I had four training failures as a student pilot getting started two decades ago, but he was instrumental in resetting my mindset on how to respond to their queries and concerns. His guidance and insight was just what I needed to reinforce the ability to make it a conversation instead of perceiving it as an interrogation, reminding me that they WANT to hire me and the opportunity is mine to lose. He taught me how to take ownership of the lessons learned to reassure the company that I have learned from my mistakes and have been quite successful ever since, if not because of those lessons learned in retraining. The retesting made me a better pilot and less likely to repeat these mistakes. His advice regarding phraseology, "speaking with a smile," and framing each question they ask in a category of "Why are they asking this question?" How has this made me a good airline pilot? Was the outcome success or lesson learned?" Answering through a succinct STAR method and aviation decision-making platform redefined everything I thought I knew about positive interviewing skills. Our preparation sessions were relaxed and at ease, and he encouraged me to simulate that feeling and atmosphere during the interview, which made the process incredibly less foreboding. By practicing various scenarios and questions, I felt confident I would have a thoughtful answer to each question they had, and I did! There were only one or two questions I didn't have a story for at the ready, but using his methods and tutelage, I candidly composed one and knocked it out of the park.
