I've been working with Yash and CFW for a few years, both in town and we've continued remotely after I moved. I really appreciate the workout routines, the emotional support, and the effort that's been put in to help me get to where I want to be both mentally, emotionally and physically. I appreciate Yash meeting me where I'm at and helping me work things out a little bit at a time. There has been so much improvement over the years because of CFW's and Yash's help. Thanks so much and I look forward to continue improving myself with you!

Prior to joining the CFW community, I was experiencing increasing shoulder pain & weakness. To the point where I’d wake up 3-4 times a night from discomfort. As an automotive technician, I rely heavily on being able to use my upper body. I enjoy my profession and in my mid 50's I recognized that I didn't want to retire out of necessity/inability.
I was keenly aware that 40 years of careless habits had caused my pain. I also realized that the medical environment was only offering me pain medications or invasive surgery to try to help. Those options were not even remotely attractive, so that's when I reached out to Coach Yash at CFW Health&Fitness.
I learned that he had the tools to help by way of neuro/muscular training. Partnering that with functional fitness & a sustainable health program seemed like my best.
I was blown away by the level of support & encouragement I received from our community! Friends that I just met were cheering me on in pursuing my OWN goals. That absolutely cemented my desire to remain here and "return the favor"!
Since discovering running long ago as a method of endorphin release, I have been a huge proponent of cheering others on. But remained relatively ‘harsh’ to myself. At CFW, I began leveling the scale by setting realistic goals. I absolutely love that there’s no ‘ego’ being projected from the other members regardless of ability!
Learning & practicing functional movements in a supportive/fun environment is an investment in your wellbeing, and it’s hard to find this degree of quality anywhere else! If you would like to increase your fitness & quality of life, what are you waiting for?!

I joined CFW a little over a year ago and if not the most, one of the most positive things I’ve done for myself and livelihood in years. I’ve worked out in the past, but I never really knew what I was doing, would watch YouTube for workouts, etc. with no real results that would last long term, or only focusing on one aspect of the body. After a year at CFW I’ve seen drastic improvements in how I feel, move, my energy levels, muscle gain and overall comfort and how much easier daily life is. Regularly attending classes 4-5 days a week has become the best routine I have ever done.
The coaches at CFW are absolutely amazing. They are intelligent and really work with you to help you achieve your absolute best. They are quick at tailoring workouts if a certain movement is uncomfortable or if you are nursing/have an injury. The community and other members are also truly fantastic. I have also done some of the ‘z-health’ work that CFW offers for pain-free movement, mobility and strengthening. I would strongly recommend this to anyone who is currently doing physio, has serious injuries, movement issues, etc. I personally saw better results in one or two hours of private sessions compared to months, or in some cases even years of physio.
Prior to joining, many told me about how CrossFit has a bad reputation for getting people hurt. I can attest to having hurt myself too on a few occasions. This was not CFW’s fault, it was me being stupid and pushing myself even when my own body was saying no, and coaches would say to take it a bit lighter and focus on form. Although I can’t speak for other CrossFit gyms, at CFW safety in any movement in my opinion is always taken as utmost priority, it comes down to you whether you listen to it or not.

I had a problem with discipline. I was not able to push myself to change my diet and exercise, despite knowing it was the right thing to do. I would get motivated, start working out regularly for a few weeks and then as motivation tapered off, I would fall back into old habits of watching too much TV, eating out constantly, and not sleeping enough. It was easy to make "no" the default when deciding to hit the gym.
Now, after a couple months of CFW’s help, I feel that I have genuine self-perpetuating motivation. I enjoy the workouts and the progress I have seen has created a positive feedback loop that has generated momentum for me to be disciplined in my diet, sleep, work, and social life.
I have certainly noticed that I have lost a significant amount of fat and even after just 1 month I am already getting compliments from people on the way I look. I have noticed progress in my exercise tolerance and strength. I have learned many new movements and am becoming accustomed to them.
Beyond all of this, perhaps the biggest change has come in terms of my ability to motivate myself to do things that I don't feel like doing. I have a long way to go, however, whether it's one more rep, one more patient (at work), one more chore, I feel the inner strength to get up and do what has to be done instead of giving up and procrastinating.
I have found that my productivity at work has improved and despite seeing more patients I feel less stressed at work. I have also found that my mental health has improved overall. I feel proud of myself and have gained an appreciation of what I am capable of achieving, which has transformed the way I see myself.
I now care about how I take care of my body, what I fuel it with, how much rest I allow it to have. I can only imagine how significant the impacts will be when these new habits are extended over a lifetime!

More
As a busy business owner, I was having difficulty with making my lifestyle intentions and ideas actually become reality. The knowledge and the desire to improve my strength, conditioning, flexibility, mobility, energy was all there but it was very slow and progressed unpredictably.
I would describe it as one of many things in my life that I was trying to "juggle" and fit in. I would get busy, then eventually have time to reflect on my situation, and then feel like I was running through a pool of mud waist high. Lots of brief effort. Lots of gaps with no progress or regression or being stuck.
Having Coach Chris to talk to about my thoughts, intentions, and movitations - and then turn this into an actionable and realistic plan was a game-changer. A different perspective is invaluable. It was the first time I reached out to someone else for help. I am the type of person who is very self-sufficient. In many ways to a fault. I never ask for directions if I'm lost. I rely on myself to figure it out. In this way, I now see it has held me back in the past.
Now, I feel so positive that I am keeping health & fitness at the forefront of my life, in thought and in execution. I feel my body starting to change in its capacity and awareness.
Also, I have made concrete changes to my schedule at work which had never happened before due to doubt or life "inertia". My motivation and attitude are energizing. I am experiencing a virtuous circle within and am progressing positively.
I am more excited to see how much fun I can have in this life. I feel like I am on a good trajectory now and am sure I can keep up the consistency to open new doors to a life that I never dreamed about.

I was in Waterloo for the first four months of this year because I study at UW. I was nervous about switching gyms at first, but everyone here was so kind and welcoming. People understand that being a beginner is tough so I never felt intimidated or hesitant to come to class. Class sizes are kept small which facilitates more coaching time, and the space is big so I was never concerned with not having enough room. I also really like this gym because of the main focus on holistic and functional fitness. I learned a lot about keeping good form which I think will help me during my co-op term.
Stella and Melanie are great coaches. I did my five one-on-one classes with Stella and I am so grateful for everything I learned. She also was the coach for many of my WOD classes, and she was always very polite, approachable and supportive. Melanie was also really helpful and funny too. I'm excited to return in September!

More
Prior to joining CrossFit Waterloo (CFW) I was overweight. Even worse, I was on daily pain meds for arthritis, a meniscus tear in my knee, and chronic back/joint soreness. Most of my friends who were also in their 70’s accepted these conditions as ‘normal’ for our age group. For the most part, our doctors addressed these issues by presenting a prescription for pain pills.
I attempted a daily exercise routine at home, tried yoga, and even a pilates class to see if that would help my pain. Although there was some benefit, it just wasn’t connecting with me as I felt like I did not fit in and it was a struggle to attend regularly.
Then I joined CFW and soon realized what was missing for me. A combination of well-planned workouts that focused on a goal, excellent coaches who monitored and corrected my movements, and to my surprise class members who were supportive and encouraging. This all combined to create a friendly community that I quickly enjoyed attending.
CFW has become an important part of my life and lifestyle. As a 77 year old retiree, I have attended their workouts for 5 years now, about 3-4 classes weekly. In that time, I came off pain medications permanently as I am pain free (for the most part). I also lost weight, strengthened my core and other muscles, and look forward to attending my workouts regularly.
More specifically I lost over 20 lbs and kept it off. My doctor provided options to manage my meniscus tear with a brace, physio, and surgery. Instead, the CFW coaches focused on workouts that strengthen/mobilize muscles around the knee/core. And after 2 years, my knee rarely bothered me so I no longer used the brace. In my 4th year, I entered the Foundations International CrossFit Open in 2023 for Age Group of 65+ and finished 2nd in Canada and 9th in the World!
I have more strength, coordination, balance, aerobics, and general physical and mental health. CFW’s program allowed me to gain confidence in my routines and maximum benefit for the time I invested in each session and now I feel truly a part of the community!

I originally came to CFW looking for help with some severe vertigo I was experiencing. I am self employed and was overworked, over stressed, and I had a poor home life / work life balance. This frustrating combination led to me getting vertigo as my body was basically forcing me to take some time off.
The program at CFW has helped tremendously. I am cutting my work days off by 5:30, focusing more on myself and my family, getting good sleep for the first time, and involving regular mobility and movement to my weekly routine.
I’m feeling more energy both physically & mentally. I’m still learning how to navigate and accept that the work will always be there if I don’t get it all done today as this mindset shift is still a work in progress, but prioritizing my health is clearly making life better. And the vertigo is GONE!

I never had a great relationship with my nutrition. I was snack and sugar reliant every day but knew I had to decrease and stabilize my weight to fix some hormonal issues. So I was always stressed about my health and frustrated that I was not doing anything about it.
The CFW team has helped me to forgive myself for these past challenges and instead openly learn through these past events. Having this outside source of accountability (rather than my usual family or self accountability) to rely on has changed everything for me.
I now have a better relationship with nutrition, and am prioritizing it. I’m also redirecting the negative spirals when things don’t go to plan and being much kinder to myself. I wake up easier and even feel lighter. I’m motivated to tackle the rest of the day as these new thought processes set a strong foundation.

Before working with a CFW Nutrition and Lifestyle coach I was exercising regularly, but my biggest issue was my diet. I was always snacking, eating out, having food late, and consuming alcohol regularly. I also realize now that my sleep patterns were also holding me back from getting the results I have always wanted.
I was frustrated because I didn't have a plan to get unstuck. I wasn't organized with my habits outside of the gym. I just ate more fast food, and was finding excuses all the time for lacking the structure.
After participating in the 63 Day Group Makeover (twice) my mindset is now completely different with food. I’m just way more prepared. I feel like a totally different person now since realistic habit changes are becoming my everyday routine.
I have now lost 30 pounds, have muscles in places I didn't know existed, sleep better (still a work in progress), and most importantly feel better from a mindset point of view. I’m officially in the best shape of my life at 47 and healthy living like I've never lived before.
The impact on my life is big. I’m overall happier in life and way happier with what I see in the mirror. Being in a better state of mind makes dealing with life's obstacles way easier. Everyone I know is commenting on how great I look... and it all happened in about 6 months! That’s a pretty quick TOTAL transformation.

More
Before CFW’s 63 Day Lifestyle Coaching, I had zero motivation to go to the gym or eat healthier. It was easier to stay home and eat junk food than workout and eat healthy. I fell back on my old habits of poor eating, irregular sleep schedules, and overall laziness.
This frustration felt like an insurmountable obstacle to overcome. I wanted to change, but I didn't want to put the effort into changing. I was looking for an "easy" way out for my lifestyle choices but it wasn't the healthiest.
My approach to this 63 day kick off was to set very very very (did I say very?) small goals with the intent of making these life long changes. The last time I did a “challenge” I went hardcore and changed too many things all at once and too quickly. While I did get the result I was looking for at the time, those changes were not long term and they did not last.
My goal has now been achieved so far and I am once again regularly going to the gym and enjoying it. Now I can focus on my next goal and start working on a plan to address that.
I now find myself less mentally drained after a long day of work and I'm no longer finding excuses not to go to the gym. The 5:45pm WOD (workout) is now the highlight of my day and I can't wait to get into the gym to see my friends and workout. I have also noticed I have a bit more discipline with respect to food and portion control. I find that when I eat regularly (3 meals a day) I am more full and thus can eat less with each meal. As a result, I have lost a few pounds which is great.
The changes I have made have impacted my life in a positive manner. I still have a long way to go to address everything on my "to do" list but this is a marathon and not a race. I will use what I have learned in this 63 day kick off to address the other areas of my life that need some adjusting.

More
Prior to starting with the CFW team and the 63 Day Nutrition and Lifestyle Makeover, I was facing significant challenges in managing my health and nutrition. Although I had a clear goal, to improve my physical well-being not just for myself, but also for my family, I was struggling to convert that into actionable steps.
My frustration was intense and draining, like being trapped in a cycle of starts and stops that sapped my motivation. The inconsistency was demoralizing and mentally taxing. The money I spent on underused equipment compounded the frustration, serving as a reminder of my failure to stay on track.
This journey is fundamentally different because of the supportive and engaging community at CFW. The coaches and members foster an encouraging environment that isn't overly competitive, making my fitness journey enjoyable rather than a chore. This positive atmosphere motivates me to consistently attend and pushes me to consider other facets of a healthy lifestyle, such as improved nutrition. Ultimately, the enjoyment I derive from being part of this community makes it easier to show up and strive for my goals.
I've noticed significant improvements in my daily energy levels since starting my journey. Tasks that I would have previously procrastinated due to lack of energy, I now tackle willingly. Additionally, even though the change in my weight isn't drastic yet, seeing a downward trend on the scale is an encouraging sign. These changes, although subtle, serve as a constant motivation
Joining CFW has brought about consistent and tangible improvements in my health month after month. It's not just me who sees the changes; my wife has acknowledged that this investment is paying off in noticeable ways. The positive impact extends beyond physical wellbeing, instilling confidence and a belief that I'm on a path to achieve my best shape ever. If I continue on this trajectory, I'm convinced that within the next year, I'll be in the best condition of my life, physically and mentally.

More
Before CFW’s 63 Day Makeover, I was struggling with changing my body composition. Despite my strong efforts, I’d hit a plateau in my weight loss journey and didn't know how to get past it. I tended to give up, and then try again for a week or two, and give up again. This was a frustrating cycle, and I just eventually lost hope.
This Nutrition and Lifestyle program kick started my weight loss again and I now have new tools that work. My better mind set is huge - celebrating the wins and recognizing the improvements. Keep remembering my “WHY” is the key to not giving up. Just looking for the 10% improvement every day, or even every week. Sustainable weight loss can be a very slow journey. A healthy approach to it isn't going to include massive leaps. Just be willing to switch it up. What was working in the past might not KEEP working. I learned not to give up, but rather just to tweak my plan if needed. Paying attention to how I feel and look for a new way to eat if the old way isn't working anymore.
After 63 days I have lost 8.5 pounds and am still losing just over 1 pound a week and have lots of energy as a bonus! I’m now confident, not only in my clothes, but with the knowledge I now have in how to do it. I am confident moving forward that I have the ability to look for the 10% and continue to be willing to change it up. I think we tend to get stuck in an eating pattern. This broke my eating patterns to heck!

More
Thanks again for putting together a plan to get me in better shape not only physically but mentally. The process was simple, but more difficult to implement that I initially thought going into it at least for the first few weeks the accountability was a major benefit.
Starting off at 237lbs at the end of January was the second time I hit that weight. I worked my butt off last spring and summer 2020 with running and (what I thought was) diet. I got down to 222 and plateaued there. Frustrated, I gave up in Late August and started drinking more beer and being more sedentary.
Initially my goal was to get to 215, a weight I haven’t seen on the scale that I can remember and I knew I needed some guidance. After seeing the results with Mike Matas, I knew Chris and CFW could help me get to a healthy lifestyle especially in a time that obesity and a sedentary lifestyle could actually kill you (COVID). The simple meal plan definitely looked easy on paper, but I didn’t realize how many carbs and sugar I was eating every day. Cutting out pizza and sandwiches along with beer were the most difficult part for the first 3 weeks. After the first 3 weeks and seeing I was dropping 3+ pounds a week it definitely got easier. 2.5 months in and 30 pounds down, I don’t crave sugar or carbs but I still crave the odd ice cold beer. I’m still using the steps that I’ve learned today and working at getting down to 205 before I can have a beer again (2lbs to go!). Although clothes are fitting way different, there’s still some work to be done and I’d like to see myself under the 200lbs mark. Once the system is in place (diet and exercise), it’s easy to follow and I’ll continue to follow the system that Chris put into place for the foreseeable future.
Thanks again Chris, I honestly couldn’t have had the success without you and CFW. The value is incredible and would do it 100 times over.

When I first started at CFW I came through the doors with several health issues. It didn't take too long for me to realize that I had found a place that not only benefited my physical health, but my mental health as well. With the encouragement, knowledge, and support from all the coaches, along with working with a CFW Nutrition and Lifestyle Coach, I was defeating all my ailments at a pace that I never thought possible. My nutrition and lifestyle coach was very helpful and created a plan for me that was very realistic for me to follow and succeed at. Within the course of three months, I had lost 35lbs, my blood pressure was down to a healthy level, I was sleeping full nights, and my strength / energy / and overall mental health had all improved dramatically. I cannot thank CFW staff and members enough for creating such a positive and inspirational environment.

Having an absolute blast at CFW. After two years of sitting inside as a result of COVID it's a been awesome to get back to doing some physical activity. CrossFit is new to me but I've been loving it. Everything being in a class-based format means I don't have to think about going to the gym as much outside of when I'm there. No need to plan workouts or follow some guide on my phone, just show up and the coaches will take you through things. Also worth noting that while CrossFit has a bit of a reputation for ✨toxic masculinity✨ - there's none of that to be found here. Coaches put the emphasis on the right things, form comes first, and it's not an aggressively competitive or otherwise "bro-ey" environment. Would recommend to absolutely anyone looking to add some more physical activity into their life, regardless of current fitness level or experience. The coaches will meet you where you're at and take you where you want to go. 😁

Can't say enough great things about CrossFit Waterloo. The workouts are always really well balanced, the staff are really knowledgeable and encouraging, and the gym equipment is top notch. But the best part of CFW is the community - everyone is welcoming and you can choose if you want to engage in any friendly competitiveness using the SugarWOD app. Coach Linda's classes are always super fun too.

Can't say enough great things about this affiliate. The programming is challenging, fun, and scaleable to be accessible for everyone, with a balance of repeated WODs (to test and re-test) and also new WODs (to keep things interesting and our bodies guessing). They have lots of different types of equipment and include it in variable ways into the programming. The equipment is in great condition and there is always enough to go around. The coaches are kind, approachable, knowledgeable, and mindful to emphasize proper form during the warm up, always providing tips on common mistakes and how to avoid them. They are also observing during the WOD to make sure that people are maintaining form under fatigue, providing helpful feedback to make adjustments. The people attending are also great. It really feels like a community, people greeting each other, cheering each other on, celebrating successes, offering support during challenges. A truly great group of people and great place to participate in crossfit.

Great coaches at this Crossfit location. Unlike some others these ones are careful to make sure that you are doing movements and workouts correctly to minimize injury risk. They always have a great positive and encouraging attitude which is echoed by the community that attends the classes. People go out of their way to make it feel less intimidating for newcomers.

I’ve been coming back to Waterloo for the last 4years from overseas and one of the best things is visiting Crossfit Waterloo. Not only are there facilities top notch, but the coaching staff is incrediblely dedicated to its members and community. The box runs a great amount of different classes but also big enough to accommodate open gym. I’ve been to enough Crossfit boxes across the world and must say this a premier box and a definite stop-by if in the KW area.

Very large and well appointed CrossFit facility. I've been a CrossFitter since 2010 and this is a solid box.
Knowledgeable and friendly coaching staff. I particularly value the Barbell Club which has measurably improved my Oly lifting.
Location:
This box is sort of co-located with a traditional fitness centre. You walk through the "regular" gym to get there. But it's really, REALLY big. Huge amounts of gear, 2 big Rogue rigs, dozens of wall balls, kettlebells, ropes, slam balls, GHDs, and all the toys you'd expect. Turf area. Pegboard. Assault bikes and rowers. Extra squat/oly areas with racks and wooden mini-platforms. It's BIG. Did I say that already? Some days I wish there were FEWER assault bikes so I'd have the excuse to row instead. LOL.
Coaching Staff:
While there's some variability around the strengths and preferences of the coaching staff, I've found all the coaches I've interacted with to be knowledgeable, friendly, and safety/form conscious. I'm not a fire breather but I am a veteran of this whole CrossFit thing and I tell you, I learn something new or get a valuable cue pretty much every week. I notice that there is always special attention paid to the rookies or those that have to modify or scale the workouts, and coaches are excellent about clearly explaining scaling options and progressions for those that need it.

Since joining Crossfit 2 years ago, I've seen great results in mobility and fitness. Most of all, the community is supportive and positive. Trainers focus on correct movement and helping you to meet and even exceed your goals. It's one of the only sports the whole family can enjoy! In fact, my husband and two sons are now Crossfitters. Here's to PRs x 4!
