Underground S&C is the first gym I’ve signed up for and my experience could not be more positive. The coaches are professional, inspiring and encouraging. The rest of the folks that come in are just as great & it is a very inclusive environment! Would highly recommend.

Fantastic local crossfit gym and community! The staff and owners are all wonderful and welcoming. They have gone out of their way to purchase equipment that works even for wheelchair users, fixed the entrance ramps to be smooth (no automatic door opener) but everyone comes out to grab the door. No matter your fitness level, they will adapt it to you. Really glad I gave crossfit another go :)

Awesome Gym. Came in for a free class and Coach Dan and Coach Matt were very welcoming to someone who has never done the movements. Super welcoming gym and great environment to get in shape. Very flexible system to reserve classes and drop in. Small groups as well so coaches are able to provide feedback as required.

Going to USC has been an overwhelmingly positive experience. The programming is varied and challenging, scalable to every experience and skill level; the coaches are professional and knowledgeable; and the atmosphere is fun and inclusive, while still inspiring you to work hard and get a great workout. I've only just joined the gym a few weeks ago but I love it already. This is the first time doing this type of workout and it's challenging but a great workout! The coaches are super helpful and supportive, as is the other gym members.

Joined in November 2023. Staff is super kind, knowledgeable, and focused on making sure everyone gets a great workout. They’re great about modifying exercises if you need it. Community is inclusive and very friendly. Highly recommend this place for anyone looking for a fun place to get a great workout!
I needed motivation to improve my fitness post pandemic. Dan Shrum was an impressive trainer at a gym that i used to go to. I consulted with him at Underground and was paired with Mathieu. He is very knowledgeable, attentive and he has made me feel motivated during my sessions with him. Underground had a very welcoming community, and a cool vibe .
My partner and I joined in for a group class while visiting from out of town and it was it awesome! The coach, people, and environment were so welcoming and we felt at ease as soon as we walked in. The workout itself was fantastic and we loved that warm up and stretching was prioritized before getting into the heavy-duty stuff. We will definitely be coming back whenever we are in Ottawa.

I'm not exaggerating, USC and personal training with Dan has literally changed my life. After 10 years of trying absolutely everything to get help for my scoliosis, I was losing hope and trust in my body. After 4ish months of PT my pain levels were down over 50%, and now they are down 70-85%. I have a new lease on life and couldn't be more grateful for Dan and USC Gym. I never expected I'd be able to do deadlifts and a variety of other weight bearing exercises with moderate - severe scoliosis. I've learned so much about my body, proper form and exercise techniques; Dan is an amazing attentive personal trainer who has a gift for identifying compensations and weaknesses, how to address them and adapting exercises to your fitness level and lifestyle. He has helped me understand and navigate my highly sensitive nervous system, but also pushes me when I can be pushed. He checks in reguarly and is always supportive and a joy to work with. Although I'm not at the level to do the group classes yet, I notice the atmosphere is warm, welcoming and fun, with great music! If you want to elevate your fitness and get the level of attention of a personal trainer in a group class, go to this gym. For those seeking a CrossFit experience with highly intense workouts (and less of a focus on safety and technique) nearby CrossFit Hintonburg (my previous gym) provides consistently intense (think 40 minute hard EMOMs six days a week). The standout feature of this gym (USC) is how dorky the coaches are about keeping up to date on fitness research, and it's implementation. Highly recommend. Less
As someone who is pretty new to both weightlifting and this sort of workout, I find the coaching at this gym to be superb. The coaches take the time to teach proper technique and focus on building your skills and strength over time. And you see results! The community is welcoming too and the group atmosphere makes it fun to go to the gym.

I have never felt more accepted at a box or gym. Whether it be the coaches or members, everyone is kind, caring and compassionate. I have been doing CrossFit and weightlifting for over a decade and have been a size medium to 4X. When I say this gym is inclusive and non-judgmental, I mean it, and I am proud to be part of it. The Coaches/Instructors Dan - On day one, during an open gym, I asked for his input on some good calf stretches in passing. This resulted in a full-blown one-on-one lesson about foot strengthening, wherein he gave me his own personal toe spacers so I could work on my mobility at home. He had no obligation to help me at all as it was an open gym (session without an instructor), and he chose to go absolutely above and beyond because that is the person he is. He also is incredible at providing modification, suggestions and feedback - and always has some great beats during class. Karine - I take Karine's Olympic Weightlifting and, I may be biased as it is my favourite way to move my body - but these classes are always SO much fun and the absolute highlight of my week. Karine is always such a friendly face, especially if you're having a rough strength day. Matt - Matt has a passion for fitness that he loves sharing with others. He is always ready to help you scale a workout or provide insightful recommendations and feedback. Even if a set was less than ideal, he is still there cheering you on every step of the way. Other Logistics The facility is always clean, there are comfy couches, and the equipment is well taken care of. The building has a single gender-neutral washroom (never a line, though, as class sizes are small). This gym is a proud supporter of the 2SLGBTQIA+ community and is one floor with direct access to the parking lot. I generally do not feel like working out, but every time I get there, I am reminded that I get to be part of such a fantastic community of people trying their best and having fun. If you are looking for a box and a bit of a community, or at least some friendly smiles during your next training session - I cannot recommend Underground enough. Underground is where you are guaranteed to sweat, but they will give you the shirts off their back (or toe spacers off their feet) to make sure you succeed. Less

I’ve been training with USC for a little over two years and I can honestly say that my overall fitness has increased significantly thanks to the programming they offer. Great fun and challenging. I'm a complete beginner when it comes to weight lifting and strength conditioning but I've learned heaps and feel completely welcome at every class. The best thing about the classes is how varied the program is day by day; each instructor constantly keeps it interesting.

I was a member of this gym for about a year and a half when I lived in Ottawa. Dan and Karine Shrum were incredible coaches and helped me not only with strength training, but mobility. In the time I spent here I learned so much about body mechanics, mobility, and overall health in general. They have curated a safe space for all fitness types and walks of life, wherever you happen to be on your journey. I used to be hesitant when hearing about CrossFit, how it can lead to injuries and where more reps would be encouraged over form. I couldn't have been more wrong with those assumptions. Through the guidance of Dan, Karine, Matthew and Meera, I learned the importance of proper techniques and mobility work, plus listening to your body. There are days to push, and there are days to take it easy, because consistency will always be intensity. The emphasis on hip modibilty for long-term health alone was worth the monthly membership fee. Though I am no longer living in Ottawa, I would recommend this gym over anything else in the city, and is more than worth the cost. Not only that, but the work they do in the community just strengthens the bond between members. I truly felt like it was my second home when living there. When we moved back to Ottawa we were looking for a gym with knowledgeable and passionate coaches who pay attention to what you’re doing and contribute to a welcoming and fun vibe. We tried a few gyms and USC was the standout. Our experience has been great and I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend it to anyone regardless of age or ability.

This gym has everything - very smart, friendly, and supportive coaches, amazing programming that keeps you on your toes and hitting those PRs, and an incredible community of members that are fun to be around. USC is more than just a gym but a full on community. I have lived in Ottawa for almost 11 years and never have found such a wonderful group of fitness people. The programming is spot on, the coaches do a great job of providing feedback and make any modifications necessary for you to be successful and improve, and the members of the gym are so welcoming. USC is an unbelievably great gym that has had a really positive impact on my life. They offer elite quality training and programming, which they are happy to modify as much as needed to ensure all fitness levels are welcome. In the past I have been frustrated by other gyms that had a “Beast Mode” mentality in their workouts and programming, that led to frequent burnout and injury. USC methodically programs their workouts into training blocks to focus on improving certain movements/skills throughout the year, with deload weeks scheduled in at appropriate times Their programming allows to sustainability and consistency in training. Each workout starts with a strategic mobility session and warm-up to get your body adequately primed for the workout to come. Then you are coached on every movement to ensure proper form and technique. The gym has an easy-going atmosphere. We all take fitness seriously there and some compete with each other for fun, but we always make time to laugh and have a good time. 100% recommended. Less

Where to begin? The staff - the heart of this wonderful community, has been nothing short of perfect. The care, attention and knowledge I've felt and received since joining has been life changing. Not only do I feel stronger and more capable and confident in the world, but I've also got a head full of new ideas and approaches to fitness and all facets of health (nutrition, sleep, breathing, etc.). I have quite literally never felt better in my life, and I have a long history of exercise/fitness experience ranging from standard bodybuilding workouts to MMA, running, etc. I now feel like I have a direction, with achievable goals that align perfectly with where I want to go - working out is FUN again. The pace and programming following a logical structure and intensity, so much so that I can confidently attend each class (six days a week) and never feel overworked. Once you get in the groove, it just gets exponentially better. The facility is clean and organized, the equipment is first class. The gym dog, Nova is a little burst of energy and happiness.
