Being in my mid-seventies and wishing to attempt to sing for the first time since junior school I was very apprehensive on where or how to find out if it was possible. I had 6 months to achieve my target of singing a special song to my daughter at her wedding. Having searched online several times I kept going back to the Sing with Style web site as I was impressed with the variation and option of an introductory course at a reasonable cost. I nervously made the call and having explained what my target was I made my first appointment with Selena. I had no idea what to expect but was soon put at ease by Selena as she explained what we would be going through in the next hour and then we would make a decision on what was the best way to progress. During that session I was surprised how much variation of movement, stature, vocal and body exercises can make a difference to the pitch and reach of your voice. It became obvious to us both after that first hour that I was going to need more tuition. Selena was very clear in explaining what I would have to practice on and showed me various vocal and physical exercises that I would have to do if I wanted to progress. Having carried out six further lessons we came to an understanding that although I had gained in confidence and there was some improvement, I was not going to be proficient at singing. Having Selena's support, we decided the way to progress was to just concentrate on the song I wanted to sing at my daughter’s wedding. By now I knew that ‘singing’ was not in my nature but as long as I could make a decent effort then it was worth continuing with Selena’s help and encouragement. After a short break we continued for a further four meetings during which time Selena prepared me to sing the song I had selected. I also listened and practiced the song every day and on our final session we recorded my version so that it could be played as I danced with my daughter at her wedding. I have a great amount of appreciation for Selena and would not hesitate in recommending her as a tutor. She has extreme musical knowledge, is sympathetic, with lots of patience and a pleasure to be with. I looked for a singing teacher and Selena’s course seemed to be offering all I was looking for. The classes were great fun and I felt supported and encouraged by Selena, and the other participants, but never felt too individually conspicuous, which would have put me off at that stage of my singing journey. There was a good balance of technical learning, practice and playful group singing. I felt both my confidence and abilities grow through the course. Through her clear teaching I discovered so much I never knew was there, and most importantly I've been able to apply it directly. Very quickly I was able to start banishing the thin nasal voice I'd always felt I was stuck with, giving way to a richer tone that I can control but still sounds like "me". My bad habits have gone and have been replaced by a confidence in my voice that has opened up doors to jamming, performing, and - most nerve-wracking of all - singing in front of family members. Through her clear teaching I discovered so much I never knew was there, and most importantly I've been able to apply it directly. Very quickly I was able to start banishing the thin nasal voice I'd always felt I was stuck with, giving way to a richer tone that I can control but still sounds like "me". My bad habits have gone and have been replaced by a confidence in my voice that has opened up doors to jamming, performing, and - most nerve-wracking of all - singing in front of family members. When I tried to sing along to my favourite songs it was pretty clear that I was doing something wrong but I had no idea how to do it right. Clearly I needed help. It took a bit of a leap of faith to start working with Selena but I 'm glad I did it. She knows her stuff in the arena of music theory, backed by plenty of experience, as well as understanding the surprisingly intricate physiology of the human voice and the psychology of learning. Most importantly she understands the Goldilocks balance of just enough challenge and just enough comforting and support. Most importantly she was always nice and never made me feel bad for being a terrible singer! To begin with she taught me how to use my vocal instrument, which was interesting and fun and revealed many of the bad habits that I'd somehow picked up over the course of a lifetime. I spent a lot of time working on tone matching or singing in tune, as it is more commonly called. This had always been my Achilles heel and finally addressing it brought me the kind of growing confidence that can only come from growing competence. It's still very much a work in progress but where as before I knew I was doing it all wrong but didn't know how to fix it, I now have a clear sense of direction and have a number of tools at my disposal. I won't be performing at the Albert Hall any time soon but I now enjoying singing with my girlfriend and working out how to sing along with my favourite songs in a way that I find both pleasant and engaging. I recently did Selena's online course, the Confident Singer Masterclass because I hadn't sung for a while and had got very rusty. Also I really wanted to polish my technique so I could do more professional performances with my storytelling shows. Since I've done the course I can reach the full range of my voice including the higher register which I had really been struggling with. The warm ups and techniques have really helped with my shallow breathing and breathy voice so I can now sustain notes with more resonance and projection.. My voice also used to crack when moving between the registers and I’ve overcome that problem too. Now I feel I CAN call myself a singer. I feel more confident, more able to take on gigs and performance opportunities. I can rely on my voice, so I feel happier. The course was not only useful and informative but also fun. It was a lovely group of singers too and we all supported one another during the sessions and with online buddy meet ups to work on our singing together. It was amazing how Selena could tune into individual people’s needs over Zoom. She could see where each person was struggling and give them personalised recommendations to help them do better. The posture, breathing work and just really getting into the joy of singing has had a positive impact on my health and wellbeing. Overall it has been an empowering course, it has stretched me and my capabilities and I’ve got a stronger voice than I ever had before. Last night I attended the Final Concert of Selena's 12-week online course, the Confident Singer Masterclass. I went as an audience member to listen to her students' performances. It was really great! Beautiful voices, lovely songs. You could tell that they had had good training for their voices. The singing wasn't simple - it was intricate, rich, and powerful. I was impressed!

I am not an expereinced singer, and wanted to learn to sing Happy Birthday confidently as it isn't something you can mime when with friends! I had a singing lesson with Selena, and she gave me confidence to learn to relax when singing and helped me to pitch my voice better. She really listens to what your goals are and helps you to achieve them.

Selena's singing workshop on 29 March was excellent. We covered a lot in 2 hours including singing techniques, a song and had a companion booklet summarising everything, including the 5 essential tools for powerful singing, some of which I learnt in her 1:1 singing courses. Thank you Selena.

I had a number of singing lessons from Selena from 2018 to 2020. The specific improvements I achieved was to carry my voice for longer and to use my mouth to sing certain sounds. I learnt a lot of exercises to improve my voice. The experience of lessons I enjoyed were improving my songs by learning to project my voice. I had a number of singing lessons from Selena from 2018 to 2020. The specific improvements I achieved was to carry my voice for longer and to use my mouth to sing certain sounds. I learnt a lot of exercises to improve my voice. The experience of lessons I enjoyed were improving my songs by learning to project my voice.
