely recommend it. I followed the meal plan, and I attended 4 fundamental classes a week. The coaches were really encouraging and helpful during the workouts. If you hold yourself accountable, you’ll definitely see results.

This review is being posted as part of completing the 6-week challenge, but all thoughts are my own. Overall, I had a great experience at Bucktown, lost 13 pounds, and would do the challenge again. Ultimately, I did not sign up for a membership because even with a discount, the monthly cost was more than I was willing to spend on a gym. Things I loved 1. Community atmosphere – Everyone is so supportive! There's a very welcoming and encouraging atmosphere. You’ll get plenty of cheering from coaches and fellow fundamentals classmates during workouts. 2. Puppies – A few of the staff bring their dogs to work and members are allowed to bring dogs as well, so there are almost always cute, well-behaved pups hanging around the gym. 3. Small class sizes – The fundamentals classes max out at 10 people, with average class size of 5-7. The coaches are able to provide lots of feedback and adjustments as you learn new techniques. 4. Variety of workouts – I was a running & yoga person before this challenge, so I learned a lot of new fitness routines. You’ll never do the same workout twice, and you’ll be challenged every time you show up. 5. Stronger every day – I loved feeling stronger day by day as I completed the challenge (though I could have done without all the bruises). It’s great to see the pounds coming off, look leaner in the mirror, and just feel more capable. Things that didn’t work for me/room for improvement 1. Meal plan – We received zero directions on the goals of the diet except to follow the meal plan recipes, but annoyingly we did get a pushy sales pitch for supplements. The meal plan is boring and repetitive; I had to make a lot of substitutions to make it palatable, but coaches didn’t offer any help with calculating calorie exchanges, eating when traveling, managing snacks/cravings, or other commons FAQs. 2. Coaching inconsistency – Each coach takes a little different approach, which has its advantages, but sometimes they’re inconsistent in advice and techniques. Some coaches offer lot of warm-up and stretching, others get straight to prepping you for the workout, and I heard conflicting advice on the meal plan. 3. Parking – There is very limited parking and classes are frequently interrupted so people can move their cars. If you can’t walk or take public transit to Bucktown, look for a different crossfit gym. 4. Cool-down – there is no cool-down or stretching after the workout, which I found problematic. 5. Misleading advertising – If you’re reading reviews, you should already be aware that this is not a “free” program. If you complete the challenge, your $600 is applied as a down payment on the rest of your yearly membership. Less

It’s a time commitment and a lot of discipline to complete. Not to mention I spent considerably more than what I typically would on groceries in following the nutrition plan. Having said that, I’d say it’s been worth it. My physical condition has improved (I was in good shape when I started the challenge) and I feel that I’m able to sleep better and generally have more energy and improved concentration, which I attribute largely to the nutrition. As far as the workouts, I’ve really enjoyed the classes and the instructors have been really helpful. They’re able to modify the workouts so you can participate and be challenged regardless of what you’re physical condition is currently or if you have any specific physical limitations. The groups are fun and it doubles as a way to meet people and build community. The gyms clean and well kept and as of my writing this they have just purchased some new barbells and bikes. I would absolutely recommend this to anyone looking for a way to get in better shape and learn something new about yourself. Less

After Rookie Rumble, I decided to like their page on Facebook & soon after I came across their 6 Week Challenge video. I said, what the heck let's give it a shot!! On orientation day I could see the positive energy at this gym & excitement for us newbies to begin our journey. My journey started 6 weeks ago & let me just say I had zero intentions of signing up after the 6 weeks. Reason being is that I am currently under contract with another fitness gym. Also, I commute everywhere & the fact that they have a small parking lot wasn't appealing to me. However, I have now been going 3xs a week & have NEVER had an issue finding parking so that's a plus! The coaches JT, Andrew, Matt, Jackie, Paula are simply amazing!! They really care about how you perform & push you when they see you doubt yourself. I did things these past 6 weeks that I never thought was possible. In essence, It was great to see myself become more motivated as the weeks passed to try different techniques. I am excited & looking forward to continuing my CrossFit journey here at BTCF. Thank you, for welcoming me into the family. Less

If you don't write review or check-in on Facebook every time you gets in the gym, they will NOT REFUND you even if you get to the GOAL. There are also many rules on the contract to try their best to make sure you cannot get your $600 back. Secondly, they are not as good as they act in the orientation. The accountable and nutrition coach are not helpful at all. The meal plan is similar to the Keto diet (which proved to be unhealthy to normal people). I didn't get any progress in the first 3 weeks but I followed exactly their meal plan. The coach told me I can lose some weight during the period. If I didn't see any progress, it must be my fault that I didn't follow. Seriously?? Then the last 3 weeks I customized the food on my own and work out more to reach the goal. But you can imagine, losing 5% of 20lb in such short time is VERY HARMFUL to your body. Less

I did my 6 week challenge here. Love the gym and people! It makes me stronger.
I participated in the six week challenge, it's radically changed my body structure and helped me reintegrate healthy habits, like hydration, cooking at home, and sleeping more. The coaches are great motivators and the community is welcoming and supportive. Plus, at least once week I see a dog there. 10/10 would recommend, esp if you're committed to putting in the work.
It’s a great experience! Super friendly staff. Friendly community. I did the 6 week challenge, and my accountability coach was Paula. She’s the best! Very nice, kind and caring person!
Free Crossfit challenge = sign up for a year of membership or pay a crazy amount in deposit that you only get back if you lose the amount of weight they want you to. Also very pushy and hostile when you say you’re not interested (although the girl at the front desk was nice)
Great gym. Great instructors. 6 week challenge needs better organization. Scheduling a class can be difficult if not discouraging. But the work outs helped to persevere through some of the areas of weakness.

HONEST REVIEW This review is based solely on their “free” 6-week challenge. First off, if you don’t have $600 to throw around and waste, don’t bother. I signed up thinking this would be free and drove over an hour to their orientation about how this challenge works. They talk about how it’s all “personalized” to you, you’ll get a personal coach, and 100% free. It’s definitely not any of this. They give you a very generic meal plan that’s based on counting macros, your “personal coach” barely checks up on you besides “what are you doing to drop weight these last 3weeks?”, or very generic “motivational” things. Also, the meal plan is basically the same for everyone minus the portion sizes are probably a bit different. After their orientation is when they decide to tell you you actually have to pay $600 to do this program to “hold you accountable”. I get that holding your money will hold people accountable for sure, but you definitely should NOT have to pay almost $1000 for this bogus program! It’s not worth it! The first 3 weeks you take On-ramp classes, which are just classes that show you how to do certain movements like a power clean, deadlift...etc, then you’ll actually workout for at most 15minutes after spending 45min learning the movements. I get that learning the movement is important, but when you only have 6 weeks to drop 20lbs or 5% body fat and you’re already somewhat fit, then this WILL NOT give you any drastic changes! Furthermore, they measure your body fat on a Omron handheld body fat monitor. Those things are super inaccurate and can fluctuate by as much as 2-3% based on hydration, body temp, and if you worked out beforehand or not! This being said leads me into my last point, my own experience. First, their meal plan and workouts didn’t do much drastic change for me considering I’ve been pretty active due to being in the military, so I had to find my own extra workouts to do based on cardio, and cut the meal plan they gave me in half to actually have some results. I went in for my final weigh in at 4:45AM and was at 135lbs and 18.6% body fat; I started at 148lbs and 23.4% body fat. However, the day before I was down at 17.6% body fat, but I used the monitor AFTER I worked out. This same day, at 5:45AM I decided to take a video and measure my body fat again after I did the 5AM workout class because it didn’t seem right that I had to measure my body fat before a workout when their contract doesn’t mention that at all. Of course I was back down to 17.6% body fat!!! When I showed them this they basically ignored me and said they already recorded my “final results”, even though this was the SAME DAY, less than an hour apart!!!! My $600 was in the hands of a super unreliable machine that fluctuated by as much as 1% in less than as hour that could’ve gotten my money back! By the way, I told Donna (my coach) about this over messenger, and she completely ignored my messages and just sent back very generic responses and ended it with my options of getting a membership there for “discounted” which it really isn’t discounted cause I put $600 “towards” it technically. Trust me, just get a good friend and make them workout with you at a gym that’s $10/month and look up a decent meal plan! Because this is a complete waste of $600. I only know of 1 person in my group who actually “dropped” the 5% and this was because she was able to submit the percentage AFTER her morning workout! If anyone is on the fence about it, just save yourself the money, unless you have $600 to donate to their gym, OR unless you’ve never worked out or eaten healthy in your life, then this plan might work for you. The facility is great, the staff is awesome and the other members are so friendly. I immediately started up in their 6 week Challenge. I have been an active person my whole life, but this program took me to a whole other level. They sat me down and asked me about my goals, provided me with a diet plan specific to my goal and then asked me to fully commit to it. It was not hard to commit after seeing incredible results in the first week. My accountability coach Matt followed me through it and regularly encouraged me and congratulated me with each week I made progress. My goal was to lose body fat and I do not exaggerate that fat literally melted right off of me each week. I do not regret a single early morning class because even when you don't think you have it in you, the staff is right there the whole way to give you the advice, technique and confidence to tackle any workout you walk into. If you're not ready to do it, be honest with yourself. + Accommodating: I ended up having A LOT of life changes going on just before the challenge I initially oriented for, so after I reached out the BTCF team, the coaches were very kind enough in postponing my challenge so I could truly give it my best shot amidst the chaos of work and life. -/+ There were coaches I preferred over others for specific teaching styles. Not all styles of coaching were consistent - which is fine! -/+For the most part, the staff is welcoming on a consistent basis...yes, for the most part. +I really liked the 6-week program's use of accountability coaches. Andrew was AWESOME. Rock on, AW. -Challenge specific: The diet program is adapted to the client but I don't think the program was necessarily the right approach for me and my needs. That being said, it’s not a one-size fits all challenge The diet regimen was pretty rigorous, and I do wish there was more of an individualized approach to it throughout the challenge. - Class times were available all week, but some filled up a week in advance. It was difficult for me to make it in at a decent hour (not 5am or 6am or 8pm) since I commute to the suburbs for work. Overall, I like the gym, the camaraderie, and the exposure I got to Crossfit from BTCF. Just one star down for the lack of transparency and issues with the challenge and coaches. Just some perspective from me before you keep reading: I wasn't really in it for the weight loss, I just wanted to get in shape. In retrospect, I probably would have benefited from a less intense challenge - but I have learned that through this experience. I have a specific preference in what I need from a coach and diet/fitness program that would encourage me to invest in a gym, so I was not perfectly satisfied - but overall pleased with the experience and opportunity. Overall, I recommend the experience for those willing to give CrossFit a shot. Less

Love the staff and the people I’ve met through the gym. Did the 6-week challenge but wasn’t prepared for the nutrition aspect of it. I love the fact that there was a monetary amount set up front for accountability purposes for this challenge. You complete the challenge, you get it back. You slack and don’t take it seriously, you don’t. It makes you stick to the whole plan, which includes workout sessions and nutrition, and makes you think twice when you start craving things not in your meal plan. Immediately I started shedding weight, which I didn’t think I had much to shed, and also body fat. My body looks good again and feels solid. Definitely have learned a few things about nutrition and exercising that I can implement moving forward in my life. I highly recommend putting yourself through the challenge. You’ll be glad you did. The most impressive part about the whole experience was the attention to form and technique that the coaches give here. The first 3 weeks are spent on on-boarding people who are new to the gym/Crossfit in general. There are accountability coaches (shout out to Matt and Andrew) who monitor your progress and keep you motivated and on track towards achieving the goals. Not only do the coaches teach the basics with utmost detail and care at the beginning, but they spend time in every class on making sure the members get their form and technique right. This is extremely important and probably forgotten but extremely essential to avoiding injuries, which, I personally know a thing or two about (I had shoulder injuries in both my shoulders before and not once did I injure or aggravate anything over the entire 6 weeks) Lastly, and probably most important to this challenge was the nutrition plan that one receives before starting the challenge..Let me tell you, it works. The coaches stay with you all the way and provided you stay with them, you see the results! Less

It’s been a hot minute since I really focused on working out regularly, and this challenge 100% helped me remember why feeling stronger is so great! If you have the time, and can be focused/dedicated for 6 weeks, I would recommend. The coaches and staff at Bucktown have been nothing but helpful, encouraging and most importantly for me, welcoming. In all my workouts there was a varying amount of strength level, and adjustments were always made (whether someone needed more or less challenge). My only critique is how they sell the accountability coach aspect of the program. My expectation was that it would be a little more personalized (it’s one message a week), but I will say that I didn’t need a lot of questions answered- and likely if you did, I think the relationship there would be more involved. Overall, this challenge has given me a jump start on getting back into consistent workouts, and I was able to try out CrossFit to see what all they hype is about... and it works. :) Less

And, to be fair... some of the stereotypes are true. :) I’ve done CrossFit style workouts, so I wasn’t a total “noob” but first time in the “lions den.” There are a lot of complex movements in CrossFit and many times you need to do those movements repeatedly in a given workout. The coaches do a great job breaking those movements down so that you are doing the workouts properly, and most importantly, safely! The gym community is very warm and welcoming. Regardless of you fitness level, you will feel like you belong. Coaches and other members alike; everyone is there to create an atmosphere centered around fitness and making it fun. Matt was a really great coach and we learnt the technique of the most important moves (box jumps, lifting, row deadlift etc). Thanks to this we felt confident for the crossfit classes. I haven't reached the challenge goals which were: - 20 pounds or -5% Bodyfat. I only lost -7 pounds and -3,5% bodyfat, which is not bad but I think that the challenge is not possible for everyone. It depends on how far you come from and your metabolism etc etc... But they propose you a discount according to your weight loss or bodyfat loss, which is a good reward. Anyway, the box is great and there is a good atmosphere. The coaches were great apart from some uncomfortable remarks sometimes. That's why I put 4 stars instead of 5. Less

I was hesitant to give this review 5 stars, maybe 4?, as not all was as promised, particularly from the accountability coach. However, upon reflection, one use consider that we are accountable to ourselves and there were a lot of good things I found and enjoyed about this 6-week challenge. If you are considering being part of the challenge you should evaluate whether it is feasible/doable for you. Do you have 20lbs to lose, or 5% body fat? No, then it will be hard and you'll be unlikely to complete it. Are you likely or disciplined enough to follow a meal plan/guidelines? No, maybe this is not for you. Do you have $600 on hand that you can spare to lose in case you do not successfully complete the challenge? If not, this might not be for you. On the other hand, how much do you want to improve your health and body?Maybe you are already fit and might not need this much, or you might have bad eating habits and a nonexistent exercise routine. How much is your health worth to you? I pose this question because if you join the challenge and follow the guidelines and hold yourself accountable and disciplined, YOU WILL SEE RESULTS, even if you do not meet the challenge. You will be pushed to do your best and you will meet some great people who will encourage you along the way, not necessarily the coaches, although they do it too, but also other challengers and regulars. The three main things to consider before joining are: is my well being worth it, will I be disciplined enough, and can I afford it? Once you answer them, if you decide to join, then you will see results. Overall, this is a good place to be with lots of good things going on. Less

So, needless to say when I signed up for the 6 week challenge I was skeptical, especially after forking over $600 to join the challenge. The first few days of the challenge was certainly difficult. I was crabby, withdrawing from sugar and asking myself why I was so easily talked out of money. About a week in everything changed. I began to use the tools that Bucktown Crossfit had given me. I took inspiration from fellow challenge cohorts and saw the diet plan as a roadmap to a healthy eating lifestyle rather than a punishing undertaking. I looked forward to class and seeing other members and coaches. I realized that the $600 buy in was a necessary motivator required to get most schlubs like me to follow through on all my goals. Low and behold, 6 weeks later i've lost 23 pounds and 6% body fat. As the fat kid in the room who was forever intimidated by stale gyms with bros pumping out reps in the corner and never met a French Fry I didn't like , I can't say enough positive things about Bucktown Crossfit. The people: a true sense of community exists. You're not tuning out the environment around you with your earbuds. You actually talk to people! The coaches : Bucktown Crossfits' secret weapons. The coaches erode the intimidation factor , talk you through and help strategize the days workout and do their best to ensure that no one injuries themselves. All of the coaches are priceless but my handsdown favs are ANDREW WESTCOTT and JESSICA "JT " TAYLOR. ANDREW WESTCOTT and JESSICA "JT" TAYLOR I straight up would have failed without your help and attention! The workouts: intense but always different. Just completed BCTF's 6-Week CrossFit Challenge and it is an experience that goes way beyond the gym. I'm extremely happy with the results and experience I got In this program. Walking into orientation I wasn't sure if I was capable of keeping up with everyone; there was a class in session while I was there to hear about the program and I was very intimidated. That intimidation stems from my experience at Big Box gyms (no guidance, no form correcting or advising, no strategy). I was very aimless in my routines and knew I needed the help, so I set that worry aside and signed up. They offer a meal plan, accountability coach, and unlimited classes with very knowledgeable and a motivating staff. That alone is what makes this a 5-star review, but on top of that you're also paired with like-minded individuals who all bring an energy of their own into the gym. The members and staff here at Bucktown CrossFit really eliminates the stigma that some people associate with gyms (intimidation, judgement, etc.). I recommend this to anyone. Literally. I had zero experience, no strength training and my mobility very much needed improvement; I am in the best shape I've been in and it was made possible with their help. I find myself setting personal goals outside of their program and this is a very good starting point to anyone who needs a change of pace. This place gives you the tools to complete the challenge and helps every step of the way. They have your best interest in mind, and you can complete this challenge, too, if you're committed and will dedicate the time to scheduling your workouts, reading the material, and preparing your meals. I went to an orientation where i believed that it was 100% free, but had a $600 deposit sprung on me without any warning in any of the sign up forms. This, of course, puts pressure on the whole group in the orientation to sign up. If i had been warned about this, it would have been fine because if you succeed in the challenge you get the $600 back. I received an email asking me for feedback about the orientation, and i responded with: “It was really informative and the staff was very nice. However, i disagree with the approach you take regarding the money. You put 10 or so people in a room then ask for $600, which wasn’t hinted at in any of the forms or sign up sheets before you arrive (if it was, it was purposefully hidden). I get that “you can earn it back” by completing the challenge, but it still smells of deceit. Luckily, i really wanna do the program and have $600 to spare over the course of 6 weeks. In the future, i’d recommend you be more forthcoming. This will be going on my yelp review, my final review, and by word of mouth to all of my peers unless i see action taken.” Their response was that they don’t take any one on that feels this way. Bucktown crossfit has to hold themselves accountable instead of turning away naysayers. I will be seeking another program that is more upfront about what they offer. Less

As a long Crossfitter, I came back to Chicago in hopes of finding a gym to do crossfit, since I consider the ambiance etc its what its all about.. I know acrossfit is expensive.. I know that the upkeep of a gym is expensive.. but false advertissement is not the way to go. 1. The coach's explanation and power point was fantastic.. he seemed to know what he was talking.. even if I disagree on his views on ketosis. 2. Then, after the presentation... he told us we had to put down a deposit of 600 dollars to start the challenge (we could pay it howver we wanted in the first 4 weeks) but we had to put that down with the promise of getting a refund IF we reached the goals of losing 20 lbs or 5% fat in 6 weeks. I guess that if we didn't, then money is gone. 3. As an avid Crossfitter from gyms like Chicago Crossfit, Crossfit Chamberi (Madrid), Crossfit Montpellier, Crossfit Richmond (Melbourne), I found this extremely upsetting... I never ever put low ratings even if I don't agree with certain coaches et al.. but I don't agree with false advertisement and was extrenely upset when I found I either had to out down 600 bucks or get a 1 year membership. Where do I begin with Bucktown CrossFit? To say that the Six Week Challnge did not change me, even a little bit, would be entirely incorrect. From the six week course, I learned that my high hopes differed from my actions I was taking going into the challenge. Although I did not lose the full 20 pounds, I did lose weight and body fat. Every week I had to weigh myself and check my progress with my body fat percentage; I didn't get very far initially by just working out at Bucktown CrossFit. I realized that if I truly wanted to improve my health, I had to change my lifestyle by modifying more than just what I ate. After the 3-week call-in with my accountability coach, I recognized how unrealistic it was to expect results from only going to CrossFit three times a week. It was their minimum, and because transportation was a struggle for me, I began putting in the work on my own. At home, I started rising before the sun to run before school and when I would come home from work, I forced myself to do a physical activity for at least 60 minutes if I didn't go to CrossFit that day. Dietary-wise, I have never restricted myself in a meal before; I used to think it was okay on my body to skip meals and prior to this experience, I never really meal prepped before. Bucktown CrossFit demonstrated meal plans to follow. It was mentally challenging from the start, most people who were in this 6-week challenge probably shared the thought that progress never began "easy." What worked for me what having to write out my schedule weekly; between school and work I needed to make the time to eat three meals a day, I had to cut out certain foods when some people around me were not obligated to do the same, and I became reluctant by the second week to travel over two hours by public transportation from the Northwest Suburbs to Chicago. I wasn't okay with where I was then, and after a talk with a friend my mentality shifted. Bucktown CrossFit stressed proper form when doing workouts and the coaches here were not demeaning nor did they shoot students down when we had questions about the exercise or meals. I've talked with my peers about Bucktown CrossFit, and although we can all agree some of the coaches we encountered motivated us to keep going, I believe most of us are grateful for each of our peers that pushed and cheered each other in class. People are encouraging and welcoming, and everyone is in it together. The coaches are super great, as well, always showing how to perform the movements correctly before each wod. (Special shout out to Kim! She rocks.) There was one incident that sort of stuck with me, though, with a particular coach. One of the coaches was doing the wod with us and they skipped many reps each time just to get ahead.. it made me and a few other athletes pretty upset to see, considering this person was a trainer and should be setting an example. Otherwise, everyone was great! As far as the challenge itself. I did a bulking plan instead of a weight loss plan, so it was a lot of work on my own, but the crossfit classes helped me push myself. It really is what you put into it. I achieved my goal, which was to gain weight/muscle, but I also did some lifting outside of the gym, as well as playing rugby. I felt the nutrition planning was definitely great, especially if you don't know where to start. I was just hoping it would've been a little more individualized, but I also understand that, that would be hard to do with so many people. Overall, I think it's a great thing to start if you're looking to get healthy/lose weight and you need some direction! Less

However, I look back now on the first week and realize how much progress I have made in such a short period of time. I'm stronger, more coordinated, and faster. Not only do I feel different, I look different as well. I dropped 2 sizes in 6 weeks. At end of week 2, I became injured. I continued to go to the gym and the coaches all worked with me on modifying the workouts as to not over do it. Because of my injuries, I'm not sure if I will hit my goal tomorrow. The Flynn is nice and open. The coaches are great and motivate you. Jackie was my coach and she was great. I liked the accountability aspect. The diet was also a good part of the program and it was not very difficult to follow. The gym is dog friendly and that is one thing i did not like, but I must say that every dog that entered the gym was well trained and never got in the way of my workout or any workout area. I feel that aI am not where I want to be but so far I am loosing weight and I have gone down a dress size! I am excited about that. I plan to continue my journey from this point on the challenge was just what I needed to wake me up. The challenge does require a $600.00 down payment which is expensive but when you think about a personal trainer you would probably spend the same amount if not more. Do I feel I got my money’s worth? Yes, Do I think I won the challenge ? Don’t know? Would I so it again? Yes if the location was closer to my home! I do think they need to differentiate more when it comes to the weighted bag run, There were only 40lbs and 30lbs and sometime there where not enough 30lbs for me to get one to carry and I really struggled with the 40lbs! One word of advice, I am unsure of all the challenge rules about receiving your money back if you meet your goal or a partial goal. I suggest reading your contract or finding out all of the rules first. Less

Although I know I won’t get the refund, I gained so much more. I’ve learned so much about my eating and so much about what my body can do when I put my mind to it. All the couches are super motivating and attentive. The atmosphere at the gym is not like any one I have ever been to. Even the other people attending the gym are nice. I’ve enjoyed Bucktown CrossFit. Although the challenge is over the life style has just begun. Less

In addition to the instructor led workouts, we were given a detailed nutrition plan to follow, weekly check-ins with an accountability coach, and lots of encouragement/motivation from all the coaches. Every workout kicked our butts, but they were made to be challenging and fun(if you’re a glutton for punishment), and push you to the next level of strength. When I started I could barely do pull ups and now I can do 10+ no problem! Push ups for days, no problem! I now have so much muscle definition that I didn’t have previously(traps/lats/quads) and I love it! Every workout hurt so good but it was all worth it in the end! If you’re serious about changing your body and life, look no further than Bucktown Crossfit! Much love to JT, Matt, Jackie, Jason, Taylor, and all the BTCF fam! Less

Join this gym! After finishing a 20-year wrestling career, I got lazy and took the following SIX YEARS off of working out and eating healthy. I had tried to go to the gym a few times over the years and that worked, for about a week, when it then became all too easy to just not go. It was difficult to stay motivated when going to the gym alone, especially coming from the background of always working out with a team. Fast forward those six years and it finally became time to make a change in my life. I had ballooned up and was starting to feel the effects of that on my body. After coming across the 6-week challenge online, I decided to give it a chance. The results are literally life changing. I have lost over 25 pounds in those six weeks, but more importantly, regained the motivation to life a healthy lifestyle. The community at this gym is incredible. Reasons why I give this place 5 stars: People: All of the coaches are amazing, funny, knowledgeable and passionate about what they do. Energy: Everyone who is here likes what they are doing (duh, otherwise you wouldnt make it) but even still, the people who aren't the crossfit "type" are successful because this is such a high-energy vibe. Facilities: All of their systems are in place. Meaning: logging/checking in/payment/notifications are all there and easy. The actual gym is always clean and non-smelly. <-- love this! Other: I did the diet/program as well and honestly, it rebooted my whole system. I have NEVER -repeat- NEVER lived my life without cheese. Not eating cheese or peanut butter WITH apples was harder than not drinking for 6 weeks. As someone who is picky about the situations that she gets in, I am 100% pleased with this place and what I have gotten out of it. It is truly a community and worth your time. Less

If you told me 2 months ago that I'd be doing crossfit, loving it, AND losing weight, I'd call you a liar. I had no previous crossfit experience and really started this challenge at the bottom- with no base of strength, endurance, anything. But here I am, at the end of the challenge and I'm so pleasantly surprised by the results!! There are two main parts this challenge, the workouts and the meal plan. The first day or two definitely kicked my butt, but the coaches and people in the class really make it bearable and then before you know it, you're seeing progress! Even the hardest movements get a little bit easier with determination and practice. The other part of this challenge is the meal plan, and it's no small feat. As daunting as it seems, the meal plan is a great reset for healthy and nutritious eating. I looooove my carbs, loooove my processed foods and such, but really I knew that I needed to change my habits for the better, and this meal plan was very straight forward and easy to follow, as long as you stayed disciplined. I saw and felt results within the first week and that showed me that the plan is worth sticking to. If you're considering this challenge, go for it! You truly don't know what you're capable of until you try it, and I'm so glad I did. Less

Literally everything about this place is awesome. I did the 6 week challenge and I absolutely loved every day of it. From day one all the way to the end of the challenge. The staff and fellow members always made me feel very welcomed(shout out to my coaches Matt, JT, Jackie, Kim). They always pushed me to give it 110%. Even when I thought I was done, no gas left in the tank. Their words of encouragement always helped me push past what I thought was my threshold. They always made me feel like they wanted me to genuinely get better. The atmosphere at this place made me want to come back again and again. No matter how sore or tired I was. The hardest part of the challenge for me was the nutrition. But if you actually follow it 100%(no cheat days) you will reach your goal and you will definitely see results. For the first 2 weeks I was actually doing the nutrition plan wrong and was over eating. But once I spoke Donna (the nutritionist) who is also a badass, we figured out the problem(don't eat carbs for dinner duh). After that I started seeing almost immediate results. If you are tried of the gym scene where you go and you are on your own day in and day out. Sometimes not knowing what you are doing, It gets difficult to stay motivated and keep going. That was my issue for a very long time. Finding a training partner that fits your schedule and is dependable was also really difficult to find. But at Bucktown Crossfit there is always someone to workout with that is going to push you to your limits. That wants you to be better. The things I am able to do after only 6 weeks almost baffles me. I am capable of doing so much more than I ever thought I would. I have signed up for a year long membership because this place is so amazing and the results I have achieved. If you genuinely want to get in the best shape of your life and are willing to do things you probably have never done before. Take the 6 week challenge. Its far from easy, but if you are dedicated and consistent and always give it your all. You wont be disappointed. Less

I’ve gone through phases where I have worked out in the past, and I currently play rec soccer, but I just came to a point recently where I was frustrated with how out of shape I had become and how poorly my eating had been. Enter Bucktown CrossFit. Matt is a great on ramp coach. He is patient and expects the absolute best out of everyone, while also not pushing you too hard to the point you hurt yourself. As a teacher I value good teaching, and I recognize the scaffolding that takes place to meet everyone’s ability levels. I never in a million years pictured myself doing Olympic-style weight lifting, but here I am! The diet was definitely the most difficult part, but I stuck to it. My weigh out is tomorrow and so far I have lost 15 pounds and 4.6% body fat. I’ve also gone down a pant size, a dress size, and a bra size. I’m most excited about the skill set I’ve gained and look forward to continuing building my strength. One suggestion would be to research more protein sources for vegetarians. I eat fish thankfully as a pescatarian, but if I didn’t I think I would get very sick of the meager 6 choices. Vegans have even less choices. So that’s just a suggestion for the future. Less

Other coaches and professionals at the gym that I took classes or consulted with formally and informally were typically helpful. Bucktown Crossfit's industrial-style, open space is very nice and modern and offers a wide range of workout possibilities. No fancy amenities here. Just the essentials for intense exercise. I gotta say I was pretty skeptical at first, but I’ll try anything once. “Don’t knock til you try it”, right? Through this six week challenge it’s been pretty eye opening. I think that the staff does a great job of not overworking people and does all the things necessary to make sure no one gets injured. [Posting this again as it seems to not be showing up] So just to clarify here, I'm going by what the stars represent in the description...3="Good." That's how I would describe it. Not quite "very good" or "excellent" but definitely worth checking out and see if it's your thing. Also, to set expectations, I'm completely new to CrossFit and Olympic style lifting. But I have trained various styles from boxing (proper boxing, not TITLE) to rugby to bodybuilding. I'm writing this review because it's mandatory as part of the 6-Week Challenge. The 6-Week Challenge...What is It? - 6 weeks. 3 workouts per week - 3 weeks of onboarding where there's a ton of focus on form - Pay $600 upfront. If you lose 20 lbs or 5% body fat you get it back or can apply it to monthly rates if you continue. Was told during the intro meeting by JT that partially meeting the goals would result in a partial refund, though I'm interested to see if this is honored - Check in on facebook each time you go for a workout - Write a public review prior to your weigh-out Instruction (5 stars) - This was great! I've heard so many stories of people like me hopping in a CrossFit class, being told to do massive power cleans without any explanation of what that is, then tearing off a shoulder. - First 3 weeks were dedicated to an "on-ramp" where we spent significant class time learning proper form for all of the different lifts and exercises Workouts (3.5 stars) - Perhaps it's just that I'm new to CrossFit, but a workout that only lasts 9-15 minutes, regardless of how high intensity, is not really an efficient use of an hour (plus travel and early arrival). Doing that 3x per week is also not enough to hit a goal of losing 5% body fat. - We'd typically have 20 minutes of SUPER light warmup (e.g. stretching and high knees) followed by 20 minutes of going through the upcoming workout - I think going forward I'll likely get my lifting done then work in a WOD for my end of workout cardio Nutrition (2 stars) - This for me was the deal breaker. At 156 lbs and 20.8% body fat I didn't need to lose 20 lbs but did want to lose the body fat. My meal plan (one of three variations handed out on a sheet of paper during an intro nutrition session) consisted of about 1,300 calories with macros 50% protein, 25% carb and 25% fat. Given that I also did 3 days of serious lifting on non-CrossFit days, calorie restriction simply isn't going to work for my specific body composition goals. - Rather than up the calories to facilitate a change in body composition, I stuck with the BTCF nutrition plan since that's what I signed up for. Not surprisingly, I had losses during the first two weeks as my body adjusted to a low-carb diet then plateaued for the next month. I definitely look and feel better, but definitely didn't reach the gains in strength or muscle that proper nutrition would have fueled. - Sorry folks, 3 meal plans can't possibly cover the range of people and goals we had in the cohort. Everyone from 250+ lbs workout newbies to 105 lbs people who have worked out but had difficulty putting on weight and getting strong. (On a side note, that diversity made classes really fun, and made for a great sense of camaraderie) - That said, we all know that nutrition and simply having healthy habits gets you 80% of the way. If you were one of the folks who needed a transformation this would actually probably work very well! Instructors / Staff (4 stars) - We had Matt during the ramp-up and he was great! Always patient and instructional but also motivating and kept up the intensity. Pushed people to get into the "give it your all and support your fellow athletes" spirit - Definitely a good sense of community. Lifting coaches would come up and help out with form, CrossFit instructors made sure to float around class and either give tips or just help motivate. - The "accountability" role of checking in once a week is something I could take or leave. Not sure how much value it added, but maybe I'm just a low-maintenance guy. Facilities (3-4 stars) - I think pretty standard for a CrossFit gym and I wasn't expecting a 4+ star experience in a warehouse. Big and airy was good though, as it was nice to not be working out in a little studio. - I showered in the mornings. Saw someone else's post about cold water and I never had that problem. All in all, a positive but mediocre experience. I think a little more personalized service and some more strength training time would have gone a long way and aren't too much to ask for a $600 commitment. I learned a ton and honestly the money was nearly worth the coaching on Olympic lifts alone. So where do I stand? I'm anywhere from 15.5% - 17.8% body fat depending on the time of day. A bit short of the goal. I'll update this review to share how the final weigh-out discussion went and update on whether or not I get a pro-rated portion of that back or applied to future membership. Will I continue? Most likely, I'll take away the great learning on a new style of lifting and incorporate that into my workouts. Will get back on a better fuel plan and use this good base as the jumping off point for the next phase of health. Thanks! Less
Just finishing the 6-week challenge. I never really worked out before this and it kicked my butt. The results were amazing. I lost weight, body fat, feel better inside and look better from the outside. Pushes you hard but it helped me change my lifestyle in a fun easily approachable format.

I attended the 5:30am class and loved getting the workout out of the way before work. When we first stated out, we were part of an on-ramp class. I could only attend three classes per week. I felt like after the first week it would have been nice to be able to attend more than three classes. It was nice to get introduced to everything; however, I felt like three weeks was too long. The coaches there are really nice and answered my one and a million questions. They push me to levels that I didn’t know I could reach. I didn’t agree with all the instruction’s coaching style. That didn’t stop me from going. Some of the coaches seemed stuck up and as if they were better than those that were new. I didn’t let it get to me and just used it as motivation. The six weeks did go by fast and has taught me so much. This program has taught me be creative in the kitchen and challenge myself to not always over eat. I know that after being done with the challenge I will instill certain habits that I have created over the six weeks. I have my weight out tomorrow so I don’t know what my results are but I am pretty excited. Thanks Bucktown Crossfit for your help to getting fit and becoming a better me. Less

I believe the 6 week challenge worked for many people, but the generic meal plan may not be for everyone. If you do have questions you can ask Donna who is the nutritionist and is very nice. The 6 week challenge is not for everyone, everyone has the same exact goal no matter your gender, weight, or fitness level which is not practical or fair. I followed the plan and it didn’t work for me although it did work for others. You will lose your entire deposit though if you don’t meet the goal (no leniency) so if you do it make sure it’s the right choice for you! Less

My advice for someone considering the 6 week challenge is, think what is best for you. I only lost 3 lbs in 6 weeks and I worked really hard! I did two a day workouts and basically starved myself the last week. Followed the diet to a T, until the last week i did a millirary diet and lost 5 lbs. I do dont blame the coaches. If you have alot to lose than this is the challenge for you but body fat is Exstremely hard to lose and 20 lbs is me being anorexic, not idea. I would have rather put my money towards a month to month or a membersship instead of throwing $600 at a six week challenge that has deadlines and demands that are not realistic for most people. I will say though, it definitely pushed me to work out, to make time for myself. If you are considering the 6 week challenge, think about it first. If these are realistic goals that your body can meet. Maybe a month to month or a membership is better fit with less demands, longer time for your body to react to the changes. Think of it this way, a gym membership is 250 a month, you can get eight weeks for hundred dollars less or 12 weeks if you spend 150 more. Less
Awesome gym. Amazing people. The workouts push you to extremes you never though you’d go to, but I love it. Highly recommend Bucktown Crossfit!
Moving to Chicago in September, some of my fitness routines started to slack. I then found out about Bucktown CrossFit. The 6 week challenge was just what I needed to get back on track! The atmosphere at the gym is great and it really is a great community of people. I decided I will be continuing with Bucktown even after the 6 weeks! Fit as Buck!

It was pretty hard for me to keep up with the diet but they really were helping me out the whole time and checking up on me which was good. I want to start out by saying I was the person driving by crossfit gyms watching the people workout thinking "you people are frickin NUTS!" I'm now one of those people that are in the gym working my ass off 3-4 times a week. I started with the 6 week challenge and got incredible results. You have to follow the guidelines and work hard in class, but you WILL see results. I hadn't stepped into a gym in 18 years, am in my 40's, and overweight. Gyms and the people in them intimidated me. From the start, everyone from the staff to the other members were welcoming and encouraging. We had to modify some of the moves because I simply couldn't do them. JT never let me get down on myself, and just kept telling me to keep going. She and Matt knew exactly when I was starting to "hit my wall" and kept motivating me-even when I snarled at them. I have never been to a place where other class members stick around when they are done with their workout to encourage the others that are still going. There's always high fives and fist bumps and congratulations being passed around after class. The sense of "we are in this together" goes from the newbies to the ones that I watched incredulously my first few weeks, amazed by what they were doing. I'm going to be one of the incredulous ones. It may take me six months, a year, or even 2 years....but I'm going to do it. I cant thank everyone at Bucktown Crossfit enough for literally changing my life. I owe you everything!!! Less

I signed up for BTCF 6 week challenge with an open mind and agreed to the terms of the BTCF 6 week challenge (Lose 20 lbs or 5% Body fat along with a meal plan, social media expectations, and a written review). Prior to the challenge, I eat clean and did some cardio here and there. At the end of the challenge I learned a lot about how to properly lift weights and worked with equipment that I normally wouldn't use. Due to the Crossfit classes, I now feel confident to go beyond the cardio equipment and work with heavy weights. I can proudly hold my own. I was also able to meet some great people and have fun. I haven't done my final weigh-in to see if I officially hit the challenge goal. As it stands today, I lost 17 lbs and 7% body fat. It feels great to see those results and want to continue with weight lifting. *Disclaimer* I don't want to misled anyone and claim my results are 100% from Bucktown Crossfit classes. They aren't. During the challenge, I did an additional workouts every night which was outside of the crossfit classes provided - Two-a-Days. My daily routine during the 6 week challenge included attending the 5:30am Bucktown Crossfit class then every night I went to my own gym and completed a weight-lifting program followed by 45 minutes of intense cardio. I felt I had to double my workouts in order to see results at the end of the challenge which I did. The 3 week Ramp-up only allowed 3 crossfit workouts a week which wasn't much of a workout because we were focused on how to lift weights. I rate the instructional training during Ramp-up as excellent. I learned a lot and want to continue weight-lifting. I rate overall experience a 3 because my results are not primarily from Bucktown Crossfit. There is a lot of potential for this program and areas for improvement. Less

The coaches modified exercises to my capabilities but also pushed me just as hard as everyone else. This challenge has taught me discipline and how to eat right. The meal plan was so easy to follow and having the nutritionist available to us helped me stay on track. Inclusively, it was really great to have an accountability coach monitor my progress weekly and offer advice or suggestions on how to improve. I'm not going to lie, the dieting was harder for me than the actual work outs. You are in control of how much weight you want to add/take out to your workouts, and it isn't about competing with your classmates but about improving your own work out from week to week. All in all the gym itself is a great community and everyone is very welcoming to new members. I would highly suggest doing to 6-week challenge if you want to push yourself to get back into exercising. Less
