Coach Meagan Mylan gave me the sweetest note yesterday! It made me reflect a bit and made me think about how much I appreciate CrossFit Coeur d'Alene! It has been a difficult year for me. There is one thing that has helped so much these past several months and that is the time I spend at CFCDA. COACHES - Given the range of people who train there (regional placers and national weightlifting team members, moms, grandmothers, older men, brand new athletes), it's clear the coaching is high-end. After a call with one of the CrossFit C'dA managers who recommended her, I happily work with Alanna Stewart. I cannot recommend her clearly, highly or enthusiastically enough. Alanna's programming is tied to exactly who I am at my age, background and current ability. She already has a keen knowledge of my injury profile, mechanical limitations and idiosyncrasies as well as my goals. Her programming reflects all of these dynamics. One of my benchmark workouts she created is three movements, two of which are my weak points (great challenge for a person who likes to be challenged!). In about three months of working together twice per week, my fitness-level on that benchmark is up 33%. Alanna is a patient, fun, creative, clear teacher and her obsession with detail in assessing movement is at a level I haven't seen since getting to train with some of the nation's top wrestling coaches and watching my daughter train with Olympic coaches. No doubt, Alanna's work is supported by a culture of team accountability, evident in how the staff shares ideas and best practices and runs the shop like a team. GEAR - The owners of CrossFit C'dA fit an enormous amount of well maintained equipment in their moderately sized Box. Everything you would expect at a facility training regional athletes and us normal humans: ropes, huge array of kettlebells, weights, AirAssault bikes, Concept 2s, two Ski Ergs, multiple boxes, a huge stash of sand bags, med balls, stationary and portable lifting racks, multiple wall ball targets and wall balls, a massive choice of bars, bumpers, a GHD and lifting blocks and the attendant foam rollers are all there. This is all meticulously organized which speaks again to the culture of the Box; I have never seen so much as a bar collar left out after people train, which is easy because the owners have a place for everything. CLASSES - They start on time, the coaches are prepared well ahead of class. During the workouts, the coaches are all-eyes-on-their-athletes with tips and encouragement flowing. In the advanced classes there is clearly a spirit of competition and drive and in the beginner classes there is appropriate and creative scaling. One of the classed is for parents with toddlers that is just as well planned as any other. After classes, participants enjoy one another's achievements and friendship. FACILITY - Always clean, always ready to go. Two bathrooms, always stocked. DOWNSIDES? - I will have to reach for this: sometimes it gets cold in there, so be mindful to bring layers. There is a two hour parking limit on the street, but it's been easy to find parking right next to the gym and I have never been ticketed. It's possible that some people might be intimidated by elite athletes doing their thing, but, I think people will chill when they see these are just people who have really found their joy center in training hard, there's no class system at play there at-all! COSTS - It's CrossFit with Grade-A coaches and gear, not a Clubby-McClub-Face so you will pay for the expertise. If costs are a hardship but you need to train, I suggest you try it for a bit and balance the return on investment compared to other CF boxes and gyms in the area. Less

This is a great community! I have dropped into 28 other boxes this year during my travels and CFCDA is by far one of the best! Coach Chandra was a blast to workout with and the other athletes were extremely welcoming and supportive. I will be back for certain.

Every Tuesday morning as well as other days of the week, The partticipants from this gym drag metal wheels behind them up and down the alley. They are extremly loud and wake up the whole block! They have no regaurd for there neighbors as they start this routine at 6AM!!!!! Thanks for waking me up after working a 12 hour shift.

This is an amazing, wonderful and supportive gym. All the coaches are amazing and I feel blessed to be able to come here. I am a person who normally hates working out... I truly enjoy these workouts and the challenge they present. I have become stronger in everyday life and my stamina has improved to help me with hiking through the woods to hunt.

The community truly is something special, especially considering the hard times it seems most have been going through in this country. I wanted to share my health story here because it might help someone else who is on the fence about Crossfit and the Paleo Diet. I know I was at first. Most people come to Crossfit to lose weight or get fit. I came with hopes that I could get back my life. I was diagnosed with Crohn's Disease nine years ago. Crohn's is an inflammatory bowel disease that is commonly treated with serious immune-suppressive drugs and steroids. Over the years I have done monthly injections in my stomach to control symptoms, taken up to 12 pills a day of anti-inflammatory medication, and received bi-annual iron infusions at the Cancer Center. I was told I would be on medication for the rest of my life and most likely face numerous surgeries. Nine years ago my Sed rate, which measures the level of inflammation in your body, was 91. Normal is 0-25. I was skinny, sick, and nearly dead. This past year after starting working out at Crossfit CDA and committing to Paleo (most of the time), my Sed rate is down to 38, not perfect but a huge improvement. I am currently off medication and have not had a surgery to date. My doctors don't believe it. I am so lucky and grateful. I believe Jonathan and Derek have been instrumental in helping me get my health back on track. Crossfit can change your life. Try out this box! Less

Each work out was done with lots of planning, practice and push from the coaches. I truly appreciate the new learning I got from these guys, the new friendships that I made and the awesome welcome I received. Not every Crossfit Gym can boast that they are one of the best, but these guys certainly can. Although I have yet to be able to make it out to Crossfit CDA, I have had the pleasure of working and training with Derek, one of the head owners and coaches at CDA. I met Derek while on a work assignment overseas and decided to take up his invitation to train with him. At this point in time I was a year or so into doing what I thought was crossfit, and man was I wrong. Instead of training with Derek, he became the coach for a small group of guys who really needed it. When I first started working with Derek my range of motion on nearly all my lifts and movements were being performed incorrectly, but after a few short sessions he ingrained in all of us the proper way to perform each exercise. After we were comfortable with all the movements, he designed workouts that were both challenging and fun, a big change from some of the other coaches I had previously used that would just program long killer workouts because they were just hard. Since being coached by Derek, I have competed in a few competitions and placed in the top 25%, something I never would have been able to accomplish without his help. To this day, Derek continues to be the best coach I have ever had the pleasure of working with. In fact Derek still provides some distance coaching for me, and was very helpful in figuring out how to continue working out during my recent injury.
