I have a wine cooler cabinet that was not cooling. The technician arrived and proceeded to explain that I needed a new compressor. When I asked how much the total would come to, I was told $2500 or so. I thought this was too expensive so I sent him away. I called another service and the technician arrived that day and found the compressor to be fine. He tested the system and diagnosed that the system was low on refrigerant. He added refrigerant and within minutes the system started cooling again. The first technician not only misdiagnosed the system problem but he also mistakenly pointed to two valves brazed into the refrigerant line calling them driers. He was thinking that with two driers, the system was a dual zone unit. The technician who knew what he was looking at told me they are not driers but are valves used control the flow of refrigerant. It is quite clear that the technician who came from Phoenix Appliance Services was not knowledgeable about wine cooler cabinets and tried to blow smoke up my bottom recommending more service than what was required. I am reasonably certain that if I agreed to the $2500 service it would have resolved the problem, but the addition of refrigerant was far and away more cost effective.
