Two generations of our family have been served by Berg Mortuary and Brady took the time to pull all their files when it was time for our dad’s funeral. The reception and funeral service rooms at Berg Mortuary on Provo's Center Street I know well, largely as a result of attending many viewings and services (even speaking at some) there. The vague sense of someday using those spaces personally sharpened unexpectedly when my wife died. Her death at home brought an immediate response from paramedics and police officers. Approximately 90 minutes after arriving, nearly all of them had returned to their duties otherwise. A detective remained and soon confirmed that the state medical examiner's office had given permission to request the removal of my wife's body by a mortuary staff. With his departure, only a police sergeant was present. I phoned Berg Mortuary to inform them of my wife's death and to request that they remove her body and thence care for it prior to viewings, a funeral service, and a graveside service at the cemetery. I asked them to proceed with the pertinent planning and scheduling. Two members of the Berg staff--a woman and a man--soon arrived in a minivan and, in a short time, had transported my wife's body using a collapsible gurney into the van. I provided the information they requested and thanked them. I also thanked the police sergeant for his cordial company prior to his departure. My wife and I had decided some time ago that, regardless of which one of us died before the other, we would turn the particulars of the ensuing notices, gatherings, and memorializing entirely to our children. In short order, they came together, first digitally across distant time zones, then in person accompanied by their families. Their primary allies through the welter of decision making and event planning that followed were the original two staff members from Berg Mortuary whose knowing manner, unassuming attentiveness, and consistent thoughtfulness assured a deeply moving, richly memorable marking of a loving and beloved life.
