FITCAMP 180

I interned at FitCamp 180 in Edmond, Oklahoma while earning my Human Performance degree. On New Year’s, I participated in a workout led solely by head trainer Shawn Busby with me and a few backup trainers participating. The workout was excessively high in volume and intensity — including 500 curls — and shortly after, I was diagnosed with rhabdomyolysis, a serious, potentially life-threatening condition caused by extreme overexertion. My creatinine kinase levels spiked to 36,000 (normal is under 200), and I was hospitalized, coming dangerously close to kidney failure and death.Shawn knew I was starting my college baseball season in less than two weeks, knew I was our starting pitcher, and knew I worked harder than anyone in the room. As a coach, he failed to inform me ahead of time about the workout we’d be doing or to advise me to pace myself. The result was a major setback to my athletic career — I couldn’t pursue professional baseball right after my season ended, I needed significant recovery time, and my absence on the mound severely impacted my team. When I informed Shawn of my diagnosis, he refused to believe me, cut off all contact, offered no help with hospital bills, and declined to sign off on my internship hours. While interning, I also learned that none of the trainers at FitCamp 180 had formal education in Human Performance or related fields — only minimal, entry-level certifications.Shawn works hard to make it appear as though he cares for people, but in my experience, his actions showed he cares far more about himself and the money he makes. If a workout like this could nearly kill me as a trained college athlete, I cannot imagine the risk for the general population. I would not recommend FitCamp 180 to anyone seeking a safe, supportive, and knowledgeable fitness environment.Edit:After posting my review, I was contacted within an hour by Shawn’s attorney asking me to take it down, and Shawn himself called me immediately afterward. He still denies seeing my test results, even though I shared them with him.To me, this shows a pattern I’ve also seen mentioned in other reviews — instead of addressing concerns directly, criticism is met with denial or legal threats. His response only confirmed why I felt compelled to warn others.
