Specialty Fence

We had SpecialtyFence install a brand new fence a little over five years ago, and unfortunately my experience from start to finish has been extremely frustrating. Before the installation even began, it took nearly two months for the company to obtain the permit needed to start the project. The delay happened because SpecialtyFence said they were waiting for the village to contact them. When I finally called the village myself, I discovered the permit had actually been ready for quite some time. I ended up having to pick up the permit myself because they said they were too busy, even though they originally told me they would handle that process.Visually, the fence itself still looks great from a distance. The stained wood has held its color well and still has a nice red tone. However, there were clear shortcuts taken during installation. According to our contract, the fence caps were supposed to be made from the same stained wood as the fence, but instead they used cheap untreated wood. Many of the caps don’t even fit properly and are wider than the posts. The biggest ongoing problem has been the gate. Almost from the beginning it has either been extremely difficult to use or completely non-functional. Two of the horizontal beams were cut too long, and during seasonal weather changes the wood expands and prevents the gate from closing. To make matters worse, the hinges were installed upside down. Last year the hinge pins actually fell out, leaving me stuck replacing the hinges myself.Initially they also installed a very cheap gate latch that didn’t even have a handle on the outside, making it difficult to open. I asked them to replace it with something more appropriate for a brand new fence. They did install a new latch, but only after I purchased the hardware myself.Even with the replacement latch, the gate was installed so tightly against the post that it has always been a struggle to close. Now the gate will not close at all no matter how much pressure is applied. At this point I’m forced to find another fence company to come out and either adjust or completely replace the gate that SpecialtyFence installed. If you want a fence that looks nice from a distance, this company might deliver that. But if you want a fence that is properly installed, functional, and built to last, I would strongly recommend looking elsewhere.
