I completed the online training from DRE today and I just want to write a few words to explain what a fantastic day's training it was.I live on a fairly remote island, and attending in person for training such as this normally requires extra expense in terms of time and money so I cannot express how fabulous it is that the course 'came to me' for a change! The course is divided into a little self directed learning, a hands on (but remote) practical day to learn the basics and a series of webinars that follow to develop your skills further. This is the first time I have done a practical course like this remotely. I was sent my DRE kit in advance, along with a set of pre-preped model teeth, and Sunny went through what he wanted me to do on zoom, and I followed his instructions. I was able to send him photos of my work on WhatsApp, and he would annotate them with suggestions of how to improve what I was doing. It was an incredibly satisfying way to do a practical course! I want to reassure anyone concerned that far from 'missing out' on an in-person class, there are a number of genuine advantages to this style of training. Firstly, you have protected one-to-one training time with Sunny which is just not possible even in a small group session. Secondly, there isn't the pressure to 'keep up' with the group, as there can sometimes be in a practical class - it's just you so if you need to do practice something several times to get the hang of it then you can. He is also able to tailor the session to your particular needs as a clinician as well, which was so valuable (we had a great discussion about replicating occlusal anatomy of posterior teeth more predictably, for example). And lastly, the lack of travel time, certainly for me, allowed me to take on board much more than I would normally as I wasn't as tired as I usually am- fourteen hours overnight on a ferry is not something to be taken lightly! The at home learning is broken down into bite size chunks and I was able to complete it before the hands on training day. It was well pitched and offered a mix of revision and new learning. It's also important to note that using greater taper bands is quite nuanced and certainly I probably would have struggled to use them in clinic if I hadn't been on the course. It's a super technique, but to get the most out of it, you need a tutor. Sunny is your man!Now I've completed the hands on training there are more webinars to come which I'm really looking forward to, and a little community of new users which I will get to join. The DRE kit you are sent is really comprehensive, and I'm especially looking forward to trying out the bur set as well as the bands. I can tell I'm going to need more retainers and bands already though!I would say to anyone thinking about doing the online course to definitely give it a try- learning a new skill keeps us young, and improves our clinical abilities - and this is a brilliant way to do it! I was really proud of the restorations I managed to place, and although I have a long way to go, I'm excited about getting started!
