Camp Rhino has a refreshing culture and great people that are all about you becoming a better version of yourself and as part of a community. In the 4 months I’ve been going, I’ve increased in my physical health and found a renewed joy for developing my physical fitness. I want to highlight the coaches, the gym culture, and my own experience.--Coaches--I’ve taken 3 different types of classes with 4 different coaches: Bootcamp (Debbie), CrossFit (Dee and Dakota), and Tactical (Kaitlyn).DebbieShe has this frequent smile and cheeriness about her. Her inner passion for how fitness can bring joy to peoples’ lives (like it has with her) shines through. Her bootcamp classes reflect that inner vigor. If your form isn’t great she will spot it, go over, and give you tips when she sees you struggle. Part of enjoying fitness is how it feels to do the exercise right, and she has an eagle eye for spotting that and helping.DeeHas a vitality that she brings to her classes. She is always her enthusiastic, genuine self, especially in her interactions with others. Her tips and coaching cues help things click into place. The coaching prompts for how to do a snatch or jump rope greatly helped in my progress in those exercises.DakotaHe demonstrates the humility and understanding in physical fitness of somebody who has had multiple sports injuries and recovered from them. His relaxed demeanor contrasts with his knowledgeability of fitness and an eye for proper form. He knows when to tell you to stop if the weight is too much for where you’re at or if your form is off.Kaitlyn“Bringing out your best” is the embodiment of her coaching style. She will help you show yourself that you are capable of so much more than you ever thought possible, if you’re willing. She will challenge you. She will point out if you need to increase or decrease weight. Importantly, she will let you know when you can and should push yourself harder on certain exercises if you’re slacking – and you’ll know she’s right too.She often says, “I can scale this down to anybody’s level of fitness.” And she can. There’s a friendliness in that that you rarely see because she wants to bring out the best. Your best at that stage might be lifting half the weight of anybody else in the class, but it is still your best for where you are and she wants to bring that out of you.--Gym Culture--None of the coaches I’ve taken classes with will ever have a negative remark about what stage you are in in your physical fitness journey. You don’t have to worry about something being stolen if your bag is out because everybody knows everybody there. If you ask for help you will get it. Nobody has brushed me off when I’ve asked questions, no matter how simple.--My Experience--I’m new to CrossFit, so most of the exercises I have either not done much of or never at all before, especially Olympic lifts. I know I’m in good hands at Rhino. They’ve been able to scale things down to what I’m capable of and cleared for doing. In the past 4 years I’ve been dealing with some daily, painful, chronic forearm tendinopathy and plantar fasciitis/sciatic pain. I’m almost completely healed and this gym has met me where I’m at. Most importantly, I can happily say that they’ve helped me heal faster and regain my strength. Because of them, I know one day that I’ll be strong enough to compete with the rest of the athletes. The owners talk about how the gym is all about community, and if you’re in the gym community then you’ll certainly be part of it. In a transient city, Camp Rhino Southeast is a rare place where the gym and the people come together to better each other. Rhino Tough!
