I have received acupuncture treatments and taken chinese herbal medicine for over 20+ years in different countries and from acupuncturists from different backgrounds (Korean, Chinese, American, German, Italian) so I feel that I have a good sense of what a "good" acupuncturist should be like. I found Dr Nan via google and based on the overall 4.9 rating, I saw her on March 13 to address a headache that wouldn't go away and the feeling that I was getting a headcold. The 1 star rating is based on the following: 1) Her bedside manner is abrupt, abrasive and pushy. I am used to speaking with Asians who are non-native English speakers (I am a first gen Korean) and understand that their tone of voice can sound harsh and rude when speaking English. However, she asks you a question - why are you here? but doesn't let you finish a sentence and starts throwing her analysis of what's ailing you without really talking/listening to you. I filled out 3 pages of paperwork which I don't think she even read, she looked at my tongue from a foot away and didn't take my pulse. As others mentioned in reviews - she won't stop pushing chinese herbs on you. She asked me 3x if I wanted to take herbs and 3x I said no because I won't take herbs from an acupuncturist that I don't like. 2) Her acupuncture technique is also very rough and abrupt - inserting and removing the needles. I had to lie face town on the table to get my neck and head area needled. She doesn't even say anything to you - are you comfortable etc and starts jamming needles into my neck very quickly. I had to tell her please be more gentle with the needling because it hurt (it shouldn't) and her response - your neck is tense which is why it hurts. No it hurts because you are shoving the needles into my neck. At some point I called her assistant (she gives you a button to push if you need something) because my neck was hurting and Dr Nan came back to remove some needles but you have to insist on things with her. Rather than listening to your concerns she keeps "mansplaining" to you why something hurts. I've done enough acupuncture to know that it should never hurt and I came to you to relieve my headache not give me pain somewhere else. This was the worst session that I have ever had. I was not relaxed at all, I was annoyed her and even more annoyed that at the end when she came to remove all the needles (she just yanks them out) that I was bleeding in one area that she had needled and I left with a neck pain that I didn't come in with. If you've never had acupuncture done - I would definitely not recommend coming here for your first experience. If you are an experienced acupuncture patient than you need to be extremely vocal about your needs and concerns to get her to listen to you. Less

I was suffering from a stiffened neck pain. I had acupuncture before that prevent unnecessary carpal tunnel surgery. So I've experienced the benefits before. After a quick exam she was able to diagnose some of my other issues, that I chalked up more to my older age (skin blemishes, shortness of breath after doing certain activities, and many other things). Which I was admittedly hesitant about, being that medical doctors require blood work and multiple visits of sessions where you sit in the waiting room longer than you actually see and talk to the doctor. Who in the end only offer a set of pills that seem like a patch to a problem that we take forever with a cost ($$). So after the first session I was feeling a bit better. The Dr. spoke to me about herbs that could work with the acupuncture sessions to speed up the whole body healing. Considering that many medicine we take are just compounds based on naturally occurring and man made chemical compounds. Naturally occurring herbs that I can find what they are and benefits, unlike some medication. So I chose to take the herbal recommendation. I've have now had 6 acupuncture sessions, to date, and have taken 3 types of herbal teas. Yes, they cost $, but not as much as multiple refills would cost me at a pharmacy for the rest of my life. I first came to Nan's healing center after being diagnosed with two herniated discs in my lower back. After many visits to doctors and specialists over a year, I was told that there were few options and that I’d have to be on medication for the rest of my life to manage the pain. Enter Nan. She started a treatment plan and told me that I would improve 10% every session. Fast forward a couple of months I have zero pain and am now working out with max effort. I also had lingering Achilles/ calf pain for YEARS that would present mainly when jogging. I told Nan and within weeks the pain was completely gone. Dr. Nan was absolutely amazing! For one thing she's so kind and observant. She hears you out and is more than willing to help you with any issues or goals you seek for yourself. Her treatments do not stop at physical benefits, but mental as well. She helped me immensely with my stress, anxiety, insomnia, indigestion, acid reflux, gas pain, and loss of appetite. Before my treatments with her, I noticed my hair was also dropping a lot, and this also decreased. Oh!! And she helped me with my acne! I have acne on my shoulders, upper arms, and face; she helped with that too. I did a package with her and split it with my mom, so we both got 5 sessions each. Within 5 sessions, there was a big difference in the issues I mentioned. After the first session, I felt positive effects regarding my indigestion and gas pain - I was able to eat regularly again! At the end of the day, its a big combination between everything, because all bodily issues connect to each other. Once my stress went down, so did my hair loss, loss of appetite, insomnia, etc. She really knows what she's doing... During my first session, she looked at my stomach briefly, and was able to tell me multiple things about myself that I was currently struggling with (things I had not mentioned to her at all on the written forms, or verbally). If you're wondering if you should try acupuncture, but aren't sure if she'd be able to help you with your particular issue, go in for a consultation and get advice from her, she'll give you honest opinions & solutions. My mom also saw a lot of positive differences after her treatments. When she got home from the weekly appointments, she couldn't stop talking about her experience and continuously tried to convince everyone to try it too. Oh and one last thing, I was, (and still am) terrified of needles... But that did not interfere with the sessions. I chose not to look at the needles, and let her do what she had to. She's quick with inserting them, and barely gives you any time to get anxious about it. I wouldn't say it is completely painless, but definitely bearable if you want to see positive change in yourself and your body enough. A pinched nerve in my neck brought me to Dr Nan as a desperate skeptic. I couldn’t turn my head and I was sleeping in a recliner due to pain. As you can imagine, I was quite skeptical that anything would help as I had been suffering for many months. Being a nurse, having trained in only Western medicine, I was not sure this would help. Still, being unsure I was willing to try anything at that point. The office itself, is quite calming and has a relaxing atmosphere.On day one, I met Dr Nan and she promised me she could help. She asked me about my issues, examined my tongue and checked my pulse. She recommended we should work on my pain, weight loss and stress. Dr Nan placed the acupuncture needles, which I thought would hurt, but did not because of her gentle touch. She was very kind and reassuring. The treatment lasted about 45 minutes. What is important to understand is that the treatment doesn't necessarily occur in the location of your injury. The needles are placed in other trigger points along different channels which can stimulate the chi appropriately.To my surprise it was the first time in months I felt no pain. I have been going for only 3 weeks now, and my pain is more than 70% better, I am losing weight and feel much less stressed. Dr Nan has changed my life. I feel better every time I go. She had made me a true believer in the healing power of acupuncture. I've always struggled to relax (especially since I work overnight), always had issues with sinuses, allergies, acid reflux. You name it and I've probably got it, haha. However, I just started going to Nan last week. And in two sessions I'm already feeling much more energy and a whole lot less neck and shoulder pain. I've also noticed much more freedom in my voice, something my voice coach has noted to me. It's much easier find resonance and rest in a relaxed posture. I went to the healing center with a persistemt cough.that required treatment. The following day of my accupuncture session I noticed that the phlegm that had been stored in my lungs began to expel itself .
