Mary is probably my favorite coach and one of my favorite people at CrossFit. She was actually one of the reasons I got convinced that I could really enjoy CrossFit.I still remember being really impressed by the way she did the warm-ups and stretches. It felt like there was a purpose behind everything instead of just rushing into the workout, and that made a big impression on me early on.What I appreciate most about Mary is how closely she pays attention. She notices the weights I use, remembers what I did the last time, and knows when I should stay where I am or when it’s time for me to scale up. Sometimes she remembers my numbers better than I do 😁. She watches my form too and catches little things without me having to ask. She even noticed the shoes I was lifting in, explained why something flatter would be better, and suggested what I should look for. I never asked her about my shoes — she just noticed. That pretty much sums up Mary as a coach. She is also really good at giving me alternatives when a movement is difficult, but she doesn’t let the alternative become permanent. She helps me scale it, work on it, and eventually learn the actual movement properly. And then there is Mary as a fellow student. That might be my favorite part. She is genuinely inspiring to watch. When she is working out beside us, she is one of those people who makes you think, “Okay, I want to be able to do that someday.”So for me, Mary is both someone I really trust as a coach and someone I look up to as an athlete. She has been a big part of why I’ve come to enjoy CrossFit as much as I do, and I’m really glad I got to learn from her.
