I have twins girls, 8 years old. They couldn’t be more different. One is completely extroverted with tons of energy and the other is super shy and easily embarrassed by attention. This program has brought out the best in both my girls - allowing my one daughter to exude her energy & gain discipline and has brought major confidence to my other daughter. Master Chang’s patience & determination with them and all the other children is admirable and definitely setting high standards within my kids to be confident, respectful and disciplined. I am a 50-year-old male. I have always wanted to try martial arts as there were many movies in that genre when I was growing up but as the years progressed, nothing came of it until my wife and I started watching the now famous Cobra Kai TV show. I realize it was entertainment on TV but at the time, COVID had everyone locked down and we were tired of sitting in the house for months on end, so we searched for a class to join. We found U.S. Taekwondo Academy through a personal recommendation. We met with Master Chang for an initial consultation, and he described the program and asked us what we wanted to achieve. At the time, I weighed 385 pounds, so my primary goal was to lose weight. Master Chang was understanding of our needs and was excited for us to try the program; so, we decided to move forward. We started at the White belt, as everyone does, and it was hard! I had to take many breaks during exercises and could hardly lift my legs for kicks. I felt depressed but it was Master Chang that was supportive. I suppose he could see the emotions on my face and always said to me, “if you make sure you come to class and give me your all, I promise you, you will feel much better”. So fast forward months later and I cannot wait for the next class! I practice at home, trying to perfect things we were taught in class. I wish there were a 3-day a week option! I have dropped 45 pounds and have progressed a few belts, take fewer breaks, and can kick so high one of Master Chang’s assistants said he was impressed. Master Chang has instilled a new passion within me. While I still have aches and pains (and you will too if you put in the effort), I still go to class no matter what and put in a 110% every time. Classes are high paced, and action packed. I have decided that this is a long-term commitment for me and aspire to achieve more knowledge of the art. I owe those feelings to Master Chang’s commitment, dedication, support, encouragement, and providing a rewarding environment to those that will put in the effort. Master CJ Chang and Master Julia Chang are incredible instructors and their school follows the Olympic Taekwondo discipline (the best in my opinion). USTA teaches proper stretching, punching, blocking, and kicking techniques but also teaches the importance of respect, loyalty, integrity, confidence, honesty, and self-control. There are so many great things I could say about U.S. Taekwondo academy! We signed our two boys up for Little Ninjas at the ages of 4 and 5 years old; Master Jennifer and Grand Master Chang are AMAZING with them. They really know how to interact with their students, making them engaged during class yet having fun at the same time! Now, a little over a year later, my two boys are high yellow belts soon to be testing for their orange. Both locations have done a great job staying connected with their students during this whole pandemic, by offering virtual AND in-person classes! I’ve been training here for a while and signed my kids up as well based on how amazingly well they handle kids (mine are 4 and 7). I’m always impressed how they can manage a room of children bent on running wild and keep it orderly! As a martial arts nerd I also enjoy their attention to detail on technique, forms, and sparring. Their summer camps and after-school programs have been a great way for tour kids to get regular practice while also having fun and getting their homework done there is a great time-saver when they get home. We are parents of a student at U.S. Taekwondo Academy (USTA). Our daughter, Juliana has been attending USTA since she was 7 years old, when she was formally introduced to Taekwondo as part of a Girl Scout sponsored demonstration/participation visit at USTA in Bel Air, MD. Melissa and I were impressed with the class and the instruction on our first visit. Rob has been interested in Taekwondo since childhood and Melissa was impressed with the class and school, and in the focus and dedication of the instructors. Immediately following the demonstration, Melissa and I quickly agreed to enroll Juliana in Taekwondo with U.S. Taekwondo Academy. As parents, we both feel that building and maintaining strong, positive personal attributes at an early age promotes the continued and lifelong qualities of self-confidence, dedication, and leadership. We wanted to find an avenue for Juliana to build confidence and focus, not only for the challenges of Taekwondo, but to assist her in school and future endeavors. The school’s founder, Grand Master Se Yong Chang, his son, Master Yong CJ Chang and daughter, Master Youngshin Jennifer Chang Pasion have welcomed us into the USTA family and we are thrilled with Juliana’s Taekwondo progress at USTA. It has inspired the positive qualities we had hoped for, as Juliana continues to excel in Taekwondo, and also in her academics, and in her decision to take up the Viola. In December 2018, Juliana attained “Super Red” belt status and is two belt tests away from a Black Belt, which she will achieve in March, 2019. The instruction at USTA is precise, focused and disciplined, but with the comfort and realization that these are still children. Master CJ Chang and Master Jennifer are excellent instructors. Lessons are taught with the assistance of younger, black belt instructors who also provide the children with successful role models closer to their age….an important positive reinforcement. Juliana has competed in officially sponsored Taekwondo regional tournaments. She medaled in competitions for both Forms and Board-breaking, competing against her peers from Maryland and Virginia. Talk about a confidence builder!! Juliana was also accepted on Team Chang, a high-level squad that continues to improve her confidence, skills and mental focus. We have both told Master Jennifer and Master CJ that we appreciate their strong, positive influence on Juliana. Both Master Jennifer and Master CJ competed as members of Taekwondo teams representing the United States and their place as positive role-models for our daughter is on firm ground. Grand Master Chang, a 9th degree Black Belt, also stays involved in instruction. His experience and expertise combined with his son, daughter and staff provide a wonderful learning environment at USTA. We also strongly feel that our daughter is positively influenced by seeing a strong, disciplined and successful female role model in Master Jennifer. We have both told Master Jennifer how much Juliana looks up to her, and we see the difference in Juliana when she hears Master Jennifer tell the young girls that they can be “Beautiful, Smart AND Strong”. That positive message to young girls, for us, is a difference maker. I Can’t Thank USTA Chang for all they have done for my Grandson Carson Freeman. Carson has been in Taekwondo since he was 5 years old However when his First mentor and Master Left the Baltimore Area Carson decided to take a Break from Taekwondo. He was 12 at the time he is now 16. Carson asked me if he could go back to Taekwondo about 2 Years ago. At first, I was reluctant as there are so many Taekwondo Schools that really don’t care one way or the other about the Student except that they get paid. Carson has always been a Great Kid, Smart, Polite, Creative, Handsome, Respectful, and just an all-around Great Person…. Yes, I am Bias he is my Grandson after all, however all of this is True. I was concerned however as Carson didn’t really care for any Sports or Extracurricular Activities except maybe his XBOX. There is nothing wrong with that except no Growing Young Person should only have School and XBOX in their Life. So, I started looking for a Good Taekwondo School where Carson would be Happy, Learn but Learn the Right Way. I not only found a Good School but a GREAT SCHOOL in USTA Chang and a GREAT MASTER & MENTOR in Master CJ Chang. Carson has Grown so much and in Only the Best way being a Part of USTA CHANG. I am usually always at Carson’s Classes as I love to watch him Grow in his Sport. I have watched over the last 2 years as Master CJ Chang teaches his Students. Master CJ always takes the time to help each of his students and is always there to help & advise his students. That means so much to a Parent and/or Grandparent as our Young and Growing Children need the kind of Support Master CJ Chang gives them as they find their way into their teen years as well as into Respectful Productive Young Adults. Family first atmosphere! Not only is the instruction top notch with the emphasis on the appropriate techniques/styles, discipline, respect, loyalty and honor, they also create a family first atmosphere. My kids (8 & 6) are enrolled in their afterschool program which provides them a safe and structured environment day in and day out. My 8-year old daughter Libby has been taking Taekwondo at USTA for about two and a half years. She is now one belt away from earning her black belt! When she started, she attended Master Jennifer’s Churchville school, but when she started 2nd grade, she transitioned to the After-School Program at Master Chang’s Main Street school. This program is very well run and incorporates after-school pickup, homework time, snack time, and TKD class time. They also pick a “Star of the Month” and reward a child with a certificate and gift for demonstrating respect, good behavior, and helpfulness, among other things. In addition to the After-School Program, my daughter is part of Team Chang, which has special training on Fridays and Saturdays at the Main Street school. This training focuses on developing the skills that the athletes need to compete in both local and national tournaments. It pushes the students to new extremes, both physically and mentally. Master Chang, Master Jennifer, and their teaching staff have an amazing ability to motivate the team - they are on the floor working with the students and demonstrating techniques, not sitting on the side-lines. They want the students to be the best-of-the-best. They recognize the strengths and weaknesses of each of their students and have the uncanny ability to get through to the students while taking into account their individual idiosyncrasies. Our experience at USTA has been amazing and has promoted the evolution of TKD as a “fun thing to do” into a competitive sport for my daughter. Not only does TKD at USTA develop strength, flexibility, and grace, it teaches respect, discipline, honesty, and self defense, all of which are invaluable assets to possess. USTA family was a blessing in disguise! I enjoy the beliefs USTA demonstrates and applies to everyday life with our children! They are all great! I tried putting my son in other programs, but he would get bored or not want to practice. My son has been with the USTA family for a little over a year in the afternoon program. He has never complained or not want to go, in fact, doctor appointments need to be scheduled in the morning so he can get to school and get to USTA in the afternoon. My son has done a 360 in many things with school and home, being in this program! He is more confident and disciplined that he does better in everything he starts. I originally enrolled my son in the Churchville Academy with Master Jennifer Chang. She brought things out of my son at a young age: confidence, inspiration and determination. I have to say the USTA was there for our family during the hardest of times and continue to be there daily for my son, as role models and positive influences in his life. After 6 months of the program, I decided to take my son out of the Y before / after care and enroll him with the US Taekwondo after-school program at the Bel Air school. He has now been with the program almost 3 yrs. Whenever he is not with his USTA family he is talking about them (Master James) which only reinforces my beliefs in the program. Master Chang, Master Julia, and Master James are amazing. They work daily with all the other children to complete their homework and retain value in their education. The best part of this is that my son always wants to impress his instructors, and in doing so has begun reading (after a long battle with doing so). Originally enrolled my son in the Academy when he was having problems with mild bullying in school. The USTA had done a bully busting demonstration at his school. My son has no problems with anyone anymore and not because he has learned "how to fight". My son has learned confidence taught by the best instructors I have ever come accross. Everyone associated with the USTA becomes part of a "family", and from the top down, everyone strives for excellence in all aspects of their lives, not just Tae Kwon Do. I would recommend the USTA for much more than simply learning how to protect yourself. The students are taught a lifestyle based on respect and hard work. Awesomeness! My twins have been studying here for a little over 3 years and I encourage all people of all ages to check this place out! Master Chang and staff are truly inspiring, He teaches respect, confidence, discipline and to believe you can do anything you set your mind to and praises you for always trying your best! It's a great atmosphere, you feel as if you are family. I've watched my son develop into a very confident young man and that was our goal putting him into this program.
