I come in last every single time. Every warm-up, every workout, every competition.
This week we did a 10-round workout for time. We had to do some push-ups, rope climbs, and some weird squat thing I don't even remember the name of. I hadn't done a rope climb before, so the coach helped me out before the class started and gave me some 1 on 1 coaching until I was able to do my first one! I was feeling pretty excited and confident about the workout.
That confidence didn't make it past my 3rd round. My friend was on his 6th and I couldn't finish my rope climb for the round. I scaled it down to keep going and noticed people finishing around my 5th round. The rest finished on my 7th.
Coaches and class members alike encouraged me and helped me count my reps. Everyone was invested in my success, helping me in whatever ways they could. Someone refilled my water. Someone held the box I was doing push ups on. Someone slapped my butt.
I finished my 10 rounds to lots of claps on the back and then hurriedly wiping my sweat off their hands. "Good job, Scott"s and "Nice hustle, Ogden"s abounded.
I was a little embarrassed at the attention. I'd rather just work out in ignominy and hide in the back of the class. But CrossFit Renew is about community.
It's about investing in each person's success. Both coaches and members watching out for each other. It's a place to learn, to train, to perfect. A place where everybody knows your name and they're always glad you came.
It's okay if you come in last at CrossFit Renew, because, with a community like this, you always feel like a winner.
