My sister Becky Vasey, I cant begin to express how much your attention and care for me has done for my body and soul, I love you sis. 60 days and 20 private training sessions, saw me go from 252pounds to 217pounds as of today. August (the owner) has evolved his programming to help athletes focus on core skills (gymnastics, sleds, etc.) while expanding his expertise to stand out in the crowd, which is a direct result of his career as an athlete and a coach. But, they would often offer words that made me want to be fit. You see, a lot of what is special about EVSC is (yes they have incredible free weights, machines, rig, and a variety of workout stations) but the reason I’ve been here for 5 years loyally is that this gym’s owner (a real person on site not a corporation) Cares about your health goals. Me? I just wanted to keep moving when I started. What happened was…. I was CHALLENGED. I was challenged by my own self. Seeing every age, gender, and ability I wanted to be better. I had struggled with butterfly pull-ups for months, then worked with Coach Sam in a single one-on-one session and it clicked and I was able to start stringing them together. I've attended birthdays, weddings, funerals, and births with people I met at that gym. Most importantly, I kept training consistently for almost a decade and I kept going because of the people. CrossFit (or any sport) alone, I think, barely matters. But being part of a community is important. But then I moved, far away, during a pandemic and when I landed in Phoenix I bought a set of bumpers and a barbell and for many many hot desert months I trained alone in my garage. Then I met Chris and was welcomed into his strong(wo)man group at East Valley. I hadn't come into a new gym in many years and I had the same nervous energy as I did at my very first class in 2012. Maybe unsurprisingly I was welcomed with a similar warmth I'd experienced in my first day. I meet a lot of people who say "I wish I could be as strong as you but I just don't like going to the gym" and my wish for them is that they can find a community so that the question is never "do I want to workout today?", but "do I want to see my friends?" I suspect communities like this don't happen by accident. They're the result of years of work and effort by the community's leaders and stewards. If you're in the neighborhood we're here for you.
