Love this virtual gym program that makes working out accessible to everyone in the US. They have coaches in each time zone that can assist you with all your workout and nutrition needs. Things that attracted me: virtual workouts with an instructor via zoom, accountability coaches that won't flake on you after the first workout, virtual community events with other members. Things I didn't care for: the price is a little steep, however definitely worth it. Also the use two apps for scheduling classes and communication with you coach is a bit of a learning curve in the beginning. The workouts are definitely the best I've had in a long time. The coaches also provide alternative workouts for anyone with injuries or limitations, that way you get the best use of your time. I definitely recommend this program to everyone no matter the experience level. I also loved my coach Steph who was able to help me find ways to incorporate healthy dietary habits into my life and work through things that made it difficult for me to previously incorporate. She is so easy to talk to and very creative with helping you schedule out your week both for workouts and nutrition. I also enjoyed workouts led by coach Nissa. She does not play games and will make sure you get the best workout of you life everytime. I joined the 12 week program and have gone down from a size 20 to a size 16. Everyone is asking me what my secret is and I tell them it's Queer gym. Less
Great experience. Hope to do it again soon!
i like that they allow me to turn my camera off and respect my privacy but not sending letters to my house. I did my first work out tonight and I can feel it in my abs. I hadn't worked out for years. The coach made it easy and encouraged me not to give up. It was a good first experience.
I’m still new to the program but so far my experience has been amazing! All the coaches are super welcoming, energetic and encouraging. I love being able to have this community from how and I’m not afraid to go to the gym. I’ve always been self conscious going out because I don’t know what I’m doing. 10000000/10 do recommend!
Love this gym! Coaches are great and meet you where you're at to help you reach YOUR goals. Classes are fun and everyone is so friendly.

I’m a month in and this is the best fitness experience I’ve ever accomplished. The best coaches, fun classes, and a community like no other.
Today was my first day interacting with the group. Seems like people I’ll definitely clique with. My shyness got the best of me though. The group is extremely welcoming though and there were smiles on everyone’s faces the whole time which is something that really caught my eye!

The Queer Gym had offered me a unique experience to get back into fitness with a fun group of coaches and peers! The workouts offer modifications for people like myself who are just getting back into working out, but offer more challenging exercises for when I am ready! I like the accessibility of being able to work out from home. My coach is awesome and the program is very engaging!
The queer gym is willing to accept you as you are, flaws and all to make sure your fitness goals and dreams are achievable.
Joining the gym was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made for myself. The workouts are fun and challenging, and the community is amazing! Having a coach and team constantly cheering you on makes it really easy to keep coming back every day. It’s become such an important part of my routine I can’t imagine ever leaving!
The Queer Gym found me on TikTok when I'd just started thinking about looking for a queer and trans friendly fitness group. (All hail the Algorithm.) This is the first truly positive and beginner-friendly fitness program I've ever experienced.
I’ve loved my experience at The Queer Gym so far! Having a coach to keep me accountable in both my fitness and nutrition has helped me to actually stick to a fitness program for once!
I’m a month in on my training here and I love it! The virtual classes are great and the coaches are amazing! There’s no pressure to push yourself past your limits, and the community is the cherry on top. Love the Queer Gym!

The workouts are fun and challenging and the coaches give great modifications for some wrist issues I have. I particularly love how Coach Chloe integrates storytelling into her yoga sessions. Been with them since April, did the Hard Core Homo to kick start and I've learned to put myself first! In 2020, I was low low low after another family suicide and really truly thought I was next, when I went off to the hospital to take care of my mind, body, and spirit. After a couple of years in therapies, quitting a toxic work environment, and recommitting to living for each day, I found the QG and found a love for myself again. I adore Coach Chloe's yoga and mindfulness practices, I find myself using their teachings in other areas of my life. I feel so cared for by Coach Slater's constant support and embrace. And I truly adore Coach Pallis' notes of encouragement before, during, and after a workout. The clients also have a space to communicate and it's a real help when I'm feeling down, in a funk, or need someone to say "great job!" You're not going to get this kind of compassion anywhere else - I really have a whole team of personal life coaches who love me and want me to succeed in everything. Less

First let me say I love the workouts, even on zoom. Coaches all seem great. I would say the price point for the homebody challenge was too high for what was delivered. I think their regular gym fee is worth it. It’s true they have some growing pains... things seem a little off every now and then.

I've been a member of The Queer Gym for three years. I was going 1-2 times a week prior to the Covid-19 Pandemic. I was commuting and have a family so it was hard to get to the gym more than that. Since the pandemic I've been taking classes from my living room 5-6 days a week over Zoom. The Queer Gym has been my main source of sanity throughout this pandemic. Honestly, it's been a blessing during this unprecedented time. Nat, the owner is awesome. She and the other coaches/staff (KJ, Barbara, Maritza, Jo Jo, Christina) do an amazing job. The classes are tuned for any fitness level. They are well thought out and creative. They change things up so you don't get bored. The coaches make it fun and do a great job of helping anyone with questions or injuries. Classes don't require any specific equipment, everything can be done with your own body weight or items that you have around the house. And the workouts are challenging but not too difficult or intimidating. Everything can be modified for your skill/injury level. I have chronic neck and back (herniated disks) issues and am feeling so much stronger now that I can work out more often because I'm home and not commuting. They have also planned a few fun outings, with keeping social distance protocols. The community is fun and supportive. What's also great is to be able to work out with other people from the Queer Community from all over. The community is very welcoming of people of all identities, shapes, sizes, colors, ability level. Plus I LOVE the names of the classes: Oakland Booty, Hella Arms & Abs, Hard Core Homo, WTF Yoga. May the loss be with you (yes, that was a Star Wars shoutout). Update: I do not recommend the Queer Gym. They do not hold to their word. They have not given me my refund! They have not replied to any of my messages. They are scammers and it's sad! They can text you but not respond back. Crazy!! Less
An amazing gym!!! no judgement, lots of support, awesome couches. I did the six week challenge. It was hard but thanks to the Queer Gym Team I met my goal. Thank you!
love the small classes, and not feeling intimidated while working out since we're all working together. also love the help! going to another gym, there's no one to check for form or challenge me so it makes me love this place more and more every day 🖤

You are encouraged to find the motivation internally, and to seek greater health. I also found great comraderie with the people in my class; there is a mutuality and cohesion among the gym's members that comes from, I think, the ethos that the gym creates. All in all, I lost the weight I had hoped to lose, got stronger, made friends, and feel better about myself. Thanks, Queer Gym! Less
Their team is great! They will all help you meet your goal. I did their before the holidays challenge and in 4weeks I lost more than 3% of my body fat and 10lbs. It's not easy but they keep you motivated. Their classes are amazing!
Great environment! I did the 4-week challenge and met my goals with the guidance and support of the team here. Most of my workouts were with Coach James and Coach Requia, both of whom are absolutely fantastic. They've always got your back - try the semi-private classes if you can!
I enjoy for 4 weeks and I am so happy with my results!!!! The coaches make me sweat 💦they are amazing ..... I never thought to reach my goal. I lose lbs and body fat whatttt yes I did..... I feel great 😉 this gym have the amazing team yeeeeah
I would recommend this gym for anyone but especially other NB/trans/queer all the lgbtqia people in general! It feels very inclusive and I always feel comfortable there. The workouts are always different, challenging, and with coaches who help your form and make it a lot of fun. Definitely try this gym!
This gym is fantastic! The coaches are energetic, attentive and encouraging. Their workouts are killer and creative. If you're looking for a place to get a good workout with fabulous people, this is it. I can't recommend this gym enough!
I really enjoy this Gym's trainers. They are accepting, knowledgeable, kind, and curate great workouts. They make gong to the gym challenging AND enjoyable. Great atmosphere. Definitely a great place to be.
I've only been attending class for 2 days now, but let me tell YOU!!!! It has challenged me to keep coming. When u have a group of people rooting for you, and telling me "Girl, you inspire me" "i was watching u and u are doing great" Coah Mira " "Okay, thats what i like to see, way to push through" hunny with this kind of motivation, I'll be strong, healthy, in shape, and skinny in no time. lol

Hi all! I just finished my 6 week challenge and feeling great! I lost 20 lbs and feel a lot lighter and more energetic. It was great meeting new people in a safe space and the coaches really worked us out, uh... in a good way! ;-) If you want to get into shape and make friends, the gym is totally worth it!

During the 6 Week Challenge, I went from 24% to 18.9% body fat – and I feel great! Included in the challenge are 3 classes a week (for a total of 18), a semi-personalized nutrition plan, ongoing communication with coaches, and a community of other gym members via Facebook groups. They don't exactly hold your hand throughout the process, but the coaches are pretty responsive via email and the Facebook group is a great way to get questions answered quickly. Just be prepared to put in some work when it comes to signing up for classes and scheduling weigh-ins at the middle and end of the six weeks – do it a week in advance and you should be good. The challenge is pretty involved and requires a good amount of effort, as any real transformation would. Each hour-long class starts with a check-in where members (usually about 15 or so) go around and state their name, pronouns (this should be standard practice everywhere!), current injuries (so the coaches can make modifications to the workouts), and a short icebreaker question. I love the class names (e.g. "Oakland Booty" for lower body strength, "Hella Arms & Abs" for upper body strength), and the coaches do an excellent job of keeping you motivated, making adjustments for those with injuries, and correcting your form (important for a gym with no mirrors). The bulk of the class features high intensity interval training, followed by a short cool-down period of stretches (sometimes aided with foam rollers or lacrosse balls). I left each and every class drenched in sweat and feeling euphoric. One thing I should mention is the atmosphere. The reason I felt comfortable going all-out during my workouts is that the Queer Gym lacks the elements of conventional gyms that usually turn me off: lots of grunting straight guys, mirrors everywhere, too many people using too few machines, and the feeling of silent judgment at any sign of being outside the norm of gender or sexuality. It's amazing how much harder I work out with all those things stripped away! Keep in mind that this is a small business in the middle of an exciting growth period. What they lack in equipment, they make up for with small class sizes and personalized coaching. There are no locker rooms, so you should either get changed beforehand or use the gender-neutral bathroom. Some might find the onboarding process to be a bit disorienting and it might take a little bit to get the hang of all the websites that are given to you during the challenge, but the resources are helpful and it's worth it in the end. They're also starting to add more social events, which is great for fostering a sense of community. If you're looking for a supportive, body-positive gym with fun classes run by queer POC, The Queer Gym is your spot! Less

There are no bad things that I can say about this gym. I came across a advertisement on my feed for the Queer Gym several times but never thought too much about it. I figured it was just another gimmick to get more enrollments. I was wrong. I was planning on running a half-marathon and wanted to get into shape again. I was terrible at following a plan and even worse at getting a diet/meal plan together. The best part of the 6-week challenge was that I had to do very little on my own. Coach James and Nat were amazing in getting this program started. I knew my expectations and what exactly I needed to do in order to achieve my goals. I cannot express how amazing the trainers are here as well. Specifically, I had the privilege of working with Coaches Requia, Jacqueline, Jimmy and Mira. Each one was great at keeping the classes motivated and interactive. I would not have been able to get through the workout without them cheering us on. The Queer Gym is more than a workout locations, it’s a community. I would LOVE to see these concepts expand to other parts of The Bay Area or across the country! I have never felt so comfortable walking into a gym, surrounded by strangers because I knew, no matter the fitness lever, we were all cheering each other on. So happy to be part of the FitFam! Less
I will try to focus my review on the 6-week challenge The good: - The challenge definitely gave me the motivation to hit the gym and reach for the salad - The coaches are all great and really tried to get to know me - There's a strong social component to the gym. I will try to focus my review on the 6-week challenge The good: - The challenge definitely gave me the motivation to hit the gym and reach for the salad - The coaches are all great and really tried to get to know me - There's a strong social component to the gym. I can see myself making lots of queer gym friends eventually - I felt like I was walking into classes as a whole person not just an attendee - The $15 no show/late show fee pushed me to make it to class every time The bad: - There isn't much transparency upfront on the specifics of the challenge. Only once you're in your consultation do you learn of the $600 you have to put down and the specific pre-determined goals (5% or 20 lbs). The pressure to sign on at that point is very high - The custom meal plan was hardly custom. It was given to me based on my answer to "How much do you weigh?" And generally implied that everyone should be losing weight.. It wasn't until I was half-way through the challenge that I learned I was supposed to be gaining weight - There is no structure for accountability partners. You're told to find people who have similar schedules, given 10 min to do it during orientation, and that's it Recommendations for gym: - Allow people to go home, think about what you told them during the consultation then sign a form, provide card info, etc online - Meet with everyone in the challenge during the first week to talk about their specific goals. This would've solved my problem with the meal plan and given me a better idea about which classes to take - Introduce a team component to accountability partners so they have a shared goal/responsibility to keep them motivated and well, accountable Recommendations for people considering the challenge: - Do the challenge if you have a will of steel or are willing to part with your money. If you're already small, I would consider it an extra 3 times - The gym is a good place full of good people, socialize Less
Super worth it if looking for a small and intimate experience. Lots of effort goes into making sure all are welcome.

They defined the goal for gaining muslce to be a gain of 8 lbs. of muscle, and I didn’t meet that goal. I am not sure that was reasonable, but I suppose someone may have been able to accomplish that. I did see some muscle definition. I like working out there. The community is strong and growing stronger. Be forewarned that this is a small business trying to grow a little too quickly. They aren’t able to keep up communications with members, scheduling has been a bit messy, and coaching appointments were not easily available. If you can give them a little grace regarding these issues, then I would recommend it. Less

I just finished the 6 Week Challenge and it was one of the best decisions I've ever made. Let me tell you why... About 4 years ago I became unemployed for reasons that left me feeling very traumatized. During the following years I noticed that my mental health seemed to be on a downward spiral, so I did my best to combat that with improving my physical health, which was going great until I ended up needing a minor surgery that left me unable to use my full range of motion for 3 months. During that time I completely fell into an unhealthy routine, which progressed into massive depression. I could barely get out of bed most days, yet I could see so clearly in my head all my goals, all the things I wanted to achieve that day or in near the future. However, I felt paralyzed, unmotivated, and stagnant. I kept telling myself I'd start the change tomorrow, then tomorrow would come, and I'd tell myself the same thing over and over again, yet would take no action. Why couldn't I make the commitment to myself? Will I ever have the energy to motivate myself and hold myself accountable for my actions? Then one day, while I was lying in bed I saw an ad on Instagram for The Queer Gym's 6 Week Challenge and I thought, "6 weeks, that's not a long amount of time, I can commit to that." Little did I know, but in that moment, my decision to finally commit to helping myself was the one thing I needed to begin changing my life. The first week of the challenge was a whirlwind! I showed up to orientation and immediately felt bombarded by all this new information. I was given a detailed meal plan, a grocery list and recipes and it all felt a bit overwhelming. I was told I was expected to take 3 classes a week for 6 weeks, with a weigh-in once every weekend. So, I did all the things that we're asked of me to the best of my ability and by the end of the 1st week I saw immediate results. Wow, this was actually working!? I noticed that the classes, even at their fullest, felt intimate enough to still feel I was getting the attention, support, and motivation of the coaches and trainers. And it was refreshing to be in gym surrounded by fellow queers and lots of fem energy (a nice vacation from the macho vibes most gyms give off). By week 3, I had already hit my goal, which was shocking, but felt amazing! However, I also realized that I had hit a wall mentally. I was putting so much effort into doing all the things that would give me results physically, yet failed to realize how I was ignoring my mental health in the process. So for the last 3 weeks I focused on how to harmonize the program with my life in a way that was fully sustainable to me, and it worked! By the end I lost 6.7% of my BMI (my goal being 5%) My reward? I feel healthier, stronger, confident, and motivated to see all the goals I have in life to fruition. Plus, because I met my goal, I get my monthly membership reduced by $5 for every .05% of my BMI that I dropped. That's $30 off folks. For those turned off by the "high" monthly membership price, I encourage you to try and find another gym that gives you both the support and motivation of a personal trainer, combined with a ton of necessary diet and nutrition information, cuz I don't think you're gonna find it anywhere else. Just remember, before you decide to do this challenge, just make sure you know what you need and/or want out of the it. You will get back as much as you put into it. However, I do not believe that this is a "one size, fit's all" program either, so if at any point you feel something isn't working for you, vocalize that to the coaches because they are there for YOU and are more than happy to help modify something to accommodate your needs. They were very kind, and they helped me with modifications and worked with me to make exercising something I could actually do with a chronic illness. I was 8 weeks away from a bachelorette party where I’d have to put on a bathing suit, and my body has changed drastically in the last couple of years due to a change in career and diet. As a traveling marketing rep I found myself eating a lot of fast food and sitting for long periods of time, which was a far cry from my 10+ years in the restaurant industry where movement and connection to good food was a given. Needless to say, I had the 20 lbs and body fat to lose. After 6 weeks of intense meal planning, made easier by the program and support from other members, and being sore in places I didn’t know I could be sore, I am so happy I signed up for this challenge. I signed up for the 6 week challenge and met my goal! They helped me get back into healthier eating and moving habits. I had forgotten what it felt like to be more in tune with my body. I'm grateful for the opportunity given to get back into shape. The gym was clean and pretty roomy. It only felt packed a couple of times/didn't feel too crowded. They had one rowing machine and one elliptical... nice to get warmed up sometimes. The class times were pretty limited: M-Th 3 morning classes and 3 evening classes. The gym was closed Friday nights and only two a.m. classes on weekends. I get it-queers like to party and dance too, but not all of us. I enjoyed the classes but sometimes wished for: more variation and more cardio options. The names are, of course, very gay and fun. I also appreciate that they include stretching and utilize rollers and massage balls. Every class starts with Name/Pronoun/injuries/and a trivia question... it was pretty gay and I liked it. :) It really helped build community and felt nice to get to know people a bit better. I liked the people I met and loved working out with other queers, young and old-er. I really liked the instructors, but most left within 2 weeks of each other. Reading some of the other reviews, I guess this is pretty normal sort of turn around for the gym. ??? The 6 week challenge was... challenging. I went in knowing I had to lose more than 3 pounds a week to meet goal. Most medical health professionals recommend losing 2 pounds a week, at most! I didn't like that fact but felt pretty desperate to start getting back in shape. The betting-$500-on-yourself thing worked for me but I didn't like the advertising technique used: bait and switch/free gym for 6 weeks, but $500 up front with chance to win back. You go in for an orientation and they are expecting people to have $500 available the same week. This worked for me, I had the $$$, and I really liked the opportunity, but it is not for everyone. Overall, I really enjoyed my time at The Perfect Sidekick. However, the location was a bit out of my way and the hours weren't perfect. The TPS gym membership is just as much or more than other gyms who have more classes, more times, less turn over, and more equipment. I also have another gym membership elsewhere. For these reasons, I did not continue on to a membership at TPS. I recommend TPS to people trying to kick off a health journey and to those who can conveniently go to this gym. I also know regular gyms are difficult to feel safe and comfortable at for many of us... if that is an issue- you should definitely go here! Everyone is so nice and supportive. Less

I understand if you complete the challenge you get your money back but for those who aren't successful in numbers even when following the plan to a T lose a considerable amount. If it wasn't for my best friend who put the $499 on her creditcard I wouldn't have been able to participate. $499 is an extremely large lump of money especially considering I am qwoc trying to survive in the bay area. For a gym that promotes helping the community it is hard to fully believe that when with such a high cost for the challenge or for the normal gym membership so many of the queer community can't participate in something that should be more inclusive. After paying the $499 (which Nat charged me in two payments so that it wouldn't be so much at once) we had orientation which we were then told we needed to buy over $100 in supplements and that folks who remix the plan don't hit goal so despite not having that kindof money I felt like I had to do it to make back the 499 so I did. I think starting off with letting people know right away how much they are going to come out of pocket is the responsible thing to do especially when you're targeting your community. I think I heard that there is some scholarship program starting, it would really be amazing to offer full scholarships/ and or partial scholarships for folks in the low income bracket who need an extra hand in getting in a healthier routine. I think when I started they were still /are still going through changes. I got the impression some of the trainers were being overworked/overscheduled. I do appreciate certain things changing while I was there like not keeping the scale out. It is difficult to watch people weigh themselves multiple times in one gym session, it creates unhealthy gym environment especially considering most people doing the challenge are concerned with either the scale or the bmi tester. I did see complaints about certain things on the facebook group and watched Nat fix them or begin to set changes in motion so that's reassuring that they are listening and trying to make sure needs are met such as getting new mats, painting the gym, getting sanitization wipes and a water cooler. I did most of my classes with Yvonne who was amazing and I am super appreciative of how patient she was when I forgot how to do something or couldn't figure out how to do something in the workout sessions. Kay was also amazing, her yoga classes made hard days more bearable and her classes really did help with stretching and alleviating the soreness. I hope yall get her some more equipment and better yoga mats. I took a few classes with Kendra who also is amazing and patient and genuinely cares that you know what you're working out with each move on how to do it properly. The trainers have all been really great and every class I took was a welcoming environment. I do feel better than I did 6 weeks ago and I do feel stronger and can notice a change in my moods. I wish the gym was affordable to continue with classes but I just honestly will never have that excess monthly income to afford the gym's membership. Less

This review is long over due! I lived around the corner before the gym moved from Park, and let me tell you, Nathalie's Saturday morning classes kicked my butt! Clean and comfortable space, had everything you need. I have been slacking and have not been to the new location yet, but definitely looking forward to it.
Phenomenal gym! Professional clean and grade A service! They go above and beyond to take care of all your fitness needs! Love this place!
Nathalie is amazing... always working on self improvement, team improvement, and service improvement! i highly recommend if you are looking for a place to motivate you and get you in shape!
I've been in the Bay for awhile and this place only gets better. Love this place!!
An awesome space to get a great workout. The environment is fun, the coaches and staff are amazing. Come check out the new location, more space to workout with great people 💪🏽💪🏽💪🏽 #thequeergym #6weekchallenge #oakland
My cousin lives in Oakland and I've done several drop in classes when I visit....love this place! The staff and members there are welcoming and it’s always a pleasure working out in an environment that is so friendly like theirs! I’ve made new friends and can’t wait to plan another trip! Makes me wish I was a local! Keep up the great work!
Such a fun, welcoming place to get your fit on! The staff really care that you reach your goals. I would highly recommend it 👏
Finding a gym were the staff actually care about progress is very difficult to find. Nat will hold you hand to keep you on track every step of the way!! Hand down one of the best places around!
If real results are what you’re looking for, this is the gym for you! The trainers and staff there are very accommodating and the energy is always great!
Nate and her team care deeply for their clients and will push you to get the results that you have failed to get with other programs. Highly recommend!
II dropped in when i was in town and had so much fun!"
Love the concept, love the energy and I love the workouts. This is the only place that uses accountability and follows through with what they say. No doubt this is the best option to get back into shape...
Nat is a caring gym owner who does everything she can to serve her customers. She’s up before the sun and returns late at night. She’s out her heart and soul into making this a destination for anyone who would like to get healthy. I recommend everyone ignore the sneer campaign against her and look at the positive results and impact she’s made in countless people’s lives.
This place is legit! The owner, her team and the community they've built there are super impressive....and don't get me started on those workouts! Lol
I have been to a lot of gyms in my life and I have to say the passion that Nathalie and the Queer Gym family and team share with the members and their results is impressive and inspiring. If you want to be part of a community where the owner and staff actually care - then this gym is for you!
The 6 week challenge was a bait and switch. The whole spiel ended with "but really, you need to put down $500. And if youre successfull, youll get it back." Had that been clear in the first place, I wouldnt have wasted my or Tai's time (she was cool, tho). It all seemed really shady. Then I heard about QG throwing and event the same time, date and place as an already established queer event. Nah.... More

The folks at The Queer Gym know their stuff, and the vibe is inspiring AF. You'll not find a better place to get your fitness on. Most gyms are pushing bodyshaming and bad fitspo, it's refreshing to see a gym actually respect their people. That's The Queer Gym.

I will revisit when I can better afford the monthly membership. I work in Menlo Park so the only times I could go to the gym were week nights and weekend mornings so scheduling classes was challenging for me. These time slots were limited (classes only hold up to about 15 people) but I was patient and willing to move things around whenever something was full. The environment felt super inclusive. The gym utilizes group classes as its main focus with some semi private sessions in the morning. Every group class started off with a mini ice breaker: name, pronouns, any injuries, and a short question. I really appreciated that it made me feel like we were building community on top of working out together. Coaches were always willing to make modifications to a workout if someone was injured or if it was a little too hard. Less

We are saddened that Nathalie Huerta (The Queer Gym, Owner) is determined to knowingly erase the People's Annual Oakland Pride 5k FUN RUN, WALK + ROLL - an Oakland LGBTQ Pride Eve event founded by Black LGBTQ+ folks for EVERYONE! Nathalie participated in the annual free Oakland LGBTQ+ Pride eve run that predates the Queer Gym run. The following year she decided to offer a fee-based run - in the same place, same time, even promoting it with the same name as the community run and in the exact same location as the original community run - effectively pushing the community run out of its annual space in 2016. We (over 440 of us) have reached out repeatedly and are asking that she simply choose another month for the gym run and honor the work of the marginalized Black LGBTQ folks who created the original free Oakland Pride fun run for the entire commUNITY. We should run, walk, roll and/or sit + cheer freely + united on Oakland Pride Eve - we can still support the fee-based gym run on another date. To widely advertise the fee-based Queer Gym run (with the support of Oaklandish's budget) on the same annual Oakland Pride Eve date/space as the free one is an attempt to splinter the community when we should all be working together - isn't that what our ancestors created Pride for? To use another Oakland Bay Area legend - The Hella Gay DJ and Dance Party tribe's cultural cache - built over more than a decade - to add "sexiness" to the gym run without Hella Gay's permission - all in an attempt to dupe others to unwittingly participate in the erasure of their own oppressed Rainbow Family members is cruel. Please tell Nathalie to support the precedent-setting annual Oakland Pride Eve community run by simply choosing a different month for the Queer Gym run. We ask that Nathalie come run with us + share our free event rather than continue to harm it. Less
I attended a few years ago and only trusted and enjoyed one trainer and once they left I left soon after. I didn't like the work outs that the other trainers did and was also disappointed that the demographic was mostly non-POC. I'm glad I was able to meet that one amazing trainer but other than that I didn't care for what was being offered.

This is going to be a semi-long review, so stay with me... The first time I came across the TQG was when I went to an even at Rio for 4th of July and their car was parked outside. I get so happy whenever I see queer things, so as soon as I noticed the car, I instantly got excited and decided to take a picture next to it. I promised myself from that day that I would check them out. Fast forward to a few weeks later, my partner sends me this Instagram post from TQG that talks about the 6 week weight loss challenge. I think she sent me this for fun but never thought that I would actually sign us up which I did. A week later we're signing a contract to enter the challenge. Something that we weren't really sure about first because it was $499 and then also, we haven't worked out in a LONG TIME so we were pretty much comfortable being lazy. But we both looked at each other and thought how this opportunity wouldn't come easily to us anymore and that it was time to make a change to our lifestyle. So we invested in it. 6 weeks later, I lost 20 pounds and my partner lost 5% of body fat! We completed the challenge and met our goals. My experience thus far has been amazing. I love the coaches, especially Nedra who no longer coaches at TQG. She made sure that the class was always motivated and kicking butt. Never in my life since I've come out have I had this many queer friends. Which I'm so grateful for <3 I do agree with people about scheduling and updating issues with the gym. I can see how that is frustrating for some people, but I always like giving people the benefit of the doubt and love to think that there is always a reason why they do something, if that makes sense. I am normally the type of person who has low patience but with everything that was going on, like the gym being relocated and changing/cancelling classes, I wasn't too unhappy about it. I understood. Hopefully that is something they can work on in the long run, ya'll do have to understand that their team is fairly small so there is only so much they can do for such a high number of members. I just signed another contract with them for 6 months because I loved how much of an impact they had on my new lifestyle. I think I will be sticking with the same nutrition plan they gave me when I started and still go to the workouts. I can wait to grow with the gym and meet new queer folx! Less

The Queer Gym was overall a good experience for me. Doing the 6 week challenge was never something I pictured myself doing, let alone succeeding in doing so. It was just the push I needed to start making lifestyle changes with no more excuses. The classes were great with the sense of accepting community members and coaches around me. I think it's so important to do introductions like they do here: name, pronouns, and answer to a silly question; this was you feel a little less awkward getting into all sorts of positions and sweating like crazy near the people in class. Going 3+ days a week was fun and I genuinely looked forward to going to my classes and having that "hurts so good" sore feeling afterward. The nutritional plan was the hardest part for me and some of it may have been attached to the fact that the reasoning/science behind it wasn't explained to us. It was easier for me to reach the goal of the 6 week challenge (lose 20 lbs or 5% total body fat) because I was not very active or conscious of my eating habits before starting, but it was much harder for people who were already working out & eating healthy before they started to get to the predetermined goal. I think it'd be more wise and health-oriented of the gym to consider using a percentage of personal weight, body fat %, or inches around the waist next time they do something like this. Some challenges that should not have been a part of the 6 week challenge (and probably as a regular member of the gym) included poor explanation of all details of the challenge (I was in the very first group so I have some empathy that they accidentally omitted some important info - ie, 3x per week meant 3 days, not 3 classes - but groups following mine seemed to have the same questions that my group had, week after week), last-minute cancellations (I understand if a coach is sick, but if their reason to close the gym is due to an event in which the date was known about for months in advance, it's disappointing for people who were counting on those days as a workout day), the gym moving with no/little warning (I didn't even get the email just because I wasn't subscribed to their general emailing list that sent out info on health, workouts, etc.. There should be a mass email to every single member and challenger in the case of something huge like this), not being emailed about a coach leaving (same reason as before), relying heavily on FB to distribute info, and its general expensive pricing makes it unaffordable to many in the community, especially the neighborhood's community they recently moved to.
