In addition to being 20 pounds over my average weight I was winded most days going up stairs, sore in my joint areas & having extreme pain on my right side when sleeping at night. Restless and anxious was my daily. In five weeks I'm happy to report I sleep through the night, I don't get winded going up and down stairs, definition has returned to most of my upper body and I was able to zip that dress for my good friends wedding this past weekend February 24th. Huw is a great trainer. Huw knows how to motivates me but also understands my limitations. He makes the most out of my workouts by making each of my workouts challenging but also rewarding. I have never been a fan of going to the gym. However, I feel very comfortable at Function Fitness 360. Huw is great to work with and is a huge encouragement in support of meeting my health and fitness goals.

I have enjoyed working out with Huw and even more importantly, am seeing results in my level of fitness which is really exciting. He pushes enough to get me to do more than I would otherwise but not so hard that I’m exhausted the rest of the day or sore following work outs. He’s fun to work with and I’ve met some other really fun work out buddies as well.

If you want more information about why; you can read my lengthy gushing praise below. I never committed time to “functional” exercise. I always filled my time with activities that I enjoyed. I have been active throughout my life and convinced myself that was sufficient. As I aged, I realized “activity” is good, but flexibility, muscle fitness, and cardio endurance need more than just being “active.” I lost endurance, balance, and developed weaknesses in my over muscle mass. Eventually, I found it harder to do the “activities” I wanted to do. I knew I needed functional exercise and told myself… every Sunday… tomorrow I am going to take time to follow an exercise program. I printed many routines and bought some books…. Needless to say, many Mondays past with good intentions, but no follow-through. I never enjoyed the gym membership route. It was just added travel time to the exercise time I was already avoiding. I knew I had reached a point that I needed guidance and help. I found Functional Fitness 360 and Huw. Amazing. I will never “enjoy” taking time to exercise. However, Huw has coached me in a manner that makes exercise doable, beneficial… and during the time I am being coached - very gratifying. Most valuable, as any soreness or heath related issues occur, Huw is very knowledgeable/skilled and can make adjustments to my workout so I don’t make something worse. He can substitute movements that heal, not hurt. I am committed to improving my health with exercise. Huw has managed to reform me into a believer… and adds needed motivation when necessary. My name is Helen Zimmerman. I am 77 years old, and I live in North Raleigh. I have been training with Huw Meyrick for 2 years and when he opened Functional Fitness 360 in Zebulon, I said “Ok, I will see you Thursday afternoon.” The cornerstones of the workouts at Functional Fitness 360 are flexibility, balance, mobility, form, endurance, and strength. “Rolling out” on the foam roller for flexibility helps to get rid of those pesky back aches that I thought I would always have. Proper balance and mobility are parts of every movement in the workouts planned by Huw Meyrick at Functional Fitness 360 – his coaching is extremely exacting as to the detail of proper positioning. This is how Huw teaches proper form. I am not a 77-year-old looking for the “fountain of youth.” I know that Functional Fitness 360 is what we all need. It is made for all ages, including 77-year-old persons. It is made up of Squats – which get old folks like me into and out of chairs – and other necessary movements; Balance, which guards against falls in the first place and certainly assists one if she/he does fall. (I like to say that I “bounce” if I should fall – where would I be if I lost that ability?); and, Mobility, which allows for kneeling on one knee – commonly called a “lunge” (which I could not do before training with Huw). I am a self-described “gym-rat”. I started strength training when I was 50 and did CROSSFIT for 12 years, starting at 64. When the gyms re-opened after the pandemic had lessened, I started training with Huw in order to gain my strength back more quickly. I had gone back to the CROSSFIT gym and been training with Huw for about a year when I hurt my back. My back injury was a serious strain (I couldn’t walk at all for a week, and then had to walk in the swimming pool as part of the PT routine). My Doctor gave me pain medication and muscle relaxants; I saw a Physical Therapist for 6 weeks; and Huw fine-tuned his exercise routine for me in collaboration with the Physical Therapist. All of this to get me back to a normal exercise routine. Not only is Huw a great coach; he can serve as a partner with the medical profession to get us and keep us in top form physically. So, this is why I drive 35 minutes each way to train with my Coach, Huw Meyrick, at Functional Fitness 360. Meaning I’m in it for the long haul – I look at Huw Meyrick not only as my Personal Trainer – but my Life Coach. I feel that I can share with him and get guidance not just about my fitness, but my husband’s surgery, my problems with my eyes requiring surgery, my anxiety issues requiring medication, my responsibilities with my volunteer work, etc. etc. All of these other things affect my physical being, and the best way to deal with it is to realize it’s all one package. You are so lucky to have Functional Fitness 360 in Zebulon. I have recommended Huw Meyrick to all of my friends, and I recommend him as a Trainer/Coach to everyone who cares deeply about their physical fitness. Just not at 1:00 p.m. on Thursday afternoons. I love coming here! The atmosphere is great and Huw is an amazing trainer! I feel as if the goals I set for myself are closer now that I have been attending classes here. The 360 shred class can be pretty intense but it's fun. I also love the fact that though the sessions I attend are semi-personal, I still feel as if Huw gives me all the attention I need.

Huw is a wonderful trainer who takes into consideration how your body and mind both feel each time you work out which I appreciate. Plus, the classes are small, so Huw is able to help each person individually. Also, he is very patient and explains each workout thoroughly. Even when I don’t do something right several times, Huw stops to explain it to me as many times as I need. Unlike other gyms I have been to, it is not an intimidating environment, and I don’t feel judged if I have to slow down. The workouts are challenging, but I don’t feel like I’m working myself to death, and there is a variety of workouts. I don’t dread showing up to the gym like I have before and that is because of the way Huw goes about his workouts. I also enjoy the stretches that come along with each workout a lot. WOW!!! Had my first class with Huw this evening. I could tell a difference in my back, pelvis, and upper thighs walking out of the studio. My whole posture changed from just that one session!! I am more upright when I walk, my pelvis and back feel straight and not rotated. I didn’t realize they were before, but can tell now that my whole movement is different and more natural. Tried it when I got home … without realizing it, the different motion with my arms created a different, better, and more efficient movement in my legs and feet. It changed everything! I was recovering from ankle replacement surgery and trying to get back into shape, primarily for playing golf. Huw was excellent at listening to my needs and concerns, and he developed a plan for me to not only improve my strength, flexibility and balance for golf, but for everyday activities. He was also very willing to listen to the things my golf instructor was telling me, and he worked with me on specific exercises and stretches to get my body better able to move the way my instructor wanted. Huw is also knowledgeable regarding diet and helped me modify some of my eating habits to get me as healthy as possible. In addition, we had great conversations about the mental aspects of sports and how best to reach my potential. I highly recommend Huw as a trainer and partner in pursuing your fitness goals. Less

Prior to finding Functional Fitness I struggled with my weight and figuring out what exercises were right for my health goals. My weight has gradually been increasing since my 20’s despite my best efforts to exercise. I have worked with trainers before as well as tried working out on my own, and am familiar with different types of exercise. One of my biggest challenges in exercising is starting and hurting myself because the exercises I am familiar with aren’t right for where my body is currently. It became a discouraging cycle. After meeting with Huw for my strategy session I felt cautiously optimistic. I wanted to believe Functional Fitness had a new, better approach for me. The questions asked and the evaluation he walked me through seemed to echo exactly how I was feeling. A few days later I had my first training session. It was wonderful! I felt like Huw met me where I am. He targeted the same muscle groups that I knew needed work, but in a different way. A way that works for where my fitness level can handle right now. I left feeling like I had worked out, but not hurt myself. I left feeling strong and encouraged that I can continue on this journey and actually attain my health goals! Less
